BY TORI DeANGELIS The results of several breakthrough studies are offering new insights on gay men, lesbians and bisexuals. Among the key findings: * Several studies suggest that gay men, lesbians and bisexuals appear to have higher rates of some mental disorders compared with heterosexuals, although not to the level of a serious pathology. Discrimination may help fuel these higher rates. * A study found lesbians reported equally strong levels of mental health as their heterosexual sisters and higher self-esteem. * A new study of gay and lesbian youth finds that they are only slightly more likely than heterosexual youth to attempt suicide, refuting previous research that suggested much higher rates. Researchers say these studies demonstrate the need for better, more tailored psychological treatment for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people. Extractions: Conferences and News SFSU granted nearly $900,000 for landmark study of gay youth, their families Study funded by The California Endowment will explore sexual orientation in white, Latino families SAN FRANCISCO, June 19, 2002 Researchers at San Francisco State University have received a three-year, $876,965 grant to conduct the first-ever study of physical and mental health outcomes of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth who disclose their sexual orientation to family members during adolescence. Funded by The California Endowment, the states largest health foundation, the study is also the first to comprehensively explore sexual orientation in Latino families. Earlier studies of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth have shown higher rates of suicide, substance use, risky sexual behaviors, victimization, depression, chronic stress and pregnancy than their heterosexual peers. However, little attention has been focused on the youths families and their responses after the youths come out. Caitlin Ryan, director of policy studies at the SFSU Institute on Sexuality, Inequality and Health, and Rafael Díaz, SFSU professor of human sexuality studies and ethnic studies, will work closely with Northern California community agencies such as the Gay Straight Alliance Network and Adolescent Health Working Group to study white and Latino teen-agers and their families.

Transgendered People These web pages address the health concerns of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, also known as "GLBT" people and "sexual minorities." Most of the health concerns of GLBT people are no different from those of anyone else. For example, we can all benefit from eating five fruits and vegetables a day, exercising for at least 30 minutes four times a week, washing our hands regularly, and always wearing our seat belts. Some health concerns, however, are specific to the GLBT community. For example, many GLBT people are subjected to discrimination and outright violence, and this increases stress and can take a toll on mental health. Lesbians may be more at risk for certain cancers and less at risk for others based on specific behaviors and choices. Not only are gay and bisexual men at greater risk for HIV, there is also mounting evidence that they are more likely to smoke than heterosexual men, and this could increase gay and bisexual men's risk for lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. In addition, GLBT people generally receive less health care than the population as a whole and the quality of their care also suffers. Due in part to negative past experiences and mistrust of the medical profession, they tend to visit health care providers less often. GLBT people are often guarded about discussing their sexual behavior with health care providers, fearing that "coming out" will lead to discrimination. Finally, GLBT people often have less access to health insurance, as most workplace policies do not cover unmarried partners.

T he last several years have witnessed the swift coalescence of gay and lesbian studies as both an academic subject and a popular research focus in virtually every discipline of the humanities and social sciences and in biology. Along with the sharp increase in monographs and journal articles has come a virtual explosion of Internet sites relating in some fashion to the life, culture, and issues of the gay and lesbian communities, both within the United States and worldwide. Many of these sites presuppose a degree of familiarity with subcultural jargon and abbreviations by using in their names slang terms, such as "queer," which may not be the most obvious of choices to the general searcher. The pattern of site creation is very different from many other subject fields, centering upon individual organizations ranging from blatantly political activist groups to professional caucuses (the latter having begun with ALA's Gay and Lesbian Task Force in 1970). In an effort to cope with the sheer number of individual homepages carrying information relating to the gay and lesbian communities (and the speed with which new sites appear), this listing focuses on identifying those sites with the broadest potential audience and greatest value for reference work. General access points such as the Queer Resources Directory should be checked regularly for expanded and updated coverage of specific topics or information on newly founded groups.
