    Extractions: Garden History All over Europe gardening has been a passion for centuries from the mediaeval herb gardens kept by monks, apothecaries and the kitchen garden of the Manor House through the carefully cultivated borders designed by the lady of the House down to superb gardens to impress the monarch such as those at Hatfield House and Penshurst Place in England. The lord coming back from the crusades brought a rose to his lady to enrich her garden. This had progressed by the sixteenth century as the rich began developing their estates rather than endowing churches. They would invite their equals to see these developments and they, in turn, would try to outdo the owners of the gardens they had seen. By the seventeenth century writers such as John Evelyn were describing gardens they had visited. It is now that the three main styles Italian, French and English really get their names. Each country had gone its own way and produced a distinctive, if not unique style, and as European aristocracy and 'nouveau riche' became more mobile so they brought ideas from the other countries with them. These English seventeenth century gardens were like the French gardens mostly formal in design and it was the eighteenth century before the great change came about with the innovations by Charles Bridgemand, William Kent and 'Capability' Brown created an entirely new 'landscape' design which revolutionized the English garden.

    Extractions: Linda Gordon The question raised by this conference brought me to a surprising conclusion: that the feminist reconstitution of knowledge no longer seems to me so radical a break as it once did. In history, and probably in other fields, as well, our critiques of old scholarship, and our attempts to construct a new scholarship, seem to me rather to follow in paths already opened. That does not, I think, belittle or weaken the feminist contribution. On the contrary, the emphasis on the uniqueness and novelty of what we are doing may reflect the bravado of inadequate confidence. In attempting to reconstruct history, feminists do no more and no less than many groups battling for political power have done before. If history is the king of the political arts, its power to legitimate sovereignty is frequently under attack and must constantly be defended. From the classical world to Tudor England to the Reagan administration, ideologues write and rewrite histories of their imperialisms, successions, and legitimacy, with an eye to raising money for armies. Opponents counterattack, now scoring points as the rulers reveal their hypocrisy, now writhing in helplessness, unable to reach the masses with their counter arguments. The stakes may be higher today, but the ability of the dynasties to buy historians is greater, too. Naming the new women’s history “herstory” does us no favor. Implying that we are the first to fight this ideological battle deprives us of a history we already have. Indeed, I would venture to say that the rhetoric of the uniqueness of our intellectual project reflects a growing distance of scholars from the totalizing tendencies of a strong political feminist movement, and its desire to incorporate, even to subsume, other radical traditions. But most historiographical progress—perhaps most intellectual progress—proceeds by rearranging relationships within old stories, not by writing new stories. The old stories have been ours, too—women’s, not only men’s—although that is a contested point, and I will return to argue it shortly.

People at the Rand Corporation, America's foremost military think tank, were trying to figure out an important strategic problem: how could US authorities talk to each other in the aftermath of a nuclear attack? Communication networks of the day were chained point-to-point, with each place on the network dependent on the link before it. If one point in the network was blown up, the whole network would become useless. Paul Baran, one of the Rand thinkers on the project, conceived the idea for a new kind of communications network; one that wasn't organized point-to-point, but instead was set up more like a fishnet. He believed this structure could allow information to find its own path through the network even if a section had been destroyed. His eleven volume report for the Pentagon was eventually shelved; but younger engineers realized that he had hit on an essential idea . . . Baran's Cold War musings later influenced the design used to create a small, decentralized network connecting computers at four university campuses around the United States. This tiny seed eventually grew into the Internet; a huge network-of-networks, millions of nodes strong, which today covers the entire globe.

    Extractions: Glass History Glass is one of the most ancient of all materials known and used by mankind. The geologic glass, obsidian was first used by man thousands of years ago to form knives, arrow tips, jewelry etc. Manmade glass objects appear to be first reported in the Mesopotamian region as early as 4,500 BC. glass objects dating as old as 3,000 B.C. have also been found in Egypt. Surprisingly these glasses have compositions very similar to those of modern soda lime silicate glass. No doubt the readily available soda ash, from fires, limestone, from seashells and silica sand, from the beaches are the cause of this agreement. Earlier glass coated objects have been dated to as early as 12,000 B.C. and are in the form of glazes and enamels on ceramic pottery, used presumably to improve the water tightness of various jugs, bottles and vases.     Extractions: Ashmolean Museum John Tradescant the Elder (c.1570 - 1638) The John Tradescants Both the Tradescants became famous in their own time. They were gardeners to royalty, collectors of curiosities, travellers and importers of exotic plants. The John Tradescants are buried in the church yard of St-Mary-at-Lambeth which is now the Museum of Garden History, along with the grandson of the same name, who died aged nineteen. The knot garden at the museum is in the style of the Tradescants' time. To be 'curious' was a compliment in Elizabethan/Jacobean times and both Tradescants became famous for gardening, design, travel and their collection of curiosities. The epitaph on their tombstone describes very well why they became well known, and the interest there is today in their activities. This can be read today on their tomb at the museum. The Elder John Tradescant first travelled after 1609 when he entered the service of Robert Cecil who became the first Earl of Salisbury. He visited Europe to bring back plants and trees including roses, fritillaries and mulberrys to the gardens at Hatfield. Later, in the service of Sir Edward Wotton, Tradescant accompanied a diplomatic mission to Russia, and he also visited Algiers, always taking botanical notes and gathering plants. By the 1620's Tradescant had achieved a prominent position as a director of gardens whose advice was sought by the highest in the land.
