Extractions: ETHNOLOGY Ethnology is the branch of anthropology that deals with the comparative cultures of various peoples, including their distribution, characteristics, folkways, etc. At the Miller Museum, Jewish ethnology is interpreted several different ways. Ritual and ceremonial objects representing Jews in different parts of the world are part of the permanent collection. While Jewish religious beliefs are universal, no matter where Jews have lived, the form of objects used to ornament the Torah scrolls, and of objects associated with life cycle and calendar celebrations adopt the artistic styles of the host society. Jews are broadly divided into three subcultures: Ashkenazim, Sephardim and Mizrachim. These three groups are further divided into smaller geographical groups based upon their own self-designation. Generally, the Ashkenazim are the Jews of Eastern and Central Europe, although in the most narrow sense, it refers to Germany and German Jews. In the 15th and 16th centuries Jews from the Germanic centers of Mainz and Worms emigrated to Eastern Europe. The cultural centers of Ashkenazic Jewry shifted to Bohemia, Moravia, Poland and Lithuania. One of the most distinguishing features of these Jews at that time was their use of a Judeo-Germanic language (Yiddish). One of the greatest losses in the Holocaust was the wholesale destruction of Yiddishkeit, the distinct cultural expression of the Eastern European Jewry.

It has actively contributed to the conservation and development of the national culture, as well as the cultural traditions and identities of the Vietnamese nationalities. The museum is located on Nguyen Van Thuyen Street (named after a famous national ethnologist), in Cau Giay District, about 7-8 km from downtown Hanoi. It covers an area of nearly 3.3 hectares. Ha Duc Linh, an architect of the Tay ethnic group, designed the museum in the form of the ancient drum of the Dong Son Culture, and interior decorations were designed by French architect, Veronique Dollfus. Being part of the National Centre for Social Sciences and Humanities, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is involved in various undertakings. It carries out scientific research on Vietnamese nationalities, collects, classifies, assesses, preserves, restores, exhibits, introduces and exploits the cultural and historical values of all the nationalities. It also provides ethnological references and trains staff in the specific fields of the ethnographic museum. The Museum also attaches attention to the cultures of other countries in Southeast Asia, seeing them as potential targets for exhibitions at the museum in the near future.

Extractions: The Department of History and Ethnology offers study programmes in Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology and Folkloristics . Finnish and comparative ethnology focuses on the meeting of cultures, and on studying change from both local and historical perspectives. Foreign cultures are the main area of interest in cultural anthropology, but the characteristic features of our own culture are also examined. Studies in folkloristics concentrate on both oral and written traditions, customs, habits, beliefs, narration, and the present traditions. Areas of research at the Department are varied: material culture, popular culture, everyday and private life, cultural communication, memory, ethnicity, identity, mentality, childhood, tradition/modernity, historical anthropology, human creativity, minorities, and cultural change. Geographically, the main areas of interest are: Africa, USA, Japan, Scandinavia, and various European cultures. The degree programmes consist of three study modules: basic studies, subject studies and advanced studies. Basic studies examine the basic concepts, principles of research, history and methods of ethnology. Subject studies concentrate on practising scientific research methods; on fieldwork courses the students practice interview techniques, observation, and photography. Additionally, the studies include visits to museums and archives. The Bachelor's thesis is also a part of subject studies. Advanced studies explore the theories, methods and problems of the student's own area of specialisation. Each student compiles his/her Master's thesis on the basis of independent fieldwork.

The ethnological department was formed in 1925, acting under the name of Museum of Southern Serbia until 1945. In the most general terms it attempts to explain similarities and differences among cultures, but that alone is insufficient for understanding specific societies, the role of history in their development, and the many forces that act upon each. The competing theories that address these and other issues impel us to carry out deeper investigations than in the past.
