Most collections focus on the 20th century: the Arthur B. Spingarn Collection of Literary Works by American Blacks; the George P. Johnson Negro Film Collection; the papers of Ralph Bunche and Augustus F. Hawkins ; the Mayor Tom Bradley Administrative Papers (1963-1993) ; and collections on the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The Japanese American Research Project (JARP) is the foremost collection in the United States for the study of Japanese Americans. The collection includes more than 100 groups of personal papers of individuals and families; several thousand responses to surveys conducted in the 1960s of the Issei, Nisei, and Sansei generations; more than 400 tape recorded oral histories; art done by internees during World War II; year- books, directories, newspapers, and other rare publications of Japanese American communities and organizations; records relating to Japanese consulates on the west coast; and the administrative records of the project. Supporting the project records about the internment camps are the archives of the U.S. War Relocation Center at Manzanar, California, the papers of its director Ralph Palmer Merritt and W.R.A. historian Ruth Eleanor McKee

Extractions: In 1986, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone remarked that the average American intellectual standard is lower than the average Japanese standard because of the blacks and Hispanics in the U.S. He has often said that the source of Japan's strength lies in its "racial homogeneity." Eleven years later, University of Texas Law School Professor Lino Graglia triggered a firestorm of criticism for his remarks that "Blacks and Mexican-Americans are not academically competitive with whites in selective institutions. It is the result primarily of cultural effects. They have a culture that seems not to encourage achievement. Failure is not looked upon with disgrace." It has been said that race is the plague of civilization. Even in such supposedly race-blind societies as Israel, the specter of racism raises its head. In the Caribbean islands, social stratification corresponds with shade of skin. In 1977, Andrew Young, at that time the chief U.S. representative to the United Nations, claimed that a race war in South Africa would inevitably precipitate racial conflict in the United States. Some countries, like Great Britain and Australia, eliminate the potential for conflict by simply denying or severely limiting entry. However, American society has always been enriched by its waves of immigrants. John Kennedy observed how Alexis de Tocqueville saw the United States as "a society of immigrants, each of whom had begun life anew, on an equal footing. This was the secret of America: a nation of people with the fresh memory of old traditions who dared to explore new frontiers ..."

Regions An Historical and Ethnic Introduction by Stephen Sparkes Shan Migration History Ethnic Mosaic Changing Shan Ethnic Identity The Shan language is related to Thai and Lao but is not mutually intelligible. Thai is taught in schools and the majority of teachers come from outside the province, especially from Chiang Mai. TV and radio is only in Thai, and only a handful of elderly men and monks are able to read Shan as it was formally written in a Burmese script. Yet Shan is the language spoken in villages and homes even if one parent comes from another ethnic group. Practically all villagers in Pa Pu are fluent in Shan and Thai while some speak northern Thai and a little Karen as well. Southeast Asia has always had a population of multilingual people. The general rule is the smaller the group in a particular area, the more languages it needs. Thus in Mae Hong Son the Thai rarely learn another language, the Shan know their own and Thai, and the Karen learn Thai and Shan as well as their own. Although the Shan are Therawada Buddhists like the Thai, their rituals and holy texts have been greatly influenced by Burmese Buddhism. Many rituals are unique to Mae Hong Son and have become popular tourist attractions such as the three-day long ordination feastival, poi sang long held in April and processions of elaborate pagoda like structures called jong pala in October. Two northern Thai rituals are now also practiced in villages, the rocket festival held before the onset of the rains and the basii, calling the "life essence" of individuals about to undergo a rite de passage ritual. The culture and language of Mae Hong Son is changing into a "hybrid" culture, one which is predominately Shan but influenced from other regions in Thailand and different from the Shan cultures of Burma and China. One cannot speak of a single Shan culture but rather a cultural core, a set of common values, religious beliefs and language, and variation within specific societies.

Students are encouraged to explore all areas of percussion study and performance including snare drum, mallet keyboard, timpani, drum set, orchestral, and ethnic percussion. Students are involved in a comprehensive program of technical and musical development which includes rudiments, reading, notation, drum tuning, jazz and orchestral styles and repertoire, and solo/ensemble performance. SPU percussion students are exposed to a wide variety of activities outside the campus. Recent opportunities included performances at Benaroya Hall (home of the Seattle Symphony); recording sessions with Greg Adams (formerly of Tower of Power); and annual performances at the Northwest Percussion Festival.
