Located at CHDD, the center provides information and referrals, manages a resource library, develops curriculum materials, publishes information on assistive technology, conducts policy and funding analysis, and provides technical and other support for regional centers for assistive technology. An assistive technology device is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a person with a disability. Many high-tech and low-tech devices are now available to assist people with disabilities with daily living tasks, communication, education, work and recreation. Based at UC Berkeley, a consortium of universities, research institutes and disability agencies across the San Francisco Bay Area will recruit people with advanced professional degrees who want to broaden their theoretical outlook and their disability research methodological skills. The center is comprised of 13 federally funded projects with a 2000-2001 budget of approximately $2 million. Faculty members, graduate students, and project staff in special education, school psychology, and rehabilitation counseling are currently affiliated with the center. The emphasis of these courses is on helping people with disabilities to participate as far as possible in the community. Individual units provide an introduction to the study of disability and enable students to acquire skills in case management and coordination of services, and in the evaluation of human services. Students also acquire the skills and knowledge needed to support people in specific areas of need, such as communication, service planning or behavioural assessment, as well as community access and participation. Units will be offered in flexible manner. Unit outlines (on the website and distributed in the first class of the semester) will specify student contact and course access details. These will vary in terms of hours of contact between students and the lecturer (e.g. regular classes; 6-hour Saturday workshop) and among students (e.g. study groups, online discussion); place of contact (e.g. in class; online; community activities; off campus); content learning sequence (e.g. flexible approach to completing learning materials).
