The Museum does not maintain exhibit space and its collections are usually not available for public viewing. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology provides students with a wide variety of courses designed to further understanding and perception of social problems, social processes and differing cultures within and outside the U.S. S ociology attempts to understand human behavior through an examination of individuals within group settings, placing particular emphasis upon the social forces which influence behavior. A central goal of sociology is to have students gain insight into how their own lives are influenced by the social relationships around them. Virtually all human behavior is social behavior; thus, coursesin sociology examine in detail social groups of a variety of sizes and compositions. The anthropology major offers courses which help students understand humanity in all its various aspects.

Extractions: Discover Magazine Coming Onto the Land Carl Zimmer The evolution of fish into walking land animals was one of the greatest chapters in the history of life. Now a remarkable fossil creature shows that all the real excitement happened underwater. When you consider the years paleontologists often spend in daily and intimate contact with their fossils, it's not very surprising that they come to regard their long-gone animals as pets. Some work on the show dogs of the fossil world; they brag about how fast their velociraptor ran or how efficiently their saber-toothed tiger could sever a spinal cord. But when you listen to Jenny Clack talk about her pet, a fossil creature named Acanthostega that she has been working on for seven years, she sounds like the owner of a sweet, homely mongrel. "It wasn't very smart," she says. "It probably spent a lot of its time sitting at the bottom of lagoons, hidden in the muck, waiting for something to come by it could eat." Clack has helped make a reconstruction of it; its salamander-like body has big glassy eyes sitting on top of a flat, Muppet-style head, its mouth permanently caught in a foolish smile. Acanthostega mixes the anatomy of a newt with the charm of a mutt. But though it may not have their flair, in terms of evolutionary significance Acanthostega can easily go nose to nose with any of its fossilized companions. Velociraptors and sabertooths are both tetrapodsthat is, they have four limbs, along with fingers and toes, hips and shoulders. We humans are also tetrapods, as are iguanas, ravens, bullfrogs, porcupines, and every vertebrate that has ever walked on dry land. Even whales and snakes are tetrapods, although they shed their legs long ago. Acanthostega was a tetrapod, too, but at 360 million years old, it has a special distinction: aside from creatures suggested by a few older fossil fragments, it is the most primitive tetrapod known. That means that Jenny Clack's sweet, unprepossessing pet holds answers to the great mystery of how our ancestors changed from fish and hauled their bodies out of the water.

Extractions: Queer Archaeology and Anthropology!! I have always loved archaeology and helped my parents on a dig in Texas when I was a child. After coming out, I lived for several years in Moab, Utah and explored Anasazi and Fremont ruins all over the Colorado Plateau ecosystem. I found several ancient petroglyphs that apparently depicted homosexual activities, which sparked my interest in the possibility of Queer Archaeology. [Mayan codex showing two naked men with erections, embracing, quite similar to the petroglyph above] After many years of reading about European civilization prior to its conquest by Christianity, I started seeing patterns and themes that felt...well...queer to me. I became VERY intrigued by the possibility of finding physical remains of queer people and cultures from the prehistoric past after reading Timothy Taylor's brilliant yet quite readable book, The Prehistory of Sex: Four Million Years of Human Sexual Culture . Inspired by his theories and commentary on various prehistoric sites (especially that of the Cro-Magnon village of Dolni Vestonice) I began to research Queer archaeology in earnest. After a couple of years, I had enough information to begin writing a series of newspaper articles; my monthly column was called "Queering the Ancient Western World", and most of my articles are reprinted here.
