5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, informative, and highly recommended
William O'Brien believed in the British Parliament's capacity to give good government in 19th Century Ireland. His attempts to secure liberal reform were largely unsuccessfully, and he entered the 1840s with a growing conviction that the Irish Members were wasting their time at Westminister. In 1843, his political campaign for "justice" in Ireland prefigured the tactics of Parnell, but the effort ended in disappointment and O'Brien joining the Repeal Association in October of 1843. For the next five years he was a major political figure, and finally, a leader in the 1848 Irish rebellion. In William Smith O'brien And The Young Ireland Rebellion Of 1848, Robert Sloan provides the reader with a remarkable and informative political biography, as well as a "window in time" to the events that led up to Ireland's doomed rebellion against an unresponsive and exploitative British rule. Scholarly, informative, and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not really a review
OK, slight admission - I've never read the book.Frankly, failed Irish rebellions (of which there seem many) are not really my interest. However, the author is my history teacher at school, and a really good bloke. He deserves to do well out of this book, so even if you don't like the subject, buy it and give him a nice supplement to his teacher's salary! ... Product Description
All physicians need to learn to diagnose and manage head pain. However, there are many causes of headache: some are secondary to other conditions; others are disorders in themselves. These factors often make differential diagnosis and treatment a challenge. This didactic atlas approaches the problem of migraine and other headaches from a visual perspective. The contents cover the history of migraine and headache, their epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. While the central emphasis is on migraine, all types of headache are addressed. The book includes some classic illustrations from historical texts as well as modern images that illustrate the disorders and current thinking. ... Read more

Product Description

In the World War II era, big bands and swing music reached the heights of popularity with soldiers as well as friends and loved ones back home. Many entertainers such as Glenn Miller also served in the military, or supported the war effort with bond drives and entertaining the troops at home and abroad. In addition to big band and swing music, musicals, jazz, blues, gospel and country music were also popular. Chapters on each, along with an analysis of the evolution of record companies, records, radios, and television are included here, for students, historians, and fans of the era.

Includes a timeline of the music of the era, an appendix of the Broadway and Hollywood Musicals, 1939-1945, and an appendix of Songs, Composers, and lyricists, 1939-1945. An extensive discography and bibliography, along with approximately 35 black and white photos, complete the volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book

You will be captivated by these many stories of intrigue and mystery, anddumbfounded by the sophistication of the characters. All of the five stories compell you with their multiple plots.Kotzwinkle's writing will have you reading all day long and talking about this book for weeks.A turn of the century bug's life, but the writing is ten times more sophisticated.
This summary is about the last story of this book.Mantis and Hopper are trying to find the emperor's crown and at the same time Mantis has a bet with Walking Stick to see if Mantis can solve the three greatest mysteries of Bugland.Suspicion is starting to brew in the emperor's elite hornet bodyguard force.
I would recommend this book to anybody who likes allegories. This book makes the characters feel like real humans.

5-0 out of 5 stars It [is not good] that it isn't in print
Probably one of the greatest books i've ever read. the way Will makes a whole world of bugs come to life and the way Joe draws the bugs looks like they're real.

The collection of stories is about a Sherlock Holmes type Praying Mantis and his side-kick Dr. Hopper(a lot like watson.) Mantis likes to go on adventures and Hopper likes to cook and eat. When the detectives aren't at home they're somewhere int he bug world.

You should buy it ...

I gave "Trouble In Bugland"such a high rating because I found that this book kept me on the edge of myseat the whole way through. I also found it very interesting how InspectorMantis solved his mysteries so accurately and he didn't stop trying tosolve them until he found a solution to them. Product Description
Bank closings, soup kitchens, bread lines, unemployed workers begging for work--these images defined the 1930s and '40s in America. For African Americans the era was a study in contrasts: black workers had the highest unemployment rate at a time when black leaders held important positions in Franklin Roosevelt's administration; New Deal legislation threw hundreds of thousands of black sharecroppers off the land while the same federal government provided unprecedented opportunities for black writers and artists; dramatic episodes of racist violence against African Americans occurred just as Communists and other radicals launched a nationwide campaign against racial injustice.

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, the horrors of war provided an opportunity for blacks to demand equal treatment. As the African American servicemen, such as the all-black 99th fighter squadron (also known as the "Tuskegee Airmen"), fought for democracy overseas, black people at home were treated like second-class citizens. The war also created employment opportunities for many black working people. But few managed to get industrial jobs or into training programs, and those who did were likely to experience violent reprisals from disgruntled white workers. While U.S. troops invaded Normandy and bombed Okinawa, African Americans fought their own war at home.

From a Raw Deal to a New Deal examines the impact of the depression and the war on black communities. The response of workers, farmers, activists, and the federal government, the inspiring cultural and intellectual achievements of such leading African Americans as Marcus Garvey, W. E. B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, and Marian Anderson, and the role that war-time industrialization and recovery played in black protest movements paved the way for the modern civil rights movement. This is fascinating and relevant history for today's young people. ... Read more
