4-0 out of 5 stars rich metadata inclusion
MXF is an ambitious idea that has been long overdue in the film and audio industries. It harks to the common problem of how to compress and store films, and do so digitally. There are tremendous advantages in doing so, including the ability to analyse and manipulate such films with ever more powerful software. The enduring problem has been various different compression and storage standards.

The authors describe how an industry wide effort has produced MXF. It certainly took long enough; 5 years! But perhaps the deal was worth the wait. Thumbing through the book, you can see that provision has been made for very flexible inclusion of metadata. A rich format that permits sophisticated file searching based on that metadata.

Plus, there is aid for transitioning between current encodings and MXF. The aim is clearly for MXF to be a global standard. ... Read more

Product Description
This interview with James Hardy Wilkinson will take listeners back to a period, now 50 years ago, when computers were quirky, cantankerous, hand-built contraptions; duplicate copies of documents were made with carbon paper; trains were pulled by steam locomotives; and (black and white) television was just being introduced. Recorded in July 1984, just two years before Wilkinson’s death, this interview preserves some of the spirit, as well as the facts, of mathematical history. Wilkinson discusses his work, including the building of Turing’s Pilot Automatic Computing Engine (ACE), his involvement in the field of computation, and his personal view of early computational developments in numerical analysis.

Educated at Cambridge in mathematics, Wilkinson was drawn into computation as a result of work on ballistics calculations during World War II.He joined the Mathematics Division at the National Physical Laboratory in England shortly after the war and stayed there for the rest of his career, although he was a frequent visitor to other institutions, particularly Argonne National Laboratory and Stanford University.

Although an extensively edited version of the technical content of the interview appeared in the February 1985 issue of Byte magazine, the written form could not convey the slips and nuances in Wilkinson’s voice as well as some of the anecdotes and intonations that brought spirit to his words. Now, thanks to modern audio technology, the original tapes, which had begun to deteriorate, have been reproduced and preserved in their entirety on compact disk. ... Read more

Excerpt: Theodore Stark "Ping" Wilkinson (December 22, 1888 February 21, 1946) was a Vice-Admiral of the United States Navy during World War II. He also received the Medal of Honor for his actions in Veracruz, Mexico. Wilkinson as a midshipman at the United States Naval AcademyWilkinson entered the United States Naval Academy in 1905 and graduated first in the class of 1909. He served the two years of sea duty then required by law prior to commissioning, in the battleships Kansas (BB-21) and USS South Carolina (BB-26), before he received his ensign's commission on June 5, 1911. After instruction at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance (BuOrd), Wilkinson reported to the battleship Florida (BB-30) on July 25, 1913 for sea duty. During his time in that dreadnought, Ens. Wilkinson led Florida's 2d Company in action during the landings on 21 and April 22, 1914 at Veracruz, Mexico. For his skillful and courageous leadership of that unit of the battleship's landing force and his exhibition of "eminent and conspicuous" conduct, he received the Medal of Honor. On August 4, he was transferred to the armored cruiser USS Tennessee (ACR-10), and two days later sailed eastward in her across the Atlantic. Tennessee and North Carolina (ACR-12) were ordered to European waters to evacuate Americans trapped on the continent by the outbreak of World War I. On September 3, he became an assistant to the naval attaché at Paris and a month later left that post to join North Carolina in the Mediterranean. Subsequently, the young officer had tours of sea duty: first as aide, to Commander, 2d Division, ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2337793 ... Read more

Product Description
How do you crack nuts with a piece of string? Reverse gravity? Cobble together a clock out of a coffee cup, a soda bottle, and some water? Use a vacuum cleaner and nineteenth-century railroad technology to fashion a makeshift bazooka that can launch paper projectiles? Create a rainbow in a block of Jello? This is a one-volume romp through a whole array of counterintuitive science experiments that require little more than common household items and a sense of curiosity. Prepare to have your surprise sensors on overload as Neil Downie stretches math, physics, and chemistry to do what they have never done before.

This book describes twenty-nine unusual but practical experiments, detailing how they are done and the math and physics behind them. It will delight both casual and inveterate tinkerers. Of varying levels of complexity, the experiments are grouped in sections covering a wide field of physics and the borders of chemistry, ranging from dynamic mechanics (''Kinetic Curiosities'') to electricity (''Antediluvian Electronics'') and combustion (''Infernal Inventions''). The chapters are titillatingly titled, from ''Twisted Sinews'' and ''Mole Radio'' to ''A Symphony of Siphons'' and ''Tornado Transistor.'' More-detailed explanations, along with simple mathematical models using high-school level math, are given in boxes accompanying each experiment.

Armchair scientists will welcome this edifying and entertaining alternative to idleness, not least for the buoyant prose, enriched by historical and literary anecdotes introducing each topic. With this book in hand, tinkerers, whether dabblers in science or devotees, students or teachers, need never again wonder how to impress friends, the judges at the science fair, and, not least, themselves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Science Challenges for all ages
Neil Downie has developed another outstanding summary of science projects/challenges for all ages. At this time, when bcominig a scientist may not be the #1 career--- these projects get the attention of the student, parent and teacher alike. The opportunity to try, fail and try again--usually ends in success. We need this type of approach to encourgae our children to consider science as a career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vacuum Bazookas, Electric Rainbow Jelly, and 27 Other Saturday Science Projects.
The technical language was easily understood and presented in a clear interesting manner.
Mr Downie has inspired me to have a real go at these projects.
As we say in New Zealand "Sweet As".

4-0 out of 5 stars The bazooka is a good experiment
I enjoyed the book, but so far the only experiment we've done is the vacuum bazooka, for which I recommend using a wet vac and small water balloons as ammo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
I've only had this book for a few days, but have found the projects unusual and offbeat. For the most part, they are not a rehash of old science projects. They are well described and each one has a good description of the science and math behind them. The illustrations are not overly detailed, but they do the job quite well. I found it a little odd that the description of what the project is about is separated from the chapter on the project. The summaries of what is interesting about the projects and simply what they do is in the front of the book. If you open to a project within the book, you'll wonder what the real appeal of the project is until you go to the front of the book.

The author is quite a tinkerer and at least one of the project toys is patented. I believe a few others are heading toward patents.

Several projects require access to a small amount of Mecanno (or Erector) set parts. These companies almost do not exist it the U.S. any longer. However, Brio recently started distributing Erector sets again. I'm sure one could find substitutes for the Mecanno parts at a local hardware store or maybe even make them. ... Read more
