2-0 out of 5 stars accommodation in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia
On compairing 2 previous publications on the same book titles by Lonely Planet, I found that the book keep repeating itself, especially for accommodation in Sandakan. The difference of around 10 years had changed a lot in Sandakan, where new types of accommodations are available, especially around the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sepilok. It was quite frustrating not to find A SINGLE, repeat, NOT A SINGLE, indication in the 3 related books concerning accommodation options around that area, where at least 3 outlets have been in existence for more than 5 years already!!!???? For your information, I am not a Traveller to that part of the world, but a proud and responsible citizen of Malaysia staying in Sandakan and I was quite ashamed to be asked by quite a few of Oversea Travellers visiting Sandakan, about whether they can stay around the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (about 16 miles from the town centre) so that they can spend more time to visit the Orangutan. Only when they showed me the books that they are travelling with, which they told me,are very good, that I found out that none of the accommodation outlets for backpacker were stated in the books. To make matters worst, I have been asked by a few tourists where is Sandakan B & B just a few days ago. I asked him where he come to know about Sandakan B&B and the answers were the Lonely Planet Books that they are carrying. I cordially informed them that the books that they are carrying were only about 8 to 9 years out of date! It makes me wonder whether Lonely Planet just print and reprint their books just for the sack of business and not the intention of correctly informing the POOR TRAVELLERS (at their mercy, of course!)what they are supposed to get, if not 100 %, but at least the closest they can get,at the destinations concerned. What excuses does Lonely Planet has for not updating their books? Even if you are talking about 8 to 9 years lapse? I really felt sorry for those tourist who have to waste so much time finding out and not to mention the financial loses due to transportation up and down the Centre. When I accidently met up with a few of the tourists who I directed (I gave them a lift in my car) them to Sepilok B & B ( a very good backpackers' outlet near the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre ), they thank me for my help and commented that only IF Lonely Planet had informed them about such outlet, they wouldn't have to waste so much time and money to find out the hard way, where the stay there was cheap, clean and the people are friendly. Also for your information, your website address have been given to me by one of the tourists who happens to know about you. I strongly felt that it is the responsibility of a book publisher to better inform the readers correctly and only by proper updating that readers would appreciate their efficiency and professional altitudes! Thank you ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point, Reference Material
This is a good guidebook and fairly accurate. In a country like Indonesia, however, things change quickly so use this book as a reference not as a bible.Do you own research and talk to other travellers.Since LP Indo is the default travellers' guide to this region, most of the restaurants and hotels are not the best values. Many get a steady stream of customers just because of a good review and never bother to maintain the facilities. The best deals require a lot of footwork and bargaining! Also, bus/boat schedules always change. So don't plan a rigid itinerary based on the data in this book.I know a couple that lost a week because they planned a trip around a ferry described in this book but didn't actually exist!Be prepared to wait if you're going off the beaten path. Some boat services are infrequent between the islands.

Learning some bahasa indonesia always helps bargaining. The language section is adequate but the phrasebook is much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Indonesia
This book is great for giving you ideas as to which places to visit. But seeing now that it's 3 years out of date it has a lot of errors.I just used it in august of 2003 and all the prices are way off.Expect to pay about 2-3 times (sometimes 5-6 times) what the guide says because Indonesia's economy has picked up since the book has been released. For example: Borobudur is listed as 10,000Rp (~$1.80CDN)for entrance in the guidebook, now it's 58,000Rp (~$10CDN).They should be putting out a new one soon so if you can, wait for the next one to come out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way cool book
This is the most detailed book for a big place like indonesia.Indonesia (outside of Jakarta/Bali) is a perfect match of lonely planet's specialty in off the beaten track and/or budget traveling.Every part of Indonesia is covered, except for the small islands between Sumatra and Kalimantan that might be cool to check out.Its not the Riau - that's covered in detail. It has minimal coverage of the Natuna islands. I'm interested in the islands further south - Tambeian Islands, Dadas Isalands, and Pulau Pejantan.Once they add coverage to these islands then this book will be perfection. This book also a lot of information on Indonesian culture, about a 40% overlap with the culture shock indonesia book.

So far I plan a 2 month trip to indonesia.Fly to hong kong, spend 1-2 nights there. Then fly to malaysia or jakarta (whichever is cheaper). Then take a boat to Pontianak, spend some time there and sinkawang (probably a week).Check out the islands between kalimantan and sumatra (1-2 weeks). Then go to the todgean islands, getting their via ujung padang to ambon and then spend the rest of the time (probably a month) chillin and snorkeling / scuba diving. Then go back trhough jakarta or malaysia, spend another 1-2 nights in hong kong, and then come home.

This edition and it`s excellent predecessors haveplayed a major part in assisting me in all of my travels to Indonesia, inboth the planning and research stages, and during the travel itself.I amcertain that I would not have travelled to some of the unique and rarelyvisited places that Iwas privileged to see without the aid of thisweighty and at times indispensible tome.

Product Description
Nucleic Acids presents an up-to-date and comprehensive account of the structures and physical chemistry properties of nucleic acids, with special emphasis on biological function. With a targeted audience of 1)molecular biologists, 2)physical biochemists, and 3)physical chemists, the book has been carefully organized to reach three different audiences while requiring only introductory physical chemistry and molecular biology as prerequisites. Nucleic Acids will serve as a textbook in physical biochemistry and biophysical chemistry classes, as well as a supplemental text in courses on nucleic acid biochemistry or molecular biology, and as a personal reference for students and researchers in these fields. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good lecture for graduate students
This is a high level biochemistry and biophysic book with a deep emphasis in nucleic acids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Link to review
Authors are well known researchers in the field of nucleic acid biophysics. For detailed review of the book, look at J. Am. Chem. Soc., 122 (46), 11570 (2000).

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text
This book is a revised edition of the original text by Bloomfield, Crothers, and Tinoco. A previous book written by this team discusses the Physical Chemistry of Nucleic Acids. The team continues in that tradition of good writing here.

It seems that the standard text for the study of nucleic acids is that by Saenger. But this text is also strong, to use either side by side with Saenger, or even on its own.

Illustrations are clear (although, no really pretty pictures except at the very end), and the writing is quite fluid and intelligible. This book, however, is not a book for beginners (ie. a person who's never read up on nucleic acids before). There tends to be some presupposition in the knowledge and technical jargon such that I think it would better serve as a reference for more advanced students and scientists.

The authors are recognized in the scientific world as being experts in their field, so it comes as no surprise that the text is full of good information.

Where the book falls short is as follows. The book is not very even in terms of the topics it covers. Another downside is that the book fails to discuss many of the newer experimental methods and discoveries, and in that sense is more out of date than you would like.

A good way to compensate for the two aforementioned problems is to supplement your reading with a text like Saenger, and to keep up to date with the current journal literature (if you're interested in methods, the first place to look is a place like Meth. Enzym.; if you're interested in reviews and other articles, turn to journals like Cell, Nature, Science, PNAS, and Biochemistry. If you're into more specialized stuff, consider these journals: 1)Nucleic Acids Research, and 2)RNA ).

Good luck. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An Early Work.
Street of the Five Moons by Elizabeth Peters is interesting in that is an earlier work, 1978 to be exact, and reading it showed how the author has grown over the years.Victoria Bliss, expert in medieval art gets mixed up with European art forgers. She is attractive, intelligent, well educated, but looks and sounds like a Vegas showgirl.Anti-hero John is an interesting mix of English aristocracy and modern crook, some of the dialogue between these characters is hilarious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining sequel to Borrower of the Night
This is the 2nd book in the Vicky Bliss series, and even though it's been around for a while, there's not much in it to 'date' it, so it's just as enjoyable now as it was when first published. Elizabeth Peters wrote the first book (Borrower of the Night), and a couple of sequels, then let the Vicky Bliss novels rest for many years, until returning to them again fairly recently. There's no trace of the gap. All are filled with humor and wit. The characters are well-rounded and (mostly!) believeable. The mystery is always tied to the art/antiquities world, and the snapshots of the foreign cities and countries in which the action occurs are always vivid. Elizabeth Peters is a 'must-read' author for those who like a light, fun, take on mystery and romance (with just a dash of education thrown in). As this is the book that begins to make this a 'series', new characters are introduced who will weave in and out of all subsequent volumes, along with some 'old friends' from the first volume.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Than The First Installment, But No Much Else Going For It!
This was the second installment in the Bliss franchise. It was better than the first, but it was not nearly as good as any of the Peabody books. It started out as though it could play on that level, but failed to meet any of that promise. The reason why? Well, I think it rests in the fact that Bliss sits about all day and carps about her goods looks and then fails to impress with her brilliance. She simply keeps going, but only because she has to do so, not because she is hot on the trail of any insight. This makes for a boring book, and one not too interesting. All in all, this needed more brains, less bust to make a good story for Vicky.

3-0 out of 5 stars Street of the Five Moons Review
While this book made for a good read, and has enticed me to want more, I found the ending to be a bit abrupt. The Character Vicky Bliss is in a terriable crunch and all the sudden we shift gears to the sumation wrap up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Zen and the Art of the Mystery
This book has been amply and well-reviewed; however, I would like to add this short comment.

Experts sometimes make things appear so simple that we think that what they are doing is simple to do. "Street of the Five Moons" is breezy and refreshing. It does all those things a mystery novel is supposed to do and to prove it Ms Mertz(Peters)through the protagonist, Vicky Bliss, comments on it with a wink. Through a blitzkrieg plot and perfect prose, she presents us with a ballsy heroine, a handsome thief, a nefarious gang, a crazy villain, and a travelogue of Rome.

For a quick, brilliant read, set in a beautiful locale, this is perfect escapist mystery. Be aware, however, that this is not a psychological mystery with a troubled protagonist. For that sort of thing look elsewhere.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Bad debts are by far the most common cause of bank failure. In recent years international banks have suffered very large losses due to the non-repayment of loans, or because of provisions against non-repayment, and the size of these losses has at times posed a serious threat to financial stability. This book provides a self-contained, authoritative and coherent treatment of the issue of loan loss provisioning by banks in an international context. The authors examine the issue from a number of different perspectives — accounting, regulatory, taxation, finance and economic — and demonstrate that there are wide national differences in the accounting treatment of bank loan losses. These inconsistencies lead to competitive distortions, as well as supervisory problems and potential macro-economic instability. The authors conclude that there is an urgent need for the harmonisation of national accounting standards in this hitherto neglected area of banking behaviour. The book features a unique compendium, provided by Price Waterhouse, of up-to-date information describing the accounting and regulatory treatment of impaired loans in 14 major countries. This will be an invaluable source of practical information for bank auditors, lending officers, compliance officers, treasurers, financial analysts, and bank supervisors. The authors are academic specialists in accounting and finance, and have undertaken extensive consultancy in this area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ILiked the Way s In Which It Was Unexpectedly Helpful
While this guide was useful in all the mundane ways (accomodation, eating), I'm grateful to for the way it got me thinking about some of the less understandable aspects of Singapore. After a couple of days of walking around S'pore I began to wonder at the odd sense of artificiality about the place, and the strange way my hosts and others talked of the city-state.I was glad to be reffered to Stan Sesser's book *The Lands of Charm and Cruelty*, which told me of "the fear that even the best educated Singaporeans feel towards their government."I am also grateful to this guide for steering me towards Ian Buruma's essay "The Nanny State of Asia," in his book *The Missionary and the Libertine*, which went into a lot of detail about the police state behind the facade of Singapore's clean toilets, etc.The guide was useful in all practical matters, but by dealing with some of the unpleasantness that is the reality of Singapore, I came away with a better understanding of the place which grew increasingly creepy the longer I stayed.Lonely Planet Singapore is an excellent, thoughtful guide that did what it was supposed to do, yet also led me to other books which helped enrich my business trip. For understanding some aspects of Chinese behaviour in a business setting, I also recommend Bo Yang's *The Ugly Chinaman and the Crisis in Chinese Culture*.Paul Theroux's *Saint Jack* is a novel set in Singapore - though written in the 70's, I found the attitudes and actions of many of the characters still relevant to locals and expats of Singapore today.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference for Getting Around in Singapore
We found this book to be a very solid reference for transportation and side trips while traveling in Singapore.Compared to Fodor's Singapore guide, which we also carried, this book has more accurate and helpful information on sightseeing and transportation options, e.g., local places to buy bus or ferry tickets for side trips in Malaysia and Indonesia. The book is also a good source of ideas for exploring outlying islands, forests, and neighboring cities.

We were not impressed with the "Places to Eat" section. With two broad exceptions, the descriptions of "Places to Eat" and "Places to Stay" are too brief to be of much use in choosing a specific restaurant or hotel. However, each publisher covers hawker centers reasonably well.Lonely Planet's treatment of budget and alternative lodging arrangements--such as camping--seems fairly comprehensive. Finally, you will find more shopping advice in other guides, although this book's shopping section is not bad.

The information in the book is well organized and generally easy to find. While it is not a "pocket size" guide, its size (approx. 5 x 7 in. or12.5 x 18.5 cm) makes it very easy to take along in a backpack, camera bag, or briefcase. At 200 pages plus maps, it is light enough to go almost anywhere.

For getting around in the city and to more remote locations, we found ourselves relying on this book.If you are familiar with Singapore, have already arranged accommodations, or are more interested in exploring and side trips, the options in this book can take you much farther afield without stress.

Lonely Planet also maintains a very good website, which features detailed content, including updates about Singapore and other destinations.

Conclusions:
* This is a very useful little reference that is likely to become more useful as you become increasingly familiar with Singapore (i.e., the more you visit).
* Combined with the website, the book can prepare you well for nearly all aspects of a trip there, especially if you intend to use Singapore as a hub for excursions elsewhere.
* More detailed descriptions of hotels, including further treatment and recommendations in the top half, and more material in the shopping section would give the book a stronger appeal to a broader audience.
* First time travelers to Singapore (other than those with extremely limited budgets) or those who go only for the shopping may find the Fodor's guide more helpful.

Hope this helps!

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date, innaccurate, out of touch
As an American having lived in Singapore for much of the past 30 years, it seems to me Mr. Hellander hasn't spent much time there.Much of his 'facts' and 'tips' are out of date, or just plain wrong. His 'tips' onhotels and restuarants in particular seem to be based on marketing data, and not real world experience. If you are planning to go to Singapore, there are many other, better written and more accurate, books to read. This would not be one of them.Insight and Essential Explorer do a muchbetter job.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
This collection reveals the history of English common law and Empire law in a vastly changing world of British expansion. Dominating the legal field is the Commentaries of the Law of England by Sir William Blackstone, which first appeared in 1765. Reference works such as almanacs and catalogues continue to educate us by revealing the day-to-day workings of society.

Product Description

No project has more universal appeal among woodworkers at every skill level than the blanket chest. It’s a simple form — essentially a large box with a lid — and yet it can be complex, elaborate, and intricately detailed. This collection of 30 original designs by artisans from around the globe illustrates the versatility of the chest, one of the oldest forms of furniture. The book opens with an overview of chest-building techniques; following are the chests, each of which features design and construction details, working drawings, and technical details of the more challenging pieces. Chests range from traditional to contemporary and offer inspiration to woodworkers and furniture makers of all skill levels. Approximately 200 photos and 50 drawings illustrate these designs.
