Auszug: Daniel Webster "Dan" Hoan (1881-1961) was a United States politician. He became the second socialist mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his tenure is generally considered to be the longest continuous socialist administration in U.S. history. He was the second-longest serving mayor of Milwaukee. Daniel Webster Hoan was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on March 12, 1881. He left school early but he studied at evening classes and in 1908 qualified as a lawyer. A member of the Socialist Party, Hoan moved to Milwaukee where he worked closely with Victor Berger, the editor of the Socialist daily the Milwaukee Leader, in trying to persuade the city to adopt radical reforms. This included municipal ownership of utilities, urban renewal programs and free legal, medical and educational services. In 1910 Emil Seidel was elected mayor of Milwaukee and became the first socialist leader of a major city in the United States. The same year Hoan became Milwaukee's city attorney and over the next six years he clamped down on the corruption of public officials. In 1916 Hoan was elected as mayor of Milwaukee. Unlike many members of the Socialist Party, Hoan did not oppose United States entry into the First World War. Hoan remained mayor for twenty-four years, the longest continuous Socialist administration in United States history. He brought in a large number of progressive reforms including the country's first public housing project, Garden Homes, started in 1923. Hoan also led the successful drive towards municipal ownership of the stone quarry, street lighting, sewage disposal and water purification. During his admini...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
This collection reveals the history of English common law and Empire law in a vastly changing world of British expansion. Dominating the legal field is the Commentaries of the Law of England by Sir William Blackstone, which first appeared in 1765. Reference works such as almanacs and catalogues continue to educate us by revealing the day-to-day workings of society.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apology from the Alexandrian School
Overview: the 'Contra Gentes' is a single treatise that has been subsequently divided into two parts: the manuscript St Jerome possessed read, the "Adversus Gentes Libri Duo" (Jerome, Vir. Illus. ch. 87).Moderns have rather arbitrarily isolated the two parts in separate editions, in respect of the difference of subject matter; but this single volume remains true to the author's intentions and the manuscript tradition. The first treatise is an attack on the ancient-hellenic-religion and holds its proper title, the 'Contra Gentes,' or 'Against the Pagans.' The second, the 'De Incarnatione Verbi Dei,' or the 'On the Incarnation of the Word of God,' is an explanation of the Faith, through rational proofs, on the necessity, the purpose and the end, or goal, of the Logos' incarnation. As an apology, Athanasius was not generally writing to a christian audience--although it was greatly edifying for those who did--but both treatises are, very plainly, aimed at exhorting and removing the disbelief of traditional pagans, hermetists and gnosticizing christians. There is no reason to suggest that these treatises were directed towards refuting the Arian faction. There is no overt mention of Arius, or of the upstart heterodox sect he fathered in these two tractates; nor does the title suggest that its contents are even minutely involved with any major facet of the Controversy.Instead, all evidence points to a date of composition prior to 318 AD, in the very green years of Athanasius' life.In sum, these two treatises are, in the words of S.G. Hall a "theological manifesto" (Doctrine and Practice in the Early Church pg. 139), as they are the first-fruits of a fully developed Alexandrian Orthodoxy, of which St Athanasius was the inheritor and prime expositor.

Analysis: the first part, is a negative polemic directly concerned with the refutation of the old hellenic religion--its beliefs and practices--wherein St Athanasius makes a keen effort to explain the origin of idolatry and its progression in terms of a "degeneration" from the true divine image in the soul, which prior to man's fall was totally illuminated and enraptured by the divine will and truth, to a darkening of the soul which, not only turns from God to the self, but expends all its energy chasing after external things--external "images" to which the degenerate soul's faulty and debased judgment confers a divine status upon.Interestingly, but not surprisingly, Athanasius' theory on the origin of idolatry unfolds from his theory of Evil, which all of itself is permeated with a distinctly Platonic air that gratuitously fills a Christian atmosphere.Athanasius' theory views evil strictly within negative terms, as an essentially non-existent by-product of a defective will.Evil is not an entity, per se, or any entity, for that matter (in this way, he anticipates Proclus, who regarded evil as privation, while he his out of line with the Plotinian theory that unsubstantiated matter is evil); rather, the soul projects its own darkened fantasies upon sensible entities, desires them as "goods" and misuses them to its own hurt. This declension from the divine and intelligible light to the mundane, cavernous "darkness," is Athanasius' mystical interpretation of the Fall of Man; and it is representative of the Platonic dogma of the souls descent in Christian ornament. The difference between an Athanasius and say, a Plotinus, is only detectable as a matter of the locus of descent: Athanasius localizes the souls descent in the Garden of Eden, whereas the Platonists localize it in the en-Cosmic Soul, where souls individually chose the bodies they would join under a misguided, but necessitated, desire for them.Moving on, Athanasius also attacks the fables of the poets and derails the common notions that idolaters held to fortify their reasons for the use of images in their cultus; and he explains how polytheism is responsible for abominable human sacrifice and the immorality pervasive in pagan culture. Also, Athanasius proposes proofs for the immortality of the soul, explicates its affinity with God and upholds a monistic theology, over and above, the pantheism of the philosophers. At last, Athanasius begins to usher in the elements of his next theme, on the incarnation of the Logos, as he begins discussing the reasonableness of the Divine Word, as touching the Divine unity and its function in the cosmic order.

Turning now to the second part (a positive polemic) of the 'Contra Gentes,' Athanasius begins by challenging the philosophical doctrines concerning the creation, by refuting Epicurean materialism, the Platonic primordial matter theory and the dualism of the Gnostics, setting forth the Christian doctrine of 'creatio ex nihilo' in oppositon to them.Next, Athanasius posits his reasons for the Incarnation: first, man lost his principle of Life, when he lapsed from the Logos. Thus restoration, the entire soteriological plan, could only be effected by the intercession of the incarnate Word of Life.Second, post-lapsarian man debased his reason [or rational-principle], which was his gnostic linkage with God and therefore of necessity needed the Logos, the incarnate Rational-Principle,to atone, purify and restore it.Moving on, Athanasius then furnishes a comprehensive tome on the Death and Resurrection of Christ; and at last, he refutes the Hebrews disbelief in the Incarnation through the fulfillment of prophecies and the skepticism of the Pagans, through pointing out how their own Logos may conceivably be manifested in human form and mediate the Divine to all human nature. In closing, Athanasius signals the victory of Christianity over the old religion and admonishes its adherents to search for these proofs in Holy Scripture.

In Retrospect: the 'Contra Gentes' is one of the least celebrated treatises of one of Christianity's most celebrated saints, the great Doctor and Bishop Athanasius Alexandrinus (295-373 AD).The virtual obscurity of the 'Contra Gentes,' or 'Against the Gentiles,' may be first imputed to contemporary scholarships concentration on Athanasius' anti-Arian works. But this academic tendency is not unwarranted, for the anti-Arian corpus constitutes the vast majority of Athanasius' works. This is simply because the spread of Arianism facilitated the need for a Catholic voice to speak on behalf of--and to defend and propagate--orthodoxy in the face of its latest and most formidable nemesis, the Arian 'church'.Thus, the current-day apathy towards the 'Contra Gentes' stems from a sympathy which draws our attention to the Late-Roman drama, with the Arian Controversy at center-stage and St Athanasius as one of its biggest players and brightest stars. And secondly, the 'Contra Gentes' has been overlooked by the fact that the composition of the 'Contra Gentes' (in or about 318 AD) post-dates the inclusion of Christianity proximate to the level of the imperial cultus--which relatively reduces the utility of this treatise in terms of context and modern historical/doctrinal analysis--which is directed toward refuting the old religion in an empire that nonetheless had already embraced the new religion as her own.Had there been a rival Hellenistic church, of the type Julian had envisioned, existing in Athanasius' day, then this work would undoubtedly been of central interest to today's scholars and theologians. ... Product Description
The first modern, annotated translation of the Christian chronicles of Georgia, adapted by the Armenians in the thirteenth century. An important source for writers on Armenia after 1200, the chronicles deal with the history of Georgia from its mythical origins to the time of their composition--and are of particular interest to the historian for the way that they were then altered in a pro-Armenian manner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Response to the Previous Comment
I am a Georgian living in the US and I am quite offended by the ignorance of Georgian history portrayed by the reader from Germany. Georgian peoples have existed in the South Caucasus for millenia. Archeological findings have shown that Kartvelian, Svan, and Mingrelian tribes, who are Georgian peoples (Kartvelian =

5-0 out of 5 stars Was quite interesting
After the invention of a national script, c.400 AD, Armenians rapidly developed their own literary forms, drawing on foreign texts as well as their own traditions. Historical writing is the most original genre in classical and medieval Armenian literature. Greek works (including the Chronicle of Eusebius, now lost in Greek but preserved in Armenian) constituted the major part of translated histories. But in the thirteenth century the extensice Chronicle of the Syrian Patriarch Michael and the first part of the Georgian chronicles were adapted for an Armenian readership. The collection known as the 'Georgian Chronicles' was finally codified in the eighteenth century and represents only a small part of Georgian historical writing. The thirteenth century Armenian version is in fact the earliest attestation of this growing corpus of texts, predating all extant Georgian manuscripts of it. This book presents the two texts, Georgian and Armenian, in English translation for the first time. The Introduction and Commentary draw attention to the ways in which the unknown Armenian translator changed his original material in a pro-Armenian fashion. His rendering became the standard source for early Georgian history used by later Armenian historians. The book includes a useful overview of the background to the chronicles, the history and culture of Christian Georgia and Armenia, and their respective languages and literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do people believe this BS?
(i could not give a ZERO star since the system did not allow it)
WOW, incredible,

yes it IS a rewrite of history... I am German and in our schools we read many history books, and none of them have claimed the Georgians to have existed before the armenians, it was the opposite, considering the fact that the #1 comes before #2, logic implies that Ur/Armenos/Hayasa, as this is what they were called in the BC timespan existed and the Georgians didnt, the Armenians had a language, but the Georgians didnt even exist yet. as it is writen by not only Greek and Roman historians but of Original Arabic decent historians from that time period, whose books were not burned and distroyed, they were preserved in their countries.

The Armenian language has been studied by anthropoligists, historians, lingists, and other academic scholars from Germany, England, America, and so on... however the Georgian language is one that they adapted FROM the Armenians...

This book would be in the same category to a book about how Hitler was actually attacked by the Jews and not the opposite... does that make sence? no it does not... therefore this book is untrue, it is a falsity, and it is a discrace that someone took the time to attempt to discredit the entire world...

Please read books by French historians, American anthropoligists, and German Linguists, from all of the different views you will only come up with one conclusion, they all state that the Armenians and their language are one of the oldest and purest languages and culture (unmixed and unadapted from others)

Please dont be swayed by some minority of people's who attempt on a daily basis to distort the history of the entire European and American countries.

I say to the person who wrote this book, how about try your attempts on the Greeks. say that the Greeks adapted your language? wait you cannot since they lived much before you did, but that is the same case with the Armenians, they lived much before you did. The Armenians and the Greeks lived as rulers in the same time period.
