Therapeutic immunosuppression has very broad applications inclinical medicine, ranging from prevention and treatment of organ andbone marrow transplant rejection, management of various autoimmunedisorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), skin disease, and asthma.Whereas traditionally only a small repertoire of immunosuppressiveagents was available for clinical use, recent discoveries havesignificantly increased the number of approved agents, resulting innumerous trials to further evaluate their potential. In addition,products of the biotechnology industry -- monoclonal antibodies,cytokines, cytokine antagonists, and other products of geneticengineering that target key molecular pathways in disease pathogenesis-- have either already made, or are on the verge of making animportant impact on treatment. There is also considerable interest inthe potential of cell-based therapies (particularly hematopoietic stemand dendritic cell therapy) of allo- and autoimmunity. Importantrecent advances in the immunotherapy of allergic diseases are alsocovered in this book. Gene therapy offers considerable promise forsuppressing pathogenic processes in either transplantation orautoimmune disorders. The possibility of combining these important newadvances to maximize benefit to the patient, and to minimize possibleuntoward effects (which are also given extensive coverage in thisbook), is one of the most exciting challenges of contemporarymedicine.

This is the first translation of the late ninth-century Armenian commentary on the Book of Proverbs by Hamam, who is better known for his commentary on grammar. Armenian biblical exegesis is a little explored field, and this is one of the earliest surviving examples of the commentary genre. The text survives in a single manuscript, first published in Erevan in 1994. The Armenian text presented here is re-edited on the basis of a new reading of Matenadaran 1151. In the introduction Professor Thomson places this commentary in the context of Armenian theological tradition, contrasting Hamam's approach with the few surviving earlier Armenian biblical commentaries. He also notes the differences between Hamam and the previous major Greek and Syrian patristic commentators. The notes to the English translation elucidate textual and other problems. Two later Armenian commentaries on Proverbs exist, by Nerses of Lambron and Grigor of Tat'ev.
