A great book with a great CD
I really loved this piano book.I had an old one from the 50's and the pages were crumbling so I really need a new one. While there are numerous studies of God in the Old Testament, the concept of God has largely been ignored as a subject of inquiry in contemporary New Testament theology. As this superb work by Marianne Meye Thompson shows, however, an understanding of the identity of God is central to the New Testament, particularly to the Gospel of John.

Thompson herre offers the first comprehensive study of the concept of God in John's Gospel. She shows that one must first grasp the importance of God to John before one can properly appreciate the Gospel's Christology and overarching message. By arguing that John is rightly understood to be a "theocentric" work, Thompson challenges the prevailing theory that John is primarily concerned with Christology.

While Thompson uses traditional historical and exegetical approaches to the New Testament and ancient sources, her study is mainly theological in scope. She asks how John portrays God and how, after reading the Gospel, we ought to speak of the identity of God. Unlike many recent studies of John, this one does not try to reconstruct the history behind the text but, rather, tries to fully illumine the theological content of John's message.

Who is God in John?
Thompson is a master scholar, elucidating the concept and experience of God in the Gospel of St John. She posits that God the Father is the main subject of the gospel, and taht only in relation to the Father is Jesus properly understood as the one who is "with God" and "is God". An interesting analysis of the Paraclete reveals that the Spirit is not some sort of replacement for the risen Christ, but one of the Father's "two hands".

This is really a needed work. She is right in stressing the fact that approaching God by means other than the Father can distort John's purpose. For he uses Jesus as the person who revales the face of the Father to us. There is a tendancy in exegesis to hold orthodox positions (i.e., that Jesus is actually God equal to the Father) for the wrong reasons, thus leaving orthodoxy open to criticisms that really are unfounded. Thompson's book is a needed corrective in this regard. Enjoy this great book!

Thompson's other great books, The Promise of the Father and The Incarnate Word are really worth looking into. For another defense of Christ's full divinity, see Jesus As God by Harris (although he may need THompson's corrective in a few places, but those are places for you to find!). ... Read more

Good learning tool
I purchased this book so that my granddaughter could practice her piano lessons at my house. The John Thompson Method is the one I learned by. It is a great learning tool. Everything is spelled out for the student with graphics for the new notes to be learned. This book makes it pleasant for the student to practice.

A serious book that, if read, would be found enjoyable by people employed in the publishing industry, those interested generally in fast-changing business sectors, writers, and all others with an eye to cultural shifts.

John B. Thompson's effort explains much of the mystery of how books get published, what goes into marketing titles, and why some authors make millions. More important, Professor Thompson clearly explains, with little use of academic jargon, the epic changes (computers, business consolidation, the Internet, Kindle, etc.) of the last few decades in book publishing---from the corner independent bookstore to Amazon.com.Wisely, he sticks with the New York and London centers of serious print publishing instead of trying to cover India, China, and the rest of the known world.

I, for one, will be interested to read in about five-years time Professor Thompson's then thinking on the full range of changes to publishers and writers as wrought by Kindle and other such apparently transformational products. ... Read more
