Excerpt: George Thomas Temple-Poole (born George Thomas Temple, 29 May 1856 27 February 1934) was a British architect and public servant, primarily known for his work in Western Australia from 1886. As Western Australia's Government architect, in a period of rapid urban development during the gold boom, he made notable contributions to Australian architecture and town planning prior to federation. His designs for public space and buildings are often identified and preserved by local councils and heritage registers. He also held roles relating to town planning, commerce, the Arts and 'society' of Western Australia. His founding and chairing of committees and institutions included; the Western Australian Institute of Architects (later merged to the RAIA), Perth Park (Kings Park Board) and the Wilgie Sketching Society. George Temple-Poole was born in Rome, Italy to Louise Mary, née Poole, and John George Temple, a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army. Poole's father died shortly after the family returned to England following the Crimean War. His mother remarried, altering his surname to Temple-Poole. He was educated at Winchester College in England. Articled in engineering and architecture to a London engineering firm designing harbour works for the Thames, he then practised in Sri Lanka Ceylon for two years before being appointed to the Public Works department in Western Australia. Poole (the surname he used in Perth) designed a 'series' of public buildings that were constructed in and around ports, towns and suburbs of Western Australia during the Federation Period c. 1890 - c. 1915. While his work was largely influenced by contemporary British movements, Poole contributed in the development of the Australian architectural response to environment an... Excerpt: The Elim Pentecostal Church (EPC) is a UK-based Pentecostal Christian denomination. George Jeffreys (18891962), a Welshman, founded the Elim Pentecostal Church in Monaghan, Ireland in 1915. Jeffreys was an evangelist with a Welsh Congregational church background. He was converted at age 15 during the Welsh Revival of 1904. Alexander A. Boddy, Vicar of All Saints, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland invited him to preach at his International Pentecostal Convention in Sunderland in May 1913. Between 1915 and 1934, Jeffreys was extremely active as a revivalist, and preached to large crowds throughout the United Kingdom. The church was brought together, first as the Elim Evangelistic Band, but this was changed to Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance when the Deed Poll was registered in April 1934. The name 'Elim' was taken from the account in the Book of Exodus, chapter 15, verse 27, where the Israelites, leaving the bondage of Egypt under the leadership of Moses, found an oasis called Elim: "Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters." This represented a place of refreshing and it was thought appropriate for a revival movement at that time. Differences of opinion over Jeffrey's open aspousal of British Israelism and disputes on church governance led Jeffreys to withdraw from the Elim Pentecostal Church in 1939 and to form the Bible-Pattern Church Fellowship in Nottingham, which founded other churches throughout England until the 1960s, but that now only continues as a small fellowship. The presidency of Elim then passed to...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=435896 ... Read more

Where is that fire which once descended On thy Apostles ? thou didst then Keep open house, richly attended, Feasting all comers by twelve chosen men. Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow, That the'earth did like a heaven appear: The stars were coming down to know If they might mend their wages, and serve here. The sun, which once did shine alone, Hung down his head, and wish'd for night, When he beheld twelve suns for one Going about the world, and giving light. But since those pipes of gold, which brought That cordial water to our ground, Were cut and martyr'd by the fault Of those who did themselves thro' their side wound; Thou shutt'st the door, and keep'st within; Scarce a good joy creeps through the chink : And if the braves of conquering sin Did not excite thee, we should wholly sink.Lord, though we change, thou art the same ; The same sweet God of love and light: Restore this day, for thy great name, Unto his ancient and miraculous right.XXXI. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Thomas Becket (1118 - 29 December 1170), later also known as Thomas à Becket, was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. He engaged in conflict with Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church and was assassinated by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after the death of Thomas Becket, Pope Alexander canonised him and the murdered priest was elevated to sainthood. The monks were afraid that Becket's body might be stolen. To prevent this from happening, Becket's marble coffin was placed in the crypt of the cathedral. The monks also built a stone wall in front of the tomb. There were two gaps in the wall where pilgrims could insert their heads and kiss the tomb. In 1220, Becket's bones were moved to a new gold-plated and bejewelled shrine behind the hig...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt:Archbishop Adam Loftus Adam Loftus (c. 1533 5 April 1605) was Archbishop of Armagh , and later Dublin , and Lord Chancellor of Ireland from 1581. He was also the first Provost of Trinity College, Dublin . Early life Loftus was born in 1533, the second son of a monastic bailiff , Edward Loftus, in the heart of the English Yorkshire Dales . Edward died when Loftus was only 8, leaving his estates to his elder brother Robert Loftus. Edward had made his living through the Catholic Church, but Adam embraced the Protestant faith early in his development. As an undergraduate at Trinity College, Cambridge , Adam reportedly attracted the notice of the young Queen Elizabeth, as much by his physique as through the power of his intellect, having shone before her in oratory. There is good reason to believe that this particular encounter may never have taken place; but they certainly met more than once and the Queen became his patron. The relationship was to last her entire reign, coming to Adam's rescue at times in his career when less tolerant patrons might have held back. At Cambridge he took holy orders (as a Catholic priest, though England had just turned Protestant) and was named rector of Outwell St Clement in Norfolk. He came to the attention of the Catholic Queen Mary (1553-1558), who named him vicar of Gedney in Lincolnshire. On Elizabeth's accession in 1558 he declared himself Anglican - a wise move. ... ...
