Product Description
Featuring more than 150 easy recipes using common ingredients, a cookbook originally self-published by the author offers healthy alternatives that taste good for those who want to control weight and eat foods appropriate for heart conditions and other health problems.Amazon.com Review
You know the drill: to lose those extra pounds that have been adding up, you resolve to follow a plan of rigorous exercise and strict dieting. You stick with it for a week or two, then--just when you're breaking out the celery sticks and rice cakes for lunch--somebody shoves a chocolate brownie under your nose, and it's all over! Author Joanna Lund is all too familiar with the dieter's roller coaster; by her own estimation, she has shed at least 1,000 pounds--and regained at least 1,150--over the years. Finally, she realized the secret was to aim for a healthier lifestyle rather than a miraculous instant weight loss. Pretty soon, she was cooking up new recipes that were low in fats, sugars, and sodium; easy to make; and delicious to eat. These recipes are at the heart of Healthy Exchanges.

Lund's goals are twofold: to exchange old, bad habits for new, healthy ones, and to exchange ingredients that are high in fat and sugar for those that--although lower in such contents--still retain the original flavor, appearance, and aroma. Plus, she says, "If it takes longer to fix it than it takes to eat it, forget it!" Lund takes the deprivation out of low-fat diets: pizza, banana cream pie, and tacos are all on the menu, in addition to green salads, soups and pastas. Healthy Exchanges Cookbook doesn't promise to melt those pounds off overnight, but it does guarantee a healthier approach to eating that will benefit every member of the family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!
This is a great book. Over the years, these dishes always made a great hit, especially the pies!! In 2005 I had to go in for gallbladder surgery and was put on a low-fat diet prior to surgery. Initially I dreaded the diet because it meant depriving myself of my favorite foods. But then I remembered I had this book. Pulled it out and let me say, that week long pre-surgery diet was not bad at all--I got to have my cheesecake and eat it too LOL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good.Basic.Easy.
I purchased this book years and years ago (1997?) after watching her cooking show on PBS.Back then, I didn't have internet, so I couldn't research things the way I do now.It came as a two-book set along with HELP:Healthy Exchanges Lifestyle Plan. That book is more informational, and although it is a good read, I won't review it here.I remember using this cookbook quite a bit when I first got it (I was single and cooking for one back then), but I eventually shelved it.I actually thought I had donated it long ago.I recently began to search for some low calorie recipes and remembered enjoying this.I even remembered Joanna's name her story from watching that PBS episode.Well, a thorough search of my cookbook cabinet revealed that I still had this one, so I've renewed my interest.

The recipes in this book are very easy. They require common ingredients and none of them take too long to make.I particularly like the dessert section. With recipes like "Truck Stop Biscuits and Gravy" and "Mexican Swiss Steak", these dishes appeal most to the meat and potatoes lovers. There are also lots of variations of casseroles. Many of the recipes can be frozen, and she indicates this with a little snowflake icon at the top of the page. All the nutrition information is included, including exchange information for diabetics.

Now that I'm older, married, and have kids, it is a little harder to fully adopt any particular style of eating. Many of her recipes contain lots of processed "low-fat", "fat free", or "sugar free" foods (she could have been a spokesperson for Jell-O).My husband and I generally prefer organic over processed, ethnic over meat-n-potatoes, and stir fried over casseroles. However, there are some nights when we just need EASY.Besides, even the processed stuff is fine in moderation.

If you are going to use a lot of these recipes, simply add a salad (one of her recipes or your own) and lots of fresh fruits and veggies. If you do, I think you will find many recipes to enjoy in this book.Besides, the price is really low right now, which makes it even better.Just an FYI, this book contains no pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid foundation for good health
I thoroughly enjoy the late JoAnna Lund's "Healthy Exchanges" cookbook.By the time I finished reading the book she felt like a friend I had known for years. In addition to some very easy, healthy recipes there are many tips for making "healthy" taste and look good. This is a timeless book for all who are watching their weight, dealing with diabetes or just want to lead a healthier lifestyle.I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong!
A penny! You can get this book for a penny and there will be enough recipes here to keep you cooking for months! I recommend this book, as well as the "Healthy Exchanges Lifetime Plan", to anyone! Especially if you have kids or a reluctant spouse. They are not going to know that you are cooking healthy food, only that they love it! ... Read more

Product Description
Following such luminaries as Newton, Jung, St. Thomas Aquinas and Zosimus, who devoted most of their lives to searching for the Philosopher's Stone, Peter Marshall set out to unearth the secrets of alchemy in the lands where it was traditionally practiced. The result is a fascinating piece of historical, scientific and philosophical detection, as well as an exciting physical and spiritual adventure. Exploring the beliefs and practices, the myths and the symbols of the alchemists, Peter Marshall takes us on an enthralling journey into this arcane world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In search of "the stone"...
I enjoyed this book, with a few reservations. The range of content covered was excellent, and the author's clear prose made for an easily-understood journey through the many streams of Alchemy (islam, Chinese, Western, etc).

However, his writing style at times is almost "too" dispassionate, and on a few occasions he seems to not follow-through with an intriguing line of enquiry. For instance, taking the Rosicrucian documents of the early 17th century at face value, rather than mentioning their more allegorical significance, as outlined by Paul Foster Case in "The True And Invisible Rosicrucian Order".
Or after an important meeting in his search for Chinese alchemy, he admits afterwards that he forgot to ask several key questions of his subject. Better planning, Peter!

In terms of narrative drive, Marshall is no match for Graeme Hancock's "Fingerprints of The Gods", although that author's later works (e.g. "Supernatural") have become, to my mind, almost too zealous.

In summary, I would say Marshall has done an admirable job, and can recommend this book. He has since written a book focussing soley on Prague and the court of Rudolph II, which was apparently published in September of this year, but I've not found listed on Amazon yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious and Honest
This is really an excellent book!Globe-trotter and author Peter Marshall provides a fascinating overview of the history of alchemy in diverse cultures in both ancient and modern times.I am struck by the author's candor and sincerity, never pretending to know something he doesn't know in this arcane field of study.

Light workers, Healers, Seekers, and would-be Alchemists would do well to start here with this book, before tackling the clasic texts and the actual Practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars From confusion to clarity, chaos to harmony, desert to home.
From the moment I took this book into my hands I struggled to put it down. Not knowing anything about alchemy this book probably was the best introduction I could ask for. The book reads like a novel, taking the reader through all the paths of discovering more about alchemy. Loads of information is distilled into assessable paragraphs that contain the essence of each topic covered. Referenced material supporting the book is well documented in the back of the book enabling the serious reader to do further research on the topic. Starting from ancient history, the book is organised in a chronological order to end in its significance for contemporary times. Each paragraph reveals a bit more of this fascinating and mysterious subject. Interviews, visits to significant sites, papers, quotes and interpretation of symbolism ignite the readers curiosity.Excitement grows within the reader to the extend of an expectation that the philosopher's stone might jump somewhere from the pages. True to the basic principles the author does not try to provide an objective view of alchemy. The author gets so passionately involved with alchemy that one wonders if the author might be biased towards seeing alchemic symbolism even where they do not exist. But after closing the last page of the book, the author most definitely has planted within the readers subconscious a seed of hope. Hope that there is more beyond the aims of immortality and turning metals into gold , towards actual transmutation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars fresh view on pastoralism
Very refreshing book with a (for me at least) new view on pastoralist life. This is certainly not only a book for those interested in history, but also provides valuable lessons and warnings for the present governance of fragile ecosystems in which pastoralists live. Away from all to common prejudices about failure of people to get the maximum out of their environment, the book provides a good insights into how and why apparant "laziness" of people actually contributes to their long term survival by maintaining ecological balances. Hence: commendable for everyone thinking about intstitutions needed to preserve open access commons!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great to skim through
My favorite part about the book is that it reminds the economist-type what economics is all about...its not necessarily about money, but about happiness. Why do we work?Because we have to.Wants are not limitless. To have a desirable lifestyle one can either increase income or decrease desire for material objects.

Outside of this, there's not too much merit in the book. After the first 2-3 chapters the rest of the book is pretty boring and provides no real insight. Only a philosopher or a very thorough anthropologist would find a reason to keep plugging away at this bore.

Some of the data certainly paints an incomplete and biased picture...see various other reviews on the Web for details.

Plus, the guy's an arrogant, snooty you-know-what (I found this out after reading the book so it didn't bias my opinion of it) so don't give him any royalties, buy used.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
He takes a subject that could be dry and dull, and makes it interesting.
The logical conclusion from this bookis that we should figure out what we really need materially, calculate how many hours we have to work to supply these needs, and not work a minute more.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Darker Side of the Original Affluent Society
I highly recommend this book for reasons mentioned by other reviewers.But...the data Sahlins uses to make his argument about the "Original Affluent Society" have been called into question on multiple grounds, notably 1) inadequate time-depth, 2) a restrictive definition of "work," and 3) contrary evidence suggesting that many foragers suffer from malnutrition.See David Kaplan, "The Darker Side of the Original Affluent Society," in the Journal of Anthropological Research (2001).

3-0 out of 5 stars interesting antropological economics
This is a well-known and rather old (1972) classic work on the economics of exchange as a cultural phenomenon. I remember this book was quoted several times during my studies of economics (and that was in the early 80s). I always kept the idea that as an economist I actually should read it myself, and so now i finally did.

The book is written from an anthropological angle and claims that stone age economies were the original affluent society. The claim is startling as it is original, as it runs counterintuitive; weren't people in early primitive (as defined by level of societal complexity) communities not always on the border of starvation and their needs much unfulfilled? Here the author points out that in the central concept of economics, scarcity, or the tension between wants and means, can be reduced either from the supply side (which is what modern production and exchange economies do) or on the demand side, the Zen way to happiness so to speak, by not having much of any demand. Within their own context such hunter-gatherer societies were therefore quite well-off and not on the brink of disaster. To have high wealth in the form of goods was simply not practical in this way of life as you had to carry all of it around hence slowing you down. Similarly, there was often an under-use of resources rather than a constant bumping against existence limits. Of course, there were very real Malthusian limits also as a result of the societal organization. Nevertheless, the point on scarcity is well made and can be seen as a (mild) critique of consumer society. It also bring the social and cultural context in which economics plays to the fore. At the same time, the author discusses the role of gift exchange in return for other goods as a social phenomenon next to the purely economic terms of exchange. Gifts and trade rather than war has a very real meaning in societies and is especially tangible in less complex groups, somethinh he shows in true antropologist fashion by referring to some interesting studies of several small societies in Africa and Polynesia.

The same idea also of course holds for more developed nations, but here the direct social relationships among and between much larger groups is much more anonymous and diffused.

I am an economist, not an anthroplogist, and found it very interesting to read this well-written and sometimes humorous book in order to realise once again how economics is a social science in the true sense of the word. Nothing to be ashamed about, and it is always good as a refresher to read from different angles on the fundamentals of your own profession.
