Product Description
The Oxford Introductions to U.S. Law: Property provides both a bird's eye overview of property law and an introduction to how property law affects larger concerns with individual autonomy, personhood, and economic organization. Written by two authorities on property law, this book gives students of property a coherent account of how property law works, with an emphasis on describing the central issues and policy debates. It is designed for law students who want a short and theoretically integrated treatment of the subject, as well as for lawyers who are interested in the conceptual foundations of the law of property. ... What a great book - there are lots of editions available on Amazon, including this brand new, crisply illustrated edition for slightly less: The Splendid Wayfaring: The story of the exploits and adventures of Jedediah Smith and his comrades, the Ashley-Henry men, discoverers and explorers of ... River to the Pacific Ocean, 1822-1831

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
With several editions of this book available, this review refers to the original 1920 publication. The book is an enjoyable and delightful account of Jedediah Smith and the men in his immediate circle who, over a period of eight years, explored and trapped the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific during the years 1823-1831.Although I did come across a few historical inaccuracies, this can be attributed to the fact that some documentation, letters, journals, etc. did not surface till later dates. For instance, James Clyman was with Smith during many of these exploits, and his "Journal of a Mountain Man" wasn't published until 1928. Dale Morgan's "Jedediah Smith And The Opening Of The West" which was published in 1953, gives the reader a more in depth study (with more historical documentation available at the time) into the character, achievements and defeats of this remarkable man.Neihardt's writing style is to be commended though, as he is very descriptive and expressive. ... Product Description
The first African American to receive a medical degree, this invaluable collection brings together the writings of James McCune Smith, one of the foremost intellectuals in antebellum America. The Selected Writings of James McCune Smith is one of the first anthologies featuring the works of this illustrious scholar.Perhaps best known for his introduction to Fredrick Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom, his influence is still found in a number of aspects of modern society and social interactions. And he was considered by many to be a prophet of the twenty-first century. One of the earliest advocates of the use of "black" instead of "colored," McCune Smith treated racial identities as social constructions, arguing that American literature, music, and dance would be shaped and defined by blacks.

Organized chronologically, the collection covers over 40 years of writing, including speeches, letters, and essays, and begins with McCune Smith's first speech as an 11-year old boy to the Marquis de Lafayette.Providing historical context for McCune Smith's current cultural relevance, this book showcases writings on black education and self-help, citizenship, and the fight against racism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtfully analytical criticism of the Anabaptist confessional argument during the Reformation Era
Separation And The Sword I Anabaptist Persuasion: Radical Confessional Rhetoric From Schleitheim To Dordrecht by Gerald Biesecker-Mast (Associate Professor of Communication at Bluffington University, Ohio) is a thoughtfully analytical criticism of the Anabaptist confessional argument during the Reformation Era. Diligently guiding readers through the intricate and highly detailed studies of Biesecker-Mast's analysis of the tensions and difficulties during the decades following the adoption of Schleitheim Brotherly Union in 1527, Separation And The Sword I Anabaptist Persuasion enlightens readers of the timeless intrigues of the Anabaptist radical significance in a time critically needing change. A work of considerable and seminal scholarship, Separation And The Sword I Anabaptist Persuasion is very strongly recommended reading for those who are searching for a Christian perspective of spirituality, as well as those engaged in a serious study of the historical movement of the Anabaptists.

Product Description
This new casebook is designed for a building block Property course that serves as a foundation for students remaining years in law school and beyond. It presents the subject through vivid cases, including most of those beloved by generations of property teachers. In contrast to other casebooks presenting property as a hodge-podge of issues, this book organizes the material in an integrated way, starting with the idea of property as the right to exclude and systematically developing elaborations, exceptions, and counterfoils to this idea. Issues of contemporary relevance such as intellectual property and regulatory takings are given relatively pervasive and expansive treatment. The emphasis throughout is on fundamental principles and policy questions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for First Year Property
I've only been in Property for one week, but this book has already helped me begin to grasp concepts without having to buy lots of other study aids and/or hornbooks. The cases and notes have multiple levels - I get through the basics on my own, and then go to class to find the deeper layers. The cases themselves are interesting, and the notes following (unlike in some casebooks) actually promote an understanding of what you've just read.In sum: it's a law school casebook and I haven't found anything bad to say about it yet!If you're interested in Property, this is definitely a useful resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Property - Clearer & More Relevant than Ever Before
Well organized and interesting.Thought provoking cases and commentary. My students have really enjoyed this book, its selected cases and editors' notes and food for thought. The organization seems logical and gives a fresh new twist/perspective on the topic.Plus, the quality of the book is high: nice big margins for note-taking, bright pages and well-bound exterior (one would think that any casebook costing north of $100 would present such quality, but sadly this is not the case).

While light on the estates & interests section (easily remedied with a supplement focusing on such topics), and even though the teacher's manual is very scarce (more questions than answers - which is fine, but many topics are skipped altogether), the book is a nice alternative for 1L Property. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars An agenda driven book with unsupported conclusions
The information presented in this book is semi-accurate, yet highly skewed. If Henry Plummer was an invalid who couldn't physically shoot a gun, how did he the job of sheriff? This is one of a plethora of unanswered questions left by the authors, though the speculation is interesting. There is a clear vendetta here against the vigilantes which goes to far to attempt to paint them all in a negative light while Plummer nearly attains a sainthood Mother Theresa would have difficulty living up to. I would recommend a read, yet I suggest a skeptical eye. The conclusions often are not supported by the evidence, and the evidence often supports opposite conclusions better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truth that is more exciting and intriguing than the myth!
Custer was a great military strategist, WA Clark was an honest man, The buffalo were not killed off by the white man, The Indians were murdering godless savages, Henry Plummer was a ringleader of desperadoes that killed 101 people in a year---------NOT!So much for the Hollywood style myths perpetuated by less than thorough historians. This book brilliantly debunks the Henry Plummer myth through careful reasearch, and demonstrates that the Vigilantes killed numerous innocent people (along with a few crooks) with nothing more than a desire to eliminate whoever got in their way. This is a well documented read that for the first time demonstrates that the truth indeed is more fascinating than the myth covering up the mob mentality of the Vigilantes.I grew up in Montana and looked at these Vigilantes as heroes. But after reading this brilliant delivery of the facts.....I find myself somewhat feeling burned by the history writers who self-servingly smeared everyone they hung (after they hung them).......including a verifiable honest hardworkding hispanic in Bannack that the Vigilantes referred to as the "Greaser".Of course there is author bias contained in the book, but behind the style and content of the authors are hard undeniable facts........facts that tell perhaps one of the most fascinating stories in the history of the west--a story untold until these two authors presented it.Read this book if you can get your hands on it.I did, and I am glad I did!!Was Henry Plummer a victim?Well if Custer was a Brillilant military strategist, then he was not.But only you can answer that question. ... For Joule's work it was, done in the fifth decade of the century, which demonstrated beyond all cavil that there is a precise and absolute equivalence between mechanical work and heat; that whatever the form of manifestation of molar motion, it can generate a definite and measurable amount of heat, and no more. Joule found, for example, that at the sea-level in Manchester a pound weight falling through seven hundred and seventy-two feet could generate enough heat to raise the temperature of a pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. There was nothing haphazard, nothing accidental, about this; it bore the stamp of unalterable law. ... Read more

Product Description
Her Books Have Helped and Challenged Millions of Christians Now Read About Her Extraordinary Life!

Hannah Whitall Smith wrote one of the most beloved Christian classics of all time The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life. And in the hundred years since their publication, her books have been read by millions of Christians who have been helped to discover the abundant life Jesus promised.

Yet so many difficult circumstances conspired to crush all joy and meaning from her life. It was the mid-1800s, and the approaching Civil War cast a spirit of tension and anxiety over the nation. As a young wife and mother, Hannah met the simple joys of life the love of her successful husband, the birth of her children with delight and hope. Then personal tragedy thundered in:

Her family would shun her for seeking spiritual answers outside her own Quaker upbringing.

Death would claim four of her children.

Her husband, a celebrated evangelist, suffered a nervous breakdown and later fell victim to a scandal that wrecked his ministry - and faith.

She would make a shocking discovery about her husband and his "female friends."

One by one, the faith of her three grown children became infected with the intellectual skepticism that was weakening the church.

Hannah Whitall Smith is a powerfully told biography that brings the charm, the strife of war, and the revivalist atmosphere of the 1800s vividly to life. More impor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides Social Context toSmith's Theology
I first read The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life in high school.I always remembered the way the author, Hannah Whitall Smith, described our relationship to God.Our job is to surrender and trust and obey our Creator, even when we don't understand or don't feel like it.God's job is to make us into happy, holy creatures and cultures.

I recently re-read this Christian classic as part of my research for the sermon What is God's Responsibility? This piqued my interest in the author so I also read this biography by Maire Henry.

The book is average in writing talent but fascinating in story and content.I highly recommend this book to provide social context to Smith's theolgy.

[SPOILER ALERT] Hannah's life was defined by disappointments. Her husband was a philandering manic-depressive.Half of her children (including the one she was closest to) died. The three children that were left all became intellectual atheists with troubled homes.Even her grandchild committed suicide.Hannah's primary ministry was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a traditionalist who wrote and preached on the side. Therefore, the lack of fruit in her ministry must have been frustrating and difficult to understand.

Is All Suffering Allowed By God?
Hannah was no hypocrite. Despite all of life's disappointments, she held to the belief that all suffering is "allowed" by God to make us holy and for purposes we may never understand in this life. No matter how disappointing life got, she clung to that belief. Hannah's life motto was a quote from Job, "Though He slay me, yet I will trust in Him."

I personally live my life by the same principle but hold this belief humbly since I have never suffered the tragedies others have. When we discussed the sovereignty of God at Yale Div School, I was the only student in two classes who spoke up for an all-powerful God.I remember one student whose three year old sister died in a freak drowning accident and another whose husband died a tragic death passionately arguing these tragedies were not "allowed" by God but that somehow He was impotent to stop them. They no longer asked God for things in prayer - the logical conclusion of a God who lacks power (although they enjoyed other forms of prayer).

The Missing F-factor
The most surprising aspect of Hannah's life was how lonely she was and her lack of Christian FELLOWSHIP.Sure, she corresponded by letter with other believers and spoke at Christian conferences but there is no mention of a small group or a church family.I assume she went to church but I am guessing she did not invest in those relationships as deeply as her biological family since there is no mention of them.Just goes to show you, none of these "Christian Heroes" are perfect and most Christian authors write overly-sympathetic hero-worship biographies instead of revealing the full complexities and contradictions that lie within all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian Secret to A Happy Life
I cannot recommend this Christian Classic enough! For those who are interested in those "so-called" deeper truths of a Christian's walk with the Lord it cannot be beat!I say "so-called" becauseas this wonderful Quaker lady points out there is such JOY when we areWALKING with the Lord Jesus Christ, our God, as God intended us to do:asHis obedient and fully trusting child!

This book is NOT only highlyaccurate theologically, but is very practical, and written on a level thatthe average person would find extremely readable. It starts out good andgets better with each chapter!

It is written to be highly encouraging, using many examples of our relationship with God as found in humanrelationships with each other: especially realtionship of child toparent.

It becomes readily apparent that Hannah speaks from experience,NOT just head knowledge. She writes with the same JOY that she must havelived her life on earth.Want JOY as a Christian? Then READ and APPLY!Ahighly practical and delightful book, easy to read for the ones seeking,The WAY, The TRUTH, and the LIFE (John 14:6) ... Read more

Product Description
In _Anabaptists and Postmodernity_, the radical Christian witness of sixteenth-century Anabaptists encounters the postmodern consumer culture of twenty-first century North America. Readers will find themselves in the middle of a vigorous conversation about the renewal in the secular West of Anabaptist-related intellectual and church life.

The book offers inderdisciplinary proposals for such renewal. First, the cultural and religious context for renewal is established through religious criticism of postmodern theories as well as revisionary analysis of historical and literary narratives. Second, concrete options for church transformation emerge through theological proposals for practical discipleship and ethical challenges to contemporary social habits. Throughout, writers ponder the visible shape of church witness in a dramatically changing world ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Champion and Critic of the Amish, Their Scribe and Their Prophet
This well-crafted biography is a significant contribution to the study of Amish Mennonite history and culture, yet it is more than that.Prize-winning poet Julia Kasdorf is so successful in presenting Joseph W. Yoder (1872-1956) as a real person in a credible narrative that I found Fixing Tradition hard to put down.

Kasdorf not only gives us Yoder as a real person, but makes a convincing case for why he merits the substantial study she has given him.Over many years he devoted considerable energy to the advancement of both higher education and popular singing among the Mennonites.Sometimes described as "the first successful Mennonite writer," he combated mainstream American misunderstanding of the Amish through his Rosanna of the Amish, which remains in print today.A controversial figure throughout much of his life, Yoder was a champion and a critic of the Amish, their scribe and their prophet. He was progressive, intriguing, enigmatic, and stubborn.

Kasdorf's portrayal of Yoder as a figure working to bridge Amish Mennonite society and mainstream American culture stimulates general questions about how high-commitment religious groups relate (and do not relate) to the dominant society around them.It also raises questions about the use and abuse of religious authority and the ways religious traditions speak to both their own adherents and outsiders.

Yoder's passionate opposition to the "prayer veil" worn by Mennonite women is an episode in early feminism, though the public voices in the controversy were those of men.It is also a vivid case study of how a particular practice may be connected to explosive questions of a religious tradition's self-understanding in an alien world.

Fixing Tradition opens windows on several notable social phenomena of a century ago, among them the pedagogy of singing in small communities, the widespread culture of bachelors, and "muscular Christianity" which under other names remains a vital factor in American religion today.Yoder's interests led him to stay connected with a wide variety of people and communities.

In this book's lovely epilogue, "Field Work and Folk Talk," Kasdorf recounts her research in the Big Valley region of Pennsylvania, an area that formed both her and Yoder.By approaching the people there with respect for their traditional emphasis on resemblance and repetition as ways of knowledge, she was able to enrich her understanding of someone who challenged tradition, who struggled to be both Amish and an American progressive.

Yoder's contemporary William Faulkner famously observed that "The past is never dead. It's not even past."Julia Kasdorf graciously suggests to the readers of Fixing Tradition that this is true for Joseph Yoder's people--and for all of us. ... Read more
