3-0 out of 5 stars Viewing definitions of monotheism
This is a neat little volume that discusses recent trends in monotheistic thinking from a critical perspective. Four authors contribute their thoughts on the growth of monotheism in ancient Israel and early Christianity. While all the authors accept the importance of monotheism for ancient Israel they all reject revelation as a source for monotheism. Instead they seem to accept the period of Hezekiah to Josiah as the more influential period for the formulation of Israel's monotheism. Authors reason from their evidence over against a lack of evidence for monotheism (Yahweh alone) but testimony from earlier periods (via the Bible) is dismissed as being later, edited, and less than reliable.

Redford's expertise with the Egyptian material allows him to quickly summarize relevant Egyptian material, especially that of Akhenaten. Pointed out are both the new advances from recent findings and the reminder of the paucity of material. On Akhenaten's "one-godism" Redford finds the most helpful text at Karnak but due to destruction and reuse he says, "not a single complete sentence is preserved either withina column or from column to column," 23.

Dever, well known for his archaeological expertise, presents an effective array of archaeological data in his discussion. Dever's description of the Taanach offering stand confuses the second and third rows. More confused, however, is the assumption associating a "very visible Asherah" (assumed identity of the goddess on the stand) with "an invisible Yahweh," 35.

The book is quickly read and says much more about each author's view of monotheism than the uniqueness of monotheism in ancient Israel. Chapters are quickly read even if not convincing. It would be most helpful as a summary for students seeking recent trends from an evolutionally view of religion. ... Read more

Product Description
Prophet Harris, The "Black Elijah" of West Africa offers theonly comprehensive study of the thought of William Wade Harris, the Glebo(Liberia) loyalist whose prophetic mission from 1910-29 moved tens ofthousands of West Africans out of traditional religion into the stream ofChristianity and modernization, particularly in the Ivory Coast. It reviews that unparalleled breakthrough, thoroughly examines traditionalAfrican, Western missionary and colonial influences which helped determinereligious innovation and shape his vocation as prophet of Christ's reign ofpeace and prosperity. Heretofore unused sources, enriched by documents andphotos, expose biblical eschatological and messianic dynamics which tiedHarris' words, symbols and charisma together in a holistic AfricanChristianity. The source of long-standing contentions between IvoirianHarrists, Methodists and Catholics is uncovered in the well-intentioned butchanging colonial and missionary responses to his impact. ... Excerpt: Milton William "Bill" Cooper (May 6, 1943 - November 5, 2001) was an American writer, shortwave broadcaster, conspiracy theorist, and the head of the largest civilian intelligence gathering operation ever created. Cooper came to public awareness in the late 1980s when he promulgated a number of theories dealing with the assassination of President Kennedy and alleged links between the United States government and various extra-terrestrial races. The son of a U.S. Air Force officer, Bill graduated in 1961 from Yamato High School in Japan, and enlisted in the U.S. Air force. He was honorably discharged in 1965. December of the same year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in Vietnam, rising to the rank of petty officer. Cooper was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with combat V and the Navy Achievement Medal with combat V. He was honorably discharged in 1975. Cooper's earliest notoriety developed among UFO enthusiasts, as he promoted UFO conspiracy theories, Kennedy assassination theories, and theories about a New World Order. Cooper became a popular speaker on the UFO lecture circuit, and expanded his account into the book Behold a Pale Horse. Cooper is perhaps best known for this 1991 book which details many of his claims about various conspiracy theories. The title is from the Bible, Revelation 6:8: "And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him." This includes the text of The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. Cooper placed a notice at the beginning of the chapter claiming that the Protocols were not about Jews but mer...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=535208 ... Read more

Excerpt: William Montgomery Watt (14 March 1909 24 October 2006) was a Scottish historian, an Emeritus Professor in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Watt was one of the foremost non-Muslim interpreters of Islam in the West, was an enormously influential scholar in the field of Islamic studies and a much-revered name for many Muslims all over the world." Watt's comprehensive biography of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad, Muhammad at Mecca (1953) and Muhammad at Medina (1956), are considered to be classics in the field. Watt, whose father died when he was only 14 months old, was born in Ceres, Fife, Scotland. Watt was a priest of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and was Arabic specialist to the Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem from 1943-46. He became a member of the ecumenical Iona Community in Scotland in 1960. He was Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh from 1964-79. The Islamic press have called him "the Last Orientalist". He died in Edinburgh on 24 October 2006 at the age of 97. Watt held visiting professorships at the University of Toronto, the Collège de France, and Georgetown University, and received the American Giorgio Levi Della Vida Medal and won, as its first recipient, the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies award for outstanding scholarship. Watt believed that the Qur'an was divinely inspired, though not infallibly true. Martin Forward, a 21st century Non-Muslim Islamic scholar states: His books have done much to emphasize the Prophets commitment to social justice; Watt has described him as being like an Old Testament prophet, who came to restore fair dealing and belief in one God to the Arabs, for whom these were or had become irrelevant concepts.
