I started reading this book to my daughter when she was three. The poems made her giggle and laugh out loud. She begged me for certain poems at bedtime, and I had nearly as good a time as she did.I still believe she absorbed a lot about the use of language from John Ciardi.
Now my daughter is 26, and this book is the first baby present I shall send her.It is a treasure! You Read to Me, I'll Read to You ... Read more

Published in honor of Dr. Ellis for his eightieth birthday and for his contributions to biblical scholarship, this book contains 21 articles written by internationally renowned New Testament scholars. In each article, the writer shares his/her keen insights on a cutting-edge issue in the study of the New Testament which has been central to Dr. Ellis' research and writings. The topics discussed in the book are diverse, ranging from New Testament history, text, and exegesis to theology and ethics.A number of articles are devoted to investigating how the Old Testament is used in the New Testament, an area to which Dr. Ellis has made the most significant contributions; a few articles are focused on exegetical or hermeneutical issues or authorship issues, and other articles deal with various theological issues including the "New Perspective" on Paul. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute
As per the Book Description above, this work was produced in honor of Dr. E. Earle Ellis.Works like this contain articles which relate to an area of research to which the honoree him/herself made significant contribution. In the case of Dr. Ellis, that contribution has been long lasting, diverse, and deep. That is saying a lot in our day of micro-specialization.To do justice to the description of this work, then, it is necessary to give the contents of the book in detail. So below is a table of contents, of sorts, divided according to the areas of research addressed in the book. For each section, the article titles and the names of their respective authors are presented.Incidentally, a review of those authors' names offers full justification for the "internationally renowned" tag attached to them in the Book Description above.

The festschrift is divided into four sections:

I.E. Earle Ellis

"A Biographical Sketch" by Gerald F. Hawthorne
"Curriculum Vitae"

II.Gospels and Acts

"Performing the Past: Gospel Genre and Identity Formation in the Context of Ancient History Writing" by Samuel Byrskog
"Ecclesial Reading of the Gospel of Mark" by James W. Voelz
"'This is that': The Authority of Scripture in the Acts of the Apostles" by Loveday Alexander
"The Estate of Publius on Malta (Acts 28:7)" by Richard Bauckham

III.Paul's Letters

"Romans and the Origin of Paul's Christology" by Paul W. Barnett
"Justification and Eschatology in Paul and Qumran: Romans and 4QMMT" by N. T. Wright
"Paul's Use of Habakkuk 2:4 in Romans 1:17: Reflections on Israel's Exile in Romans" by Mark A. Seifrid
"Did Paul Write Galatians?" by Harold W. Hoehner
"The Structure of 1 Thessalonians 1-3" by Seyoon Kim
"The (Greek) Old Testament in Philippians: 1:19 as Parade Example--Allusion, Echo, Proverb?" by John Reumann
"Old Testament Intertextuality in Colossians: Reflections on Pauline Christology and Gentile Inclusion in God's Story" by Gordon D. Fee
"to soma tou christou in Colossians 2:17" by Sang-Won (Aaron) Son (NOTE: The title uses the actual Greek letters, not the transliteration as given here.)
"Once More: Luke-Acts and the Pastoral Epistles" by Rainer Riesner
"Accountant Paul" Frederick W. Danker
"Merits and Limits of the 'New Perspective on the Apostle Paul'" by Klaus Haacker

IV.Perspectives on New Testament Interpretation

"The Place of Exegesis in the Postmodern World" by Donald A. Hagner
"Biblical Ethics: Multiplicity and Unity" by Birger Gerhardsson
"Changes to the Exegesis of the Catholic Epistles in the Light of the Text in Editio Critica Maior" by J. K. Elliott
"Translating [ho] Christos in the New Testament" by Marinus de Jonge (Again, the original contains the Greek.)
"Werner Georg Kümmel 1905-1995 Ein Neutestamenter im 20. Jahrhundert" by Otto Merk

Seldom can a review adequately summarize and evaluate a work of this kind because to do so would require comment on all of the articles individually and thus result in an all too long review. So no such attempt will be made here.Yet, a comment or two is in order.

The biographical sketch by Hawthorne will offer a surprise or two about the life of Dr. Ellis, even (and especially) for those who know him personally. The curriculum vita is 12 pages long and includes a list of 157 publications by Ellis. This demonstrates that Dr. Ellis contributed far more than is generally known.

All of the articles could/should be spotlighted, but suffice it to say that each will enlighten the reader and will aid in others' research in their respective specialties. Those writing commentaries, monographs, and articles should become conversant with the articles in this work before considering their research completed. ... Read more

At the time of their appearance the Empire of the Caliphate had vanished. What had once been a realm united under a sole Mohammadan ruler was now a collection of scattered dynasties, not one of which, save perhaps the Fatimids of Egypt (and they were schismatics) was capable of imperial sway. Spain and Africa, including the important province of Egypt, had long been lost to the Caliphs of Baghdad ; Northern Syria and Mesopotamia were in the hands of turbulent Arab chiefs, some of whom had founded dynasties; Persia was split up into the numerous governments of the Buwayhid princes (whose Shi'ite opinions left little respect for the puppet Caliphs of their time), or was held by sundry insignificant dynasts, each ready to attack the other, and thus contribute to the general weakness. The prevalence of schism increased the disunion of the various provinces of the vanished Empire. A drastic remedy was needed, and it was found in the invasion of the Turks. These rude nomads, unspoilt by town life and civilised indifference to religion, embraced Islam with all the fervour of their uncouth souls. They came to the rescue of a dying State, and revived it. They swarmed over Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, and Asia Minor, devastating the country, and exterminating every dynasty that existed there ; and, as the result, they once more united Mohammadan Asia, from the western frontier of Afghanistan to the Mediterranean, under one sovereign ; they put a new life into the expiring zeal of the Mus... ... Product Description
The financial turmoil of the late 1990s resulted partlyfrom an excessive dependency between countries and regions.Thisimportant and timely new book examines the growing interdependencybetween Europe and East Asia and provides suggestions to preventfinancial crises in the future.

Special attention is given to the contributions of international tradeand investment to deeper regional and global integration, andparticular emphasis is placed on major issues such as:

* the organization of multinationals and the relationship between exports and foreign direct investment
* Asian and European firms as global actors and the role of trade in the integration of the two regions
* the changing patterns of East Asian economies as host and home countries for direct investment

In conclusion the authors argue that more emphasis should be placed ondirect investment rather than speculative inflows. This will create amore stable environment for the contribution of foreign capital to thegrowth of East Asian economies, and reduce both dependency betweenregions and the risk of financial instability in the future.

The Global Integration of Europe and East Asia will be welcomedby those working in the fields of international economics andbusiness, European and Asian Studies and the globalization of theworld economy. ... Read more

Product Description
`The global financial crisis has demonstrated that good governance is not guaranteed by democracy; it has also shown that the capacity of electoral democracies to manage major issues of public policy has varied widely. This excellent comparative collection probes these questions through analysis of ten political systems in Asia, all of which have experienced major changes in recent years. By focussing on the concept of public governance as the key to preventing abuses of power and promoting the public interest, Bridges, Ho and their co-authors have moved the debate on Asian democratization beyond the narrow focus on electoral machinery to the wider issue of governance as the principal means to serve the public good.'
- James Cotton, Australian Defence Force Academy, Australia

This book documents the search for a workable model of democracy in Asia. It begins with two conceptual chapters that explore the role of electoral democracy as a governance mechanism in the light of other governance mechanisms, then reviews the various forms of Asian democracy, including those that many may consider to be in name rather than in substance, that have been practiced to date, and indicates where these models may have failed or succeeded. Underpinned by extensive case studies, valuable insights into governance and democracy in Asia - arguably one of the most fascinating and dynamic regions in the world - are provided.

The contributors chart the historical development of democracy (or democratic aspirations) within their respective countries/territories, and analyse both the positive and the negative influences on democratization. They assess whether the particular form of democracy (or lack of, as the case may be) that has developed brings benefit or harm to the people living in the countries and why. The extent to which policy-making has been able to produce benefits for the population, regardless of the degree of democratic development, is then addressed. Finally, the book evaluates whether lessons can be learnt from Asia's experiences with democracy for other areas of the world.

Concluding that sound governance mechanisms, in particular the rule of law, - is the key to effective democratic systems, this book will strongly appeal to those with an interest in democracy, comparative politics, political economy and Asian studies and will be a timely reference or text in courses related to these areas. ...
