5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Manual
What can a psychology major say about the lab manual's content? Nothing life changing here, except...if it's what your professor requires, you'll buy it. If this is just for your edification and enrichment, you can rest assured that you will learn much of what's in the accompanying textbook without buying the textbook!

The lab manual includes some really good explainations about each topic so that you don't have to refer back to the textbook in order to answer the questions in the manual-a nice time saver! Some lab manuals have you defining key words as part of the exercises. You won't find that in this one! Phew! That saved me some time, too! Yes, time is a commodity for me! Well, would you just look at the time? Gotta finish tonight's lab...Exercise 15: The Heart. Dissecting the Sheep's Heart was a little over the top, but well written in this lab manual! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent, But Far From Ideal
I have most of the introductory cancer biology books currently on the market, and this book by King and Robins is among the better ones, though it's far from ideal. To start with the positive, the main strengths of this book are as follows:

1. The book isn't overly long, so you can read it cover to cover in a reasonable amount of time.

2. The writing is fairly clear and concise.

3. The summaries of key points at the beginning of each chapter are helpful for both preview and review.

My main complaint about this book, which applies to other similar books and the cancer research establishment in general, is that there's too much emphasis on details of molecular biology (which have yet to demonstrate meaningful clinical benefit), at the expense of a more balanced and comprehensive approach to cancer biology which pays more attention to topics such as angiogenesis, characteristics of established tumor vasculature, hypoxia, drug penetration into tumors, mechanics of invasion, tumor cell metabolism (particularly aerobic glycolysis), quantitative tumor growth modeling, intratumoral and intertumoral heterogeneity, mechanisms of treatment resistance, tumor evolution, tumor robustness, tumor complexity, tumor stem cells, interactions between tumor cells and the microenvironment, etc.To be clear, the book does touch on most of these topics, but it doesn't spend nearly enough time on them, whereas much of the discussion of molecular biology is excessively detailed, to the point of being harder to read than the typical cancer journal paper (of which I've read hundreds).

Since I don't know of other introductory cancer biology books which are substantially better than this one, I've rated this book 4 stars and I suppose I can recommend it to people looking for such a book. However, I have to reiterate that I'm not really satisfied with this book and will continue to look for something closer to an ideal book on this topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive textbook.
This textbook for biology students offers a sound, thorough explanation of cancer processes, research, and molecular details.Great for those wanting to supplement their biology knowledge or for use as a classroom reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for math majors; perhaps annoying to graphics experts
As the preface says, this book approaches the subject from two different directions: analytic and synthetic. The synthetic approach seems to contain both (1) the parts of the subject best suited to students who know only high-school math, and (2) the parts ill-suited to those who are not "pure" mathematicians. An example of the former is a high-school-geometry-style proof that any three points on any line may be transformed to any three points on any other line via a composition of two perspectivities. An example of the latter is the projective plane that is freely generated by a configuration. The inclusion of things like this latter example is the reason why the word "foundations" is in the title; "foundations" does not mean that which should be learned before everything else; perhaps "foundations" should be defined as "that which will annoy those who want to apply projective geometry to computer graphics and which will delight `pure' mathematicians who want to know how the subject interacts with abstract algebra." The latter group will like this book and will find it very readable.

This book is short and omits some topics found in many books. Conics and polarities are not dealt with. ... Read more

graduate school. I found this in the used book section at the college book store.
The treatment, diagrams and textdo what a lot of "dumb downed" current books

This book shows you things like Zeeman splitting in an understandable way.
From aufbau of electrons to florescence this book delvers the goods in an economic readable way.

Product Description
This book describes and evaluates alternative approaches within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to representing the structure of language at the level of form. It assumes no prior knowledge of SFL, and can therefore be read as an introduction to current issues within the theory. It will interest any linguist who takes a functional approach to understanding language. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Polite Disagreement with the Father Figure
The Systemic Functional approach in linguistics has a brilliant leader in M.A.K. Halliday who set the philosophy and practically all the basic parameters for this approach. This book is a defense of Fawcett's disagreement with some of Halliday parameters. The justifications are well done and seem quite reasonable. This is not a disgreement with the basic philosphy of the school itslef but just with some of its parameters.

This book is definitely required reading if you believe in the usefulness of the Systemic Functional approach (as I do). Fawcett's follow-on books will also be required reading, if only to disagree.

I would give this book 5 stars except for the editing. You would think that the publisher could afford to hire even a lowly paid English teacher just to check the spelling and punctuation for this very expensive [overpriced] book. The constant errors are a major distraction when you are trying to follow the author's logic. The lack of quality is enough to make one fear buying Fawcett's follow book. ... Read more

Product Description
This text is designed for a one-semester undergraduate course in projective geometry. In incorporates a synthetic approach starting with axioms from which the general theory is deduced, together with an analytic approach using the real projective plane as a model. The first is refined as the second is generalized until the two coincide via the introduction of coordinates in an abstract projective plane. Special attention is paid to the role of Desargues' and Pappus' axioms in the theory. At the end of the book is a list of problems that can be used as exercises while reading. The emphasis on the various groups of transformations that arise in projective geometry introduces the reader to group theory in a practical context. While the book does not assume any previous knowledge of abstract algebra, some familiarity with group theory would be useful. First published in 1967 and long out of print, this book is now reissued with a new preface, an appendix on the simple group of order 168, which appears as the group of automorphisms of a projective plane of seven points, and a list of errata. ... For upper-level undergraduate courses in herpetology, found in departments of Biology, Zoology, Natural Resources, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. Collaboration by the six authors--whose research specializations include autecology, synecology, systematics, evolution, morphology, physiology, and behavior--emphasizes the integration of information from different biological specialties to produce a comprehensive picture of amphibians and their important roles in modern ecosystems. This book presents the biology of amphibians and reptiles as the product of phylogenetic history and environmental influences acting in both ecological and evolutionary time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book offers a complete review on herpetology.
It has great pictures and detailed information on the subject.
Recommended for grads and undergrad students, and for anyone interested.
Simple terms, well explained.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair Overall
Probably the biggest problem with the text is the lack of a glossary, which really makes the first few chapters far more difficult than they need be. The phylogeny chapters get weighted down by taxonomical terms that are not properly introduced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent conceptually
It's certainly not complete or perfect, and as a reviewer notes, contains some omissions and errors. However, while a textbook should strive to be as good as possible in those areas, it's no substitute for the primary literature in peer-reviewed journals and shouldn't be viewed as such, and instead should be seen as more of a conceptual introduction, in which I feel it does well.It avoids the tempting parade-of-taxa style, and instead focuses on the important concepts uniting reptiles and to an extent all animals, such as osmoregulation, feeding, locomotion, reproductive strategies, etc.

The section dealing with my primary focus, locomotion, is rather sparse, and contains some outdated information, but nothing that can't be corrected with a quick read through the literature. With any luck, my own work will be in the next edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anurans and Squamates and Crocodylia! Oh, my!
This is easily the best herpetology text book out there. It is informative, yet not full of the boringness (if that's a word...) of many textbooks. You might say that it's...fun to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Herp Textbook
I have just finished an undergradute course which used this book as the main text.I agree with the previous reviewer that there is considerable overlap and occasional contradiction. The early chapters tend to use a lot of technical jargon, and seem to be written for people who alreadyunderstand the material.I was not so impressed with phylogenicdescriptions which frequently failed to discuss unifying characteristicswithin families.Later sections, including locomotion, water balance, andmate selection are well written. This book would benefit from a glossary, more relevant tables and figures, and a more inclusive index.Overall, editing is rather sketchy. ...
