AD 90 c. 168), known in English as Ptolemy (pronounced ), was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer and a poet of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology. He lived in Egypt under Roman rule, and is believed to have been born in the town of Ptolemais Hermiou in the Thebaid. He died in Alexandria around AD 168. Ptolemy was the author of several scientific treatises, at least three of which were of continuing importance to later Islamic and European science. The first is the astronomical treatise now known as the Almagest (in Greek, , "The Great Treatise", originally , "Mathematical Treatise"). The second is the Geography, which is a thorough discussion of the geographic knowledge of the Greco-Roman world. The third is the astrological treatise known sometimes in Greek as the Apotelesmatika (), more commonly in Greek as the Tetrabiblos ( "Four books"), and in Latin as the Quadripartitum (or four books) in which he attempted to adapt horoscopic astrology to the Aristotelian natural philosophy of his day. The name Claudius is a Roman nomen; the fact that Ptolemy bore it proves that he was a Roman citizen. It would have suited custom if the first of Ptolemy's family who became a citizen (whether it was he or an ancestor) took the nomen from a Roman called Claudius, who was in some sense responsible for granting citizenship. If, as was not uncommon, this Roman was the emperor, the citizenship would have been granted between AD 41 and 68 (when Claudius, and then Nero, were emperor...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23979 ... Product Description
The city of Memphis on the Nile, which had often served as capital in the long period preceding Egypt's conquest by Alexander the Great, became the country's "second city" following the founding of Alexandria. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence, Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists, papyrologists, and historians of the Hellenistic world, including those concerned with religion.

The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull, deified as Osorapis, became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure, the Sarapieion, is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures. ... Read more

Product Description
The study of bronzes from Greco-Roman Egypt offers a wide spectrum of possibilities for researchers in Classical Archaeology and Egyptology alike, but the complexity of many interdisciplinary topics can only be well-served through specialized investigations of limited scope. The bronze portrait sculptures of Ptolemy II offer an ideal point of departure for such an investigation, since it was during that king's rule that court artists consciously created art forms that fused the style, subject matter and iconography of the artistic heritage of their native subjects with their own Greek traditions. In a time of relative peace, now able to reap the material rewards of the Oriental conquests of Alexander's army, the new Ptolemaic regime fused Greco-Macedonian social and political structures into the established, ancient native infrastructure and guided it to a thriving, productive society. ... Product Description
Virtually all survey-accounts of ancient science leave the mistaken impression that ancient ray-theory shared the same basic aims and methods as its modern counterpart and, therefore, that the two are genetically linked. The source of confusion lies in the fact that, for the sake of simplicity and brevity, textbook authors emphasize those aspects of Greek ray-analysis that seem most innovative and forward-thinking. Viewed in this way, Greek ray-theory looks very much like its modern countrpart. In reality, ancient and modern ray-theory are worlds apart in conceptual and methodological foundations, and the same holds true for their fundamental aims. The history of ancient optics has undergone a fundamental reappraisal in regard to both the basic sources and their interpretive context. Using actual sources as a foundation, Mark Smith shows how ancient mathematical optics developed in response not only to certain theoretical imperatives but also to empirical evidence, and opens a path for readers to reach their own understanding. ...
