Product Description
The essays in this volume -- which grew out of a conference commemorating the Oregon Treaty of 1846 -- view the boundary between Canada and the United States as a dividing line and also as a regional backbone, with people on each side having key experiences and attitudes in common. In their eloquence and scope, they illustrate how historical study of Canadian-American relations in the West calls into question the parameters of the nation-state.

Essays consider both the nineteenth century, when the international border had limited power to restrict the movement of Native peoples, of financial capital, or of settlersí racist attitudes, and the strengthened boundary of the twentieth century, with its disputes over salmon runs, free trade, and World War II defense. Essays also explore the ways in which Canada and the United States have defined and preserved wilderness, the 1840s dispute over the Oregon Country, and U.S. attitudes that have provoked anti-Americanism in Canada.

The U.S.--Canadian border has meant different things to different people, and those meanings have changed over time, but the situation today is the evolution of cross-border integration that took place in the past, and each side of this borderlands region remains, in part, the creation of the other. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Text on Judaism
Schurer is the classic text on Judaism. It was required reading in my doctoral program on the NT, and I will consult it for years to come.Though it is quite costly, and a bit dated, it is still considered a standard reference. It is actually apart of a 4-voume series which was translated into English from German and updated by a group of highly credible scholars. ... Product Description
Although we often think of fables as intended for the enlightenment and entertainment of children, here is one that adults will want to read. Mary Fahy has written a tale aimed at persons who find themselves in a period of transition, or who are experiencing loss or new birth in their lives.

She tells the story of a tree that awakens one spring morning to discover that she has survived the winter, but with many changes in her being and appearance. Overcoming feelings of anger, fear and abandonment, the tree comes to appreciate the abundance she has been given and finds ways to share this mystery with others. Finally, the tree understands the mystery of love and fidelity.

In the tradition of Hope for the Flowers, this beautifully illustrated, sensitively written book has become a classic in its own right. Readers will recognize their own story in it--a story of affirmation, indomitable spirit and love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I love this type of book!It is almost an allegory, but not really. It is written like a children's story, kind of like a picture book, but has a deeper meaning. I put it in the same category as 'The Wall' and 'Hope for the Flowers.'One page that I often remember from this book is the one where the sun tells the tree that he needed the winter so that he would be strong. And when the tree blames the sun for not being there when he needed the warmth from the sun, and the sun says that he was there all the time and sometimes his light was about more than the tree could take - it reflected so brightly off the snow.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tree That Survived the Winter
This is a book sent to me by a friend after I had some very trying and sad times. It meant so much to me, that I have given it to friends who have had traumatic times. They all have enjoyed the message Mary Fahy presents in the book.It has been a blessing for me to read and share.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tree That Survived the Winter
Inspirational.I gave it to friends who had suffered hardships of various kinds and they found it helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to thaw the heart and soul!
Mary Fahy's book "The Tree That Survived The Winter" is quite simply amazing and wonderful at the same time. Here in the allegorical story of a tree one can find strength and courage to face personal tragedy and loss.In the process, a person will grow and learn to find happiness and joy in their own world. The happiness and joy that come from living, loving and growing as a person and taking pleasure in the everything around them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tree that Survived the Winter
This is one of the best books you can find for dealing with grieving for a loss. It is especially well suited for someone mourning a death, but it will also have meaning for those coping with divorce or any other of life's losses. It can be read in one sitting and is a perfect blend of text and illustration. ... Read more

Product Description
Between the Devil and Deep Blue Sea is the first volume of a trilogy entitled The Journey. This volume deals with a boy's perception of life and the drama evolving around him. Although born in Germany shortly before Hitler's rise to power, he immigrates with his family to Poland as a small child. He is then trapped in Poland by the Nazi invasion in 1939. After surviving the siege of Lwow that ultimately falls to the Soviet rule, he ends up, at the age of twelve, in a Soviet Gulag. As seen through the critical eye of a thirteen-year-old boy, the story describes the Nazi attack on Poland, the occupation of Lwow by the Soviets, his transport through Russia in cattle cars and barges, his arrival at the Soviet Gulag, and his journey after liberation. From the labor camp, he treks through the Volga River, Caspian Sea, and the deserts of central Asia to Alma Ata. The adventures in Alma Ata include two close brushes with death, once from starvation and once as a result of a knife attack. These years are shadowed by his own self-exploration and awakening as a maturing teenager. The conditions in wartime Alma Ata, the drive for acquiring education and the longing to find a way back to Europe are discussed in depth. Upon return to Europe, specifically to Poland he finds death and destruction left by the Germans as well as hostility of the native non Jewish population. He and his family cross the borders to the west illegally and ultimately end up in a D.P. (Displaced Persons) camp in Germany. There he is able to gain admission to a medical school where he studies while waiting for a visa to the USA. The volume ends with his arrival in Manhattan. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars between the devil and deep blue sea
Wonder what it was like to be a child and caught between the German and Russian war machines during World War II?How did you eat?Where did you live? How did you pay for anything? This blow by blow account of just such a journey will keep you turning pages until he lands in the USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Between the devil and deep blue sea
Most books set during the holocaust are, understandably, very sad and depressing. This one, however, is a totally fresh perspective because to a young boy, much of what happened on his journey from his home in Poland to a Russian gulag was an adventure. It is a very interesting story that is well told - a fast read!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Jesish Boy's Story of Survival and Courage During World War II
Emil Steinberger has crafted an interesting and gripping account of how he and his family of Polish Jews survived and overcame great adversity after the Nazi invasion of Poland. The story is from the point of view of a young boy coming of age during the cataclismic events of World War II.The story recounts how the Steinberger clan fled Poland and went to the east, and then how they survived in a brutal Russian sytem that had them in a goulag and then trasported to the eastern Caucasus. After the war, the family returned to Germany and became embroiled in the difficult post-war recovery. The story also includes Steinberger's interesting perspectives on the events leading to the formation of the State of Israel.Steinberger interweaves these dramatic events with his coming of age and his growing love for Ania. This story ends with his emigration to the United States where he subsequently embarked on a medical education and a career in academic medicine.I look forward to his next book which will focus on this stage of his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Journey
This book is an amazing first hand recollection of life during world war II.The author eloquently buckles you into the front seat of a moving adventure and international journey.I came away with a real taste of what life was like during this period. This book is a bitter sweet adventure and love story all wrapped up into a biography.Very well done. ... Product Description
An Old Man returns to the farm, in Michigan's upper thumb, where he lived as a boy forty-five years earlier. The desire for rest and relaxation is only a pretense. His real purpose is to make peace with some troubling memories. He finds the farm and much of the countryside reclaimed by wilderness, the nearby town a mere relic of the past, and the two room school replaced by a regional education complex. He is unprepared for the changes, and reminisces about the community as he remembers it.

The story of The Old Man's Return ends and The Boy's Story begins on the back porch of the farmhouse. Memories of his boyhood merge with reality as the Old Man's mind rambles from kissing girls in the snow on Spencer's hill, to getting caught cheating on a spelling test, from being swatted in the face by a wet cow's tail, to the delicious coolness of the swimmin' hole. The "Old Man" and the "Boy" are the same person separated only by time, and time surrenders its grip into the flood of memories that overwhelms the Old Man. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insider Reading
It's a shame that the public has an insatiable appetite for trashy thrillers by Dan Brown, James Patterson, and their imitators, but the late Paul Erdman never got the recognition that he deserved. But then, "thriller" is not an apt description for this book, because it's far more sophisticated and artful, with no gore, profanity or comic-book violence. I'd instead label it a novel of suspense, and Erdman's ability as a writer outweighs a whole herd of Scott Turows, Patricia Cornwells and John Grishams.

Read "The Set-Up," his last novel, and you'll see what I mean. The book is far more realistic and employs less gimmickry than most such novels, and its accuracy is due to the fact that Erdman had a long career in finance, and he was once actually the president of a Swiss bank - the Salik Bank.Unfortunately, what the dust jacket does not tell you is that Erdman was convicted of banking fraud and imprisoned in the jail he describes in detail in this novel. How many other novelists have that type of experience that they can write about?

This enables some highly accurate detail, but it also gives Erdman an ax to grind, and the Swiss are not portrayed in a very flattering light. There are also some obvious examples of "writer's embellishment"when it tangentially connects the story with some famous financial fraud cases of the 1980s and '90s: Robert Vesco (who attended my high school), Robert Maxwell, and Michele "The Shark" Sindona, none of whom escaped as the book suggests, and it announces the death of Fidel Castro and subsequent riots in Cuba. It is a work of fiction.

Don't let the fact that this book was written in 1997 dissuade you from reading it, as greed continues unabated to this day and nothing has changed. One wishes that Erdman had been born later or lived longer, so that he could've commented on the present banking disaster. For those of you who find finance an esoteric topic, Erdman adequately explains trading futures by providing numerous examples in the story.

I doubt if anyone would classify this as literature, but it really is intelligent and informative entertainment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Financial Thriller.....
This is the first novel I've read by Paul Erdman it is proved to be a very enjoyable experience. He truly does know how to weave a compelling tale of financial intrigue. The only thing that prevented me from giving the book 5 stars was the latter part of the story.80% of the novel is spent explaining the financial shenanigans of the culprits, and how they came to do what they did, but the novel seems to wrap up everything a little too quickly at the end.I would have liked to have seem additional pages devoted to the reaction of the culprits when they saw their carefully laid plans slowly falling apart, and how their families, mistresses, the police, and the prosecutor reacted to these developments.I mean....imagine the enormous international implications that would come with the uncovering of a conspiracy to frame the former head of the Federal Reserve for insider trading!

I found it very refreshing to see a hero and heroine who were "mature" and have a little bit of age and experience on them. And it was their wisdom, experience, and network of contacts that come with age that enabled them to outwit their opponents. It was also interesting that the main villain of the book reveals very little about himself, and we as the reader never find out that much more about him than do the book's main characters. He stayed "mysterious" up to the end!In a way, he reminded me of a villain straight out of a James Bond film...extremely wealthy, great strategist, very commanding, but polite and gentlemanly; never raising his voice, even if he intends on killing you! Another fascinating aspect of the book was the author showing how greed, boredom, temptation, and lust (mixed with a little bit of fear!) motivated two already professionally successful men to engage in financial mischief, and as a result, got themselves involved in something way over their heads. The Set-Up is an excellent financial thriller and I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, Fast Paced Grabs Your Attention
I enjoyed the many twist and turns that take you all over the world. This volume really requires the reader to pay attention. So many subplots could easily sidetrack you and make the book difficult to follow.I enjoy reading fiction that is not so transparent and predictable. The Setup took me for a loop once or twice, I'll admit it.Overall the book is a fun, fast paced read that wakes you up and makes you wonder if some of these events could actually happen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Erdman at His Best
If you like financial thrillers, you can't go wrong with Erdman, and he's at his best here.Usually the loose ends of "thrillers" bother me for years after I've read them; years after I've read this one I still admire the neat way he ties everything up nicely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best financial thriller writer out there
I'm still on my quest for a Grisham-like financial thriller, and Erdman is the best I've read in that genre so far, though it's not quite Grisham.I've read several other authors in this genre including Stephen Frey, Michael Ridpath, among others, and Erdman is the best of the group.I just wish he had more fiction work out there.I found this book to be a fast-paced, easy read that I completed in 2 days.I'd highly recommend it.

P.S.I'd also recommend checking out Erdman's book Zero Coupon; it dates back to the 1970's, but it's still among the best out there. ... Read more
