Product Description

Victorian Medicine and Social Reform traces Florence Nightingale’s career as a reformer and Crimean war heroine. Her fame as a social activist and her writings including Notes on Nursing and Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army influenced novelists such as Wilkie Collins, Elizabeth Gaskell, and George Eliot. Their novels of social realism, in turn, influenced Nightingale's later essays on poverty and Indian famine. This study draws original conclusions on the relationship between Nightingale’s work and its historical context, gender politics, and such twenty-first-century analogues as celebrity activists Angelina Jolie, Al Gore, and Nicole Kidman.

With 48 Photos from the Stageplay

A Play with the Power of a Novel

Crimea, 1854: Having botched the Charge of the Light Brigade, Lord Cardigan is hiding on his yacht, drinking himself into stupor. On the shore, at the hospital corps, a mutiny is brewing. Egotistic doctors, brutish surgeons and skittish nurses wage mind wars against each other amidst filth and chaos.

Florence Nightingale, the legendary "Lady with a Lamp" - a saint to her patients and a frigid spinster to her colleagues - finds solace in the company of Tom Grant, a haggard physician with a sinister reputation. Trading grim jokes and scientific facts, the two develop a cerebral romance that promises to mark a new era for English medicine. Inevitably, Tom's semi-criminal past surfaces, throwing him in the political crossfire between Lords Cardigan and Lucan.

Following on Marina Julia Neary's supurb novel, Wynfield's Kingdom, this is a play that is as much of a delight to read as it is to see on stage.

"With veracious historic grit and not-ever so proper Victorian perspective, Lady with a Lamp depicts Florence Nightingale's Crimean War experiences through the eyes of the small-minded and blood-guilty characters surrounding her."Diane L. LaSalaDirector of Lady with a Lamp

5-0 out of 5 stars A lamp that sheds light into the unsounded heart of a great woman
"Lady With A Lamp" is an imaginative take on the unknown or obscure aspects of the life of one of most beloved figures of the 19th century: Florence Nightingale.
Set against the blood-spattered background of the Crimean War, throbbing with the reek of chloroform, woven around the poignant relationship between Florence Nightingale & Tom Grant, a doctor of the British Army, "Lady With A Lamp" integrates a scathing tale of love, longing & loneliness, with one of themost infamous & colossal failures of recent military history: the Charge of the Light Brigade.
Marina Julia Neary draws aside the curtains of saintliness & altruism hung around the great historical figure of Nightingale, & unveils the WOMAN beneath the NURSE, the HUMAN BEING beneath the SAINT, the COMPLEXITY beneath the CLICHE.
In other words, "Lady..." is a work of profound compassion & earthiness: a work which refuses to deny fallibility to greatness, imperfection to sublimity, humanity to heroism.
And yet, it pays tribute to that fallibility, and raises the question: is THIS fallibility, fallibility at all?
The orthodox conception of greatness, of virtue, & commitment to justice itself, are implicitly called into question -- and viewed from a different, more gritty perspective.

Neary's impressive talent as a writer consists in rendering the TENDER without being SENTIMENTAL, the TRAGIC without being MUSHY, and the PAINFUL without being PATHETIC.
While most modern writers' efforts NOT to be melodramatic are excruciatingly evident, Neary accomplishes her task of rendering blind adoration, vindictive anger, sniveling swinishness, & profound pain -- without melodrama -- EFFORTLESSLY.
This is what impresses the reader with the sheer REALITY of the whole narrative, and is testament to the immense talent of this wonderful author.

After reading this play, Florence Nightingale emerges as more than a cardboard stock-figure of a self-sacrificing social worker: she's a woman who has to face life-&-death choices WITHIN HER OWN CONSCIENCE; who must act against CONVENTIONAL morality; & must take upon herself a burden which few would associate with the stereotypical "humanitarian".
One of my favorite characters, I must add, was that of Rebecca Prior: the consummate bimbo, or as they'd put it in archaic idiom: the consummate WENCH -- who knows precisely what choice & what action will bring her the best advantage, & when: and who proves, after all, that bimboes are NOT DUMB!

5 stars any day!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Play, Great Book
I had the pleasure recently to view a live on stage production of "Lady With a Lamp."The acting was superb, especially Marina's husband Walt who played Lucan.A must read for anyone interested in the Crimean War.From the start the reader will be amused by the sardonic back and forth between Florance and Grant, Horrified by the inhumanity of Lucan and Bennentt, and tickled by the antics of Rebecca and Cardigan.

Product Description
'She was emotional, she was vain, she was incomparable. She was a passionate cultivator of new ideas on the compost-heap of long rotted ones. She had a genius for rubbing noses into facts right in front of them. She had infinite capability and little tenderness. Her antiseptic ghost today haunts every sickbed in the world, to which she was Britain's most valuable and useful gift.'

This harsh and gritty story of Florence Nightingale does little to perpetuate the myth of the gentle lady of the lamp. Instead, through the eyes of his impassioned narrator, Richard Gordon lays bare the truth of this complex and chilling character. ... Read more
