Product Description
David (D. M.) Armstrong is one of Australia's greatest philosophers. His chief philosophical achievement has been the development of a core metaphysical programme, embracing the topics of universals, laws, modality and facts: a naturalistic metaphysics, consistent with a scientific view of the natural world. It is primarily through his owrk that Australian philosophy, and Australian metaphysics in particular, enjoys such a high reputation in the rest of the world. In this book Stephen Mumford offers an introduction to the full range of Armstrong's thought. Mumford begins with a discussion of Armstong's naturalism, his most general commitment, and his realism about universals. He then examines his theories of laws, modality and dispositions, which make up the basics of Armstrong's core theory. With this in place, Mumford explores his ideas on perception, mind and belief before returning to metaphysics in the last two chapters, looking at truth and the new view of instantiation. The book is a dispassionate, fair and unbiased account of Armstrong's thought.Although Armstong's is a body of work that Mumford regards highly and of real significance, he nevertheless highlights areas of weakness and issues about which there is room for further debate. ... Excerpt: David Owen Dodd (November 10, 1846 January 8, 1864) was an American 17 year-old who was tried, convicted and hanged as a Confederate spy in the American Civil War. In December 1863, Dodd carried some letters to business associates of his father in Union-held Little Rock, Arkansas. While traveling home to Confederate-held Camden, Arkansas, he mistakenly re-entered Union territory. Found to be without a pass, Union soldiers questioned him and discovered that he was carrying a notebook with the locations of Union troops in the area. He was arrested and tried by a military tribunal, with little defense offered for his actions. The tribunal found him guilty of spying and he was hanged for his crime in January 1864. Though Dodd did not reveal the source of the information, a 15-year old girl named Mary Dodge and her father were summarily escorted back to their home in Vermont. These events have led to David Owen Dodd being called the "Boy Martyr of the Confederacy". David Owen Dodd was born in Victoria, Lavaca County, Texas, to Andrew Marion Dodd, a merchant, and Lydia Echols Owen. His Baptist parents had married in a village south of Little Rock, Arkansas and moved to Texas where David and his sisters, Leonora and Senhora, were born. David's sister Leonora died before the Civil War. In 1856, the family returned to Arkansas and settled near Benton. In 1861, the Dodds moved to Little Rock to be closer to Senhora, who attended school in the city and lived with her aunt, Mrs. Susan A. Dodd. David Dodd went to classes at St. John's Masonic College. Dodd and his father moved to M...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15904158 ... Read more

Product Description

The Climatron® is perhaps the most iconic and famed building at the Missouri Botanical Garden, noted as the first geodesic dome to be used as a greenhouse when constructed in 1960. To mark the monument's 50th anniversary in 2010, the Garden is releasing a new full-color souvenir book, Missouri Botanical Garden Climatron: A Celebration of 50 Years. The 108 page paperback contains over a dozen three-dimensional images by noted 3 D photographer David E. Klutho, along with rarely-before-seen archival images and contemporary photography.

The Climatron was named one of the 100 most significant architectural achievements in U.S. history by the U.S. Bicentennial Commission of Architects. The free-standing structure, designed by St. Louis architects Murphy and Mackey, incorporates the principles of R. Buckminster Fuller, who patented the geodesic dome design. The Climatron rises 70 feet in the center with no interior support, allowing generous light and space for the 24,000 square feet (more than half an acre) of tropical rain forest plants within an increasing number of which are endangered in the wild.

The experience of setting foot in the conservatory is one of immersion, sensory abandon, submission to an almost primeval overload of plants, smells, and humidity...a fantasy of what nature might have once been, a sensual engulfment... said Robert Riley, Harvard Design Magazine, upon visiting the Climatron. More than 2,800 plants grow inside the conservatory, where temperatures range from 64-degrees Fahrenheit at night to a high of 85-degrees during the day. The term Climatron, from the Greek words for climate and machine, was coined to emphasize the climate-control technology of the greenhouse dome.

Missouri Botanical Garden Climatron: A Celebration of 50 Years includes a foreword by Dr. Peter H. Raven, Garden president, and is authored by Eric Mumford, Washington University School of Architecture professor. Elizabeth McNulty, St. Louis Then and Now author, is a contributing writer. Archival photos convey the story of the plans, people, art, architecture and engineering that went into the iconic structure, while contemporary pictures provide a glimpse of the Climatron as enjoyed today. A special section of three-dimensional images brings the conservatory to life when viewed through the 3-D glasses included in each book.

The Climatron is not only one of the most famous icons in St. Louis, but among the most important architectural achievements in America, said Eric Mumford, author. It is a gem of mid century modern design".

This book will appeal to everyone, from armchair historians and supporters of the Missouri Botanical Garden, to architecture buffs and photography fans. Kids of all ages will love the 3-D photography section. ... Read more
