Product Description
An anniversary is a reason to celebrate, and when on September 21st 2006, Belize commemorated its first 25 years as a new nation, Belizeans indeed rejoiced. In this collection, the first of two volumes, distinguished economists, conservationists, lawyers, sociologists, and other scholars all longtime observers of Belize and its people take stock. In most cases they present, for the first time ever, essays that focus on Belize, a country that is at once deceptively uncomplicated yet surprisingly complex. The essays, which reflect on what brought Belize to this point, are eminently readable, but provocative and challenging. The authors' in-dept analysis and evaluation of data, policies, laws, and practices from the economic, environmental, societal, and cultural sectors are just the beginning. Policy-makers, decision-makers, stake holders, and concerned citizens are beckoned to use the essays to assess and evaluate the authors' findings, appraise the current status of the country, and examine its proposals, initiatives, challenges, and promises, mindful of what has transpired and what the country and its people will face in the next quarter century. The essays are a bid for independence - independent thinking, analysis, and evaluation. All who know and study Belize will value this fourth contribution to The Belize Collection. ... Read more

Product Description
Cyclist Robert Millar came from one of Europe’s most industrialised cities, Glasgow, to excel in the most unlikely terrain – over the high mountain passes of the Pyrenees and the Alps. He was crowned King of the Mountains during the 1984 Tour de France and remains the only ever Briton to finish on the podium of the world’s toughest race.In attitude and appearance he was unconventional – the malnourished-looking young Scot with the tiny stud in his ear who could be prickly, irascible and unapproachable – but to many followers he was the epitome of cool. Flying the flag for British cycling, this one-off original became a cult hero.In Search of Robert Millar will follow the career of this other-worldly character, from his tough childhood on the streets of Glasgow in the 1960s to his move to France and success in the world’s most brutal and unforgiving races, including the controversy surrounding his positive drugs test and his enforced retirement from the sport at the age of 36.It examines what set Millar apart from all other British cyclists who tried, and failed, to make an impact in this most European of sports, describing his single-mindedness, his eccentricity and the humour and intelligence that emerged only towards the end of his career. It also proffers explanations for his subsequent disappearance, which repeated a familiar pattern: he vanished from Glasgow and never returned; he left his wife and son and his adopted country, France. Now, it appears, he has turned his back on cycling (amid rumours that he had undergone a sex-change operation).Through interviews with Millar’s friends, acquaintances, cycling colleagues and ex-classmates, author Richard Moore helps to unravel the mystery of this maverick Scotsman, arguably one of the greatest enigmas in a sport full of remarkable characters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As the back cover quote says, "Meticulously reserached and lovingly constructed"
I found this book fascinating and compelling. I could hardly put it down and devoured it cover to cover. I remember Millar as a boyhood hero of mine. He came to prominence just as the Tour De France began to be televised on British TV. However, I never understood his meticulous attention to detail, particularly his diet and his health. He planned every step up in his career with a very scientific approach and he was so incredibly honest and forthright about his own ability and chances. Millar seems like a visionary now. His insights on toxins and food additives are seen as mainstream now while back in the 80s they made him a freak.

The book provides fascinating insights into many other characters of the cycling scene in the 80s and 90s including Paul Sherwen, Stephen Roche, Sean Yates, Martin Earley, Sean Kelly, Pedro Delgado, Allan Peiper, Graeme Obree, Chris Boardman, even a young Lance Armstrong gets a mention. It also paints quite a horrid picture of the politics of pro cycling and life for riders on the teams back in the 80s. It's amazing to learn how ineffective the management was and to read of truly horrific lack of leadership and the resultant squandered talent.

Millar remains the best ever British pro and the only English speaking rider to win the King of the Mountains in the Tour de France. This book is a fitting tribute to a heavily misunderstood personality whose achievements are only truly being appreciated two decades later. I see Robert Millar in a new light and I'd like to thank Richard Moore for making this possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
If you are into cycling history this will be a book for you. Millar is enigmatic and its hard to really paint a good picture of the guy, but Moore does as well as anyone could expect. In some ways it's a shame Millar didn't agree to really open up to him at the end. The book steadily built toward that, but the resolution never came. I guess the more predictable ending wouldn't have fit this subject anyway. Somehow getting some limited email contact and then an abrupt ending seems perfect in that sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars In Search of Robert Millar
A book for a bicycle gear head. An interesting approach to the enigmatic Robert Millar. Mr Moore not only does a respectable job detailing Robert Millar's life but he covers the professional cycling scene from the mid 70s to late 80s and the rise of doping in the peleton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and intriguing
Not even interested in the sport till a year back and only mildly interested in the name of Robert Millar, there was something in the title that made me feel this book would be an interesting read. IN SEARCH OF Robert Millar- a most appropriate title. It is the theme of this book - his Scottish past, his parents, school, friends, his early days in France, his mentors and how each of the races shaped him. Any other book of an insignificant pedal pusher from Glasgow would have bored me to death but the author has somehow pulled it off well - from cover to cover. By the end of the book, I was a bit surprised that I actually liked it a lot. I think what really shows in the book is the author's sincere effort to find all he could of this mysterious personality and to present it in a way a mystery novel would. At the end, I was more in appreciation of the author than Robert Millar; Robert Millar - I pitied.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
I found this book suprisingly interesting. I had only had vague recollections of Millar from his cycling days in the 80's and 90's. Racing along side LeMond and Hinault when the TDF first came on the radar of American cyclist. The book is very well written and had me hooked from beginning to end. It can even serve as a prelude to the drug invested Peleton we see now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jung related to Zen & Vajrayana--a high quality gem
This is a terrific book.It has 3 parts: Jung's Commentaries on Tibetan Buddhist texts, his meeting with a Zen expert, & 9 articles by contemporary authors on Jung-Buddhist issues. It is bi-directional, addressing both Jung's contributions to Buddhism & vice versa. Some of the authors have published valuable books too-Radmila Moacanin, Nathan Katz, & Harold Coward.Jung said: p. 49: "Matter is an hypothesis. When you say `matter' you are really creating a symbol for something unknown, which may just as well be `spirit' or anything else; it may even be "God," p. 76: "close parallelism between the findings of Eastern & Western psychology," & p. 83: "The Bardo Thödol is in the highest degree psychological in its outlook."The book addresses mostly Zen & Vajrayana Buddhism & Jung, though there is a bit on Freud too.Nathan Katz says: p. 324: in "Dakini & Anima..."-"a paradigm for comparative religion-psychological study which neither reduces one perspective to another, nor sees the discourses of Buddhist & Jungian psychology as rigidly & artificially compartmentalized."This relates to virtually the entire book.As James Thomas states: p. 221: "The language of both Jung & Buddhism is a study in elaborate avoidance of metaphysics. The language of both strives to be purely empirical."

The book also addresses Jung-Buddhist differences: p. 183: Mokusen Miyuki in "Self-Realization in the 10 Oxherding Pictures," "The Eastern concept of `mind' is radically different from that in the West."Quoting Jung, "In the West, `mind' is more or less equated with consciousness, whereas in the East the word `mind' is closer to what the West refers to as the unconscious...Our study, employing Jung's concepts & methodology, has afforded us a psychological understanding of Zen satori (enlightenment) in terms of self-realization, or the urge of the Self to realize itself."And since the U.S. is considered ESTJ (Extroverted/Sensate/Thinker/Judgmental) & Tibet seems opposite in psychological type & Westerners go down into the unconscious (& Kabbalists go down to the Chariot) while Easterners rise up to their Buddha nature, Jung suggested Westerners read the Bardo Thödol backwards. Also, p. 163: Thomas Kasulis, says "The Zen Buddhist view of the person goes beyond the more restricted psychoanalytic categories of Freud & Jung."Interestingly, the Pu-ming oxherding pictures remind me of the Tibetan Path of Shamatha in Kalu Rinpoche's "Luminous Mind" or Dzogchen Ponlop's stages of resting in "Wild Awakening."But the largest difference is in the view of the final stage of enlightenment vs. individuation-Self-centered vs. ego-centered people-whether the Self can be "conscious" without the ego.IMHO this is a matter of conceptual definitions-& it reminds me of Casteneda's 2nd Attention with which Jung was unfamiliar.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Back Cover
"A remarkable and helpful collection of the dialogues begun by Jung and his followers with the great teachings of the East. These are visionary papers which raise profound questions about human wholeness inthe spiritual and psychological world.I hope that this book sparkscontinued and deepening discussions."

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Back Cover
"It is an urgent necessity that Eastern and Western intellectual traditions be bridged in order to establish a new spiritual foundation for the one world to come. This book is an excellent anthology which pursuesthis very task in its focus on C.G. Jung -- a unique and originativeWestern thinker in the field of depth psychology -- and Buddhism." ... Read more

Product Description
Robert Brown was one of the first professional botanists to visit Australia. He accompanied Flinders on his official circumnavigation of Australia in the ship Investigator, and later collected extensively in New South Wales and Tasmania. The result was published, in part in his Prodromus (1810), and in other shorter works, particularly on Proteaceae.

Brown came to be recognized as the leading British botanist of his day. His extensive herbarium, of which the main set is lodged in the British Natural History Museum, was also extensively consulted by other botanists, and is particularly rich in Australian type material.

While in Australia Brown also made zoological, mineralogical and anthropological collections. Many of these are now lodged in British institutions.

Brown’s Prodromus was published before Flinders’ account of the voyage, and Brown was therefore obliged to use his own manuscript names for localities visited (‘Bay I’ etc.). His specimen labels, too, were somewhat cryptic, containing only minimal information. This has presented later researchers with difficulties in properly localizing the Brown collections.

However, Brown kept a diary during the 5 years of his Australian visit, and this provides additional notes about many of his collections and of the localities visited. The diary is housed in the British Natural History Museum, largely inaccessible to scientists. It has now been transcribed by the late T.G. Vallance, E.W. Groves and D.T. Moore, and the entries extensively annotated and interpreted. Brown used many temporary nicknames for the plants he collected, and these are now tied to currently accepted names. Brown’s diary entries are cross referenced to and supplemented by those of his companions, Matthew Flinders and Peter Good, as well as letters to and from Brown’s patron, Joseph Banks, and others. Illustrations include maps of collecting sites, and paintings by the artist Ferdinand Bauer who accompanied Flinders and Brown on the Investigator voyage.

The book will be invaluable to botanists, zoologists, geologists and anthropologists, both for the background information supplied for the Brown collections, and for his incidental observations on the Australian landscape, its occupants and its biota at a time before extended European settlement. ... Product Description
This study of G. E. Moore’s work in moral philosophy draws upon a close examination of the early essays that preceded the writing of Principia Ethica in order to ground the author’s view that Moore’s famous "naturalistic fallacy argument" of Principia has been widely misunderstood. At the time of his death in 1986, Robert Peter Sylvester was in the process of preparing this book for publication. That process has been brought to completion by Ray Perkins, Jr., and R. W. Sleeper. Sylvester’s reappraisal of the moral philosophy of G. E. Moore argues that criticism of the work of this major twentieth-century British philosopher has been based on misinterpretation of his unified position. He treats Moore’s ideas about "What is Good?", "What things are Good?" and "What ought we to do?" as forming a coherent system.

To bring this work up to date since the author’s death, the editors have provided a bibliographic essay following each chapter in which recent scholarship is discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the most extensive account of Moore's fiction to date that considers his many works from the early stories to the recent novel, No Other Life. Moore, who was born in Ireland but is a Canadian citizen and resides predominantly in the United States, has earned an international reputation as an important novelist. This book sets out to demonstrate a discernible pattern of concerns that cut across Moore's fictive output over the last 40 years. It argues that the concerns of love and faith (and the interplay between them) form the backbone of Moore's oeuvre. Sullivan draws from interviews with Moore and presents a study that convincingly demonstrates how Moore's fictions, from first to last, take their place in a larger thematic and formal masternarrative. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read.
"Timeless Wonders" by Robert Moore surely lives up to its title. Contained in the book itself are descriptions of some of the most beautiful places to visit on our planet. These include, but are not limited to: the Victoria Falls, the Great Barrier Reef, the shores of Corsica, the beauty of Iceland, the fjords of Norway, the Swiss Alps, the inspiring English Lakes, Banff National Park, and many many more. The book spans the continents (Yes, even Antartica), capturing the ethereal beauty of these places through engrossing writing accompanied by stunning photography.

The Writing: The written aspect of this book is perfect. It provides an easy read, while being immensely descriptive about each location. There is not an overload of information in that the reader tires of it quickly. Moore gives enough information about each place - in some cases brisk, but it is always very detailed. It makes one feel as if each place is sacred in itself. In some cases even, he gives a detailed description of how or an accepted theory of how (if there are multiple theories), some of these spectacular landscapes were formed. All of this is extremely interesting to read about, along with the present day information of the Wonder he describes.

Photography: The photography is what will immediately arrest the reader's eye. Filling the entire book, are professional photos of each location that Moore writes about. The photos are vibrant and show off the true beauty of these places, almost making the reader feel as if he/she was right there in the picture, standing in front of the Wonder.

Overall, it is a wonderful and informative book. If you wanted to know more about the world's natural wonders, or were thinking of travelling to a particular spot, I would recommend giving this a read. The content will not disappoint. ... Read more

Product Description

Alabama football is a story of winners who have established a championship legacy, and Twelve and Counting tells that glorious story by focusing on each of the twelve times, so far, that The University of Alabama football team has won the national championship. Dating back to 1925, when Wallace Wade coached the Crimson Tide to an undefeated season and earned a spot in the Rose Bowl, the driving goal of every season has been that ultimate crown.

When Alabama defeated Washington 29—13 in the 1926 Rose Bowl, celebrations occurred throughout the South, and the Crimson Tide became known as “Dixie’s Football Pride.” At every whistle-stop from Texas through Louisiana and into Mississippi, fans of all ages crowded depots to get a glimpse of the Tidesmen who had brought prestige to southern football by defeating the West Coast power. With such now-legendary players as Johnny Mack Brown and Pooley Hubert among them, the team was mobbed in Tuscaloosa as they paraded from the railroad station to the Quad for a celebration never before experienced in the Deep South.

There would be many more crowning moments for the Crimson and White. A winning team surfaced the very next year, when Wu Winslett’s squad sealed the national championship at the Rose Bowl for a second time; then winning seasons and bowl games culminating in the coveted crown followed again in ‘30, ‘34, ‘41, ‘61, ‘64, ‘65, ‘73, ‘78, ‘79, and ‘92. Among the many outstanding coaches and players associated with these national championships are Frank Thomas, Dixie Howell, Don Hutson, Jimmy Nelson, Holt Rast, Pat Trammel, Sam Bailey, Lee Roy Jordan, Harry Gilmer, Bill Lee, Ken Stabler, Joe Willie Namath, Gary Rutledge, Randy Billingsley, Barry Krauss, Clem Gryska, Gene Stallings, and, of course, the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant.

But football is a team sport, and it is the story of the whole teams that came together with such dedication, hard work, and pride—and a common principle of competing at the highest level—that is detailed in the 12 main chapters of this book. A 13th chapter looks at the uncrowned teams listed in the media guide as the “other 5,” those Alabama teams considered national champions by at least one national ranking service.

It’s all here—“Mama called,” the wishbone formation, “The Goal Line Stand,” the Million Dollar Band, the coaching tower, the Davis kicking dynasty, the double-wing attack, Coach of the Year, Team of the Decade—those glorious milestones and high points in Alabama football history so savored by the whole Crimson Nation. Roll Tide!

4-0 out of 5 stars The "ONE" Book Every Alabama Football Fan Should Read
When the fall season arrives, and the college football team you follow is the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, you cannot help but wonder as you "suit-up" in your crimson "A" shirt and khaki pants for that first game, "Will this be the year we go all-the-way and win another national championship?"

With TWELVE AND COUNTING: THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OF ALABAMA FOOTBALL, the reader gets a summation of the accounts of each of the 12 championship seasons, and five others that most of the other schools, and their fans, discount, in an easy-to-read wonderful collection. Each season is discussed in the unique style of the author, and, for me, serves as primer in writing styles.

The 1925 Season was written by Andrew Doyle, associate professor of history at Winthrop University, and as a historian, he writes as much of the historical significance of this season as he does of games themselves, which is all right by me for I never did think Sewanee could "own" Alabama like they once did.

The 1926 Season was written by Taylor Watson, the curator of the Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa, and he tackles the subject of whether Alabama deserved to be champions with the energy that shows great promise as an author. His thoroughness in assessing the state of football throughout the nation and how Alabama stacked-up to all the other preseason favorites is essential to understanding just how monumental this second championship was.

In describing the 1930 season, writer Delbert Reed, a former sports editor of "The Tuscaloosa News" who wrote PAUL "BEAR" BRYANT: WHAT MADE HIM A WINNER, sets the tone of this chapter when he quotes Dr. George Denny telling Frank Thomas, the coach hired as Wallace Wade's replacement, "It is my conviction that material is 90 percent, coaching ability 10 percent...you will be provided with the 90 percent and that you will be held to strict accounting for delivering the remaining 10 percent."The previous four seasons had been disappointing with 5-4-1, 6-3 and 6-3 records under Wade, who had already given his notice that he was leaving Alabama for Duke after the 1930 season for Duke University.Coach Wade, however, wasn't going to go out with his head hung low, as evidence by the fact that for the 10 games played, Alabama scored 271 points and their opponents 13 points. A remarkable achievement, especially when you consider most "short-timers" tend to slack-off at their duties.

Mitch Dobbs, in discussing the 1934 season, recounts the pressures that Coach Thomas inherited when he took over the team after Coach Wade left following the 10-0 season in 1930.It is with this team that one reads of the exploits of Dixie Howell, Don Hutson, Bill Lee and Paul Bryant.

In writing about 1941 and Coach Frank Thomas' second championship, Wayne Atcheson tells of the mood of the country, as impending war loomed, and the mood of the University, as it suffered two losses, both shut-outs, to Mississippi State and Vandy, and the death by creeping paralysis of Dr. Richard Foster, University of Alabama President.

The first of the Bryant championships is written by renown writer Winston Groom, whose book CRIMSON TIDE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF FOOTBALL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA is, to me, the best of all books about the history of Alabama football. He describes in detail the "resurrection" that Coach Bryant delivered.Groom recounts Coach Bryant's first meeting with the team, a meeting that came even before Bryant coached his final game at A&M, "I don't know any of you, and I don't want to know you," he told them."I'll know who I want to know after spring training."Then, he turned and walked out.Groom sums up this meeting with these words, "Thus, a new sun rose upon the most exhilarating chapter so far in the history of Alabama football. The fans had expected a Moses to lead the Crimson Tide out of the wilderness. What they got instead was God."

If you have ever listen to an Alabama football game during the last 15 years or so, you have heard the smooth voice of Tom Roberts as he lends depth to the play-by-play and color analysis broadcasters.Tom, a former "Crimson-White" sports editor and news/sports director for radio and television stations in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, writes about the 1964 season in a manner that has one hearing his voice in the back of your head as you read.

Keith Dunnavant writes about the 1965 season in a manner that mirrors his books COACH and THE MISSING RING.Having attended the 1996 Orange Bowl, I enjoyed learning more about this game, and "why" Alabama came-out with Steve Sloan passing his way to an Orange Bowl passing record, at the time, and MVP trophy.

In writing about the 1973 season, John David Briley, author of the outstanding CAREER IN CRISIS: PAUL"BEAR" BRYANT AND THE 1971 SEASON OF CHANGE, does another outstanding job in what could be called by some an "epilogue" to CAREER IN CRISIS.

Those who read "Bama Magazine" on a regular basis know of Kirk McNair, its editor, and it is with his expansive knowledge of Alabama football that he writes of the 1978 championship team, with special emphasis on the 1979 Sugar Bowl and its game between Alabama and Penn State, with its famed "goal line stand."

Steve Townsend, author of A TIME OF CHAMPIONS: TALES FROM THE 1978-79ALABAMA FOOTBALL SEASONS, adds to that excellent book with the chapter on the 1979 championship team.

The last championship in 1992 is recounted by Coach Gene Stallings with Erik Stinnett, and in it he recounts what was going through his mind throughout the season and especially in the championship game against Miami.

Allen Barra, author of THE LAST COACH, writes about "The Other Five" championships, the ones not officially counted, but ones in which fans talk as their "Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda" championships.Normally, these seasons could turn into hot-winded discussions, but Barra takes the fairly neutral position in discussing all of the parameters involved in each of these five seasons.

All-in-all, TWELVE AND COUNTING, should be read by everyone who follows the Alabama football team so that they will understand more what it means to cheer for the crimson and white. If it has any flaws, I just wish it had been longer, and that is why I only gave it four stars.

One correction should be noted: the book is around 168 pages, not 256. ... Read more

Product Description

Hogarth's Literary Relationships was first published in 1948. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.

Hogarth's narrative drawings—A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress, Marriage a la Mode — have long been the delight of devotees of the eighteenth century. Although the relationship between Hogarth and the writers of the period has not passed unnoticed, it has never been analyzed in detail before.

In this engaging book Mr. Moore points out specific instances of the "manifest obligations" owed by Fielding and Smollett (and several minor contemporary novelists and dramatists) to Hogarth. He amply proves his two theses: that Hogarth was a fountain of literary inspiration and that appreciation of the artist as a satirist is essential to an understanding of eighteenth-century literature.

From the beginning of his career Hogarth was constantly imitated and plagiarized, and the illustrations in this volume include some of the more famous plagiaries. Hogarth's own work is too little known to present generation—no complete collection has been available for some hundred years — and the drawings reproduced in this book add greatly to its value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exemplary History of a Legendary Navy Torpedo Squadron!
The recent publication of the marvelous A DAWN LIKE THUNDER, the history of Torpedo Eight, points out how few histories have been published on Navy torpedo squadrons. In 1996 Stephen Moore and Pictorial Histories Publishing put out THE BUZZARD BRIGADE, a chronicle of an even more illustrious unit, the legendary VT-10. Torpedo Squadron 10 saw combat from the 1942 Battle of Santa Cruz to Okinawa, compiling a combat record second to none, a record ably covered in Moore's magnificent history.

VT-10 logged three cruises during WWII, two of them on USS Enterprise. Beginning in 1942, Torpedo 10, flying TBF Avengers under John Collett and later 'Scoofer' Coffin, saw action at Santa Cruz and various strikes around Guadalcanal, helping sink the BB Hiei among other achievements. In 1944, under the legendary Bill Martin, VT-10 returned to combat, the first fully-trained night-flying squadron, logging many successful strikes and helping damage the carrier Ryuho in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. John Lawrence brought the 'Buzzard Brigade' back in 1945 on board USS Intrepid, helping sink BB Yamato in April 1945. Damaged by kamikazes, Intrepid returned stateside, returning combat just briefly at war's end. In all, VT-10 claimed to have sunk or damaged 300,000 tons of Japanese shipping in its three combat cruises. In return, Torpedo 10 lost 30 aircraft with 27 crewmen KIA or POW.

Superlatives come easy in describing Moore's book. Exceptionally well-researched, THE BUZZARD BRIGADE gives the reader a detailed, up-close-and-personal look at the life and times of this illustrious unit. Work-ups, combat strikes and squadron life are well covered, Moore incorporating dozens of first-person reminiscences by VT-10 personnel in his smooth-flowing narrative. Over one hundred and forty photos are included showing aircrew, aircraft, ships, strike missions and so on.

All in all, THE BUZZARD BRIGADE - all 316 pages - is one impressive package...and a worthy tribute to an oustanding Navy squadron. I would give it six stars if possible. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's The Movie?
I'm thinking that I first read this when I was around the age of 12 (1965).It really grabbed my attention. The story is simple. An unknown virus infects people swimmming in the ocean. This causes them to mutate to people "monsters" that stalk and kill. The government finds out and seals off LA and nukes it.The story is of those that are "normal" and are trying to survive.

Short book.Easy to read.A great story.Enjoy! ... Read more
