Why do we eat turkey for Christmas? The French eat white sausage too, and some go on to 13 desserts. Is Christmas pudding really the oldest recipe still eaten today? And how are we to prepare for this most celebrated of all Christian festivals? Published as a companion to a Channel 4 television series, this book offers a combination of anecdote, history and more than 60 of Paul Levy's favourite Christmas recipes, with contributions from friends such as Claudia Roden, Ken Hom and Frances Bissell. ... Product Description
Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor with the legendary blue eyes, achieved superstar status by playing charismatic renegades, broken heroes, and winsome antiheroes in such revered films as The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, The Color of Money, and Nobody’s Fool. But Newman was also an oddity in Hollywood: the rare box-office titan who cared about the craft of acting, the sexy leading man known for the staying power of his marriage, and the humble celebrity who made philanthropy his calling card long before it was cool.

The son of a successful entrepreneur, Newman grew up in a prosperous Cleveland suburb. Despite fears that he would fail to live up to his father’s expectations, Newman bypassed the family sporting goods business to pursue an acting career. After struggling as a theater and television actor, Newman saw his star rise in a tragic twist of fate, landing the role of boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me when James Dean was killed in a car accident. Though he would joke about instances of “Newman’s luck” throughout his career, he refused to coast on his stunning boyish looks and impish charm. Part of the original Actors Studio generation, Newman demanded a high level of rigor and clarity from every project. The artistic battles that nearly derailed his early movie career would pay off handsomely at the box office and earn him critical acclaim.

He applied that tenacity to every endeavor both on and off the set. The outspoken Newman used his celebrity to call attention to political causes dear to his heart, including civil rights and nuclear proliferation. Taking up auto racing in midlife, Newman became the oldest driver to ever win a major professional auto race. A food enthusiast who would dress his own salads in restaurants, he launched the Newman’s Own brand dedicated to fresh ingredients, a nonprofit juggernaut that has generated more than $250 million for charity.

In Paul Newman: A Life, film critic and pop culture historian Shawn Levy gives readers the ultimate behind-the-scenes examination of the actor’s life, from his merry pranks on the set to his lasting romance with Joanne Woodward to the devastating impact of his son’s death from a drug overdose. This definitive biography is a fascinating portrait of an extraordinarily gifted man who gave back as much as he got out of life and just happened to be one of the most celebrated movie stars of the twentieth century.

2-0 out of 5 stars Biased Biography
Like other reviewers, I was totally shocked to read about so many of the immoral and unethical behaviors of a star whom I once greatly admired. However, the author seemed totally biased about Newman, who he repeatedly claimed was of high moral standards, high work ethic, etc., etc.

He was just another narcissistic movie star, who was a failure as a father. He was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful men to have ever lived, but accomplished little in my eyes.If a man walks out on his three children and NEVER spends time with them when they are growing up, I see that man as a failure in life.

The author did not hesitate to write about all of his shortcomings, but still held him up on a pedestal in regard to his "character".For me, Paul Newman no longer has that position.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read on a life lived in full.
Howard Roark was to Architecture what Paul Newman was to Acting, Racing and Philanthropy. The world could use more as focused as he was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and very revealing
I had the pleasure of meeting both of the Newman's, but I never saw this side of Mr. Newman and glad I didn't at the time.I still will always have great respect for him no matter what and as far as Mrs. Newman-she is a true Goddess as far as I am concerned!

4-0 out of 5 stars Paul Newman: A LIfe
Honestly written...captures the spirit of Newman and reminds us that while famous people have a platform to do interesting things at the end of the day they put on their pants the same way everyone else does.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Was A Friggin' Freak Of Nature
There was more to the man than just a pretty face and Mr. Levy does a respectable job of chronicling the movie icon's life. This biography was certainly a breath of fresh air after recently reading the train wreck known as John Cheever's life. Mr. Levy delves deep enough to give some understanding of what made Mr. Newman tick. The actor, race car driver, philanthropist, husband, father, workaholic, quasi-alcoholic, liberal activist, entrepreneur and director was well aware of his limitations and how genetic dumb luck presented opportunities to him. Through sheer determination and years of patience, he overcame or made allowances for many of his shortcomings. Sure, Mr. Levy does briefly address some of the actor's more questionable actions such his one, short extramarital affair (6 pages), but the snafus are far and few in between. The book is fair and more of a celebration of Mr. Newman's life. He portrays him as all too human and ultimately just a decent guy. Mr. Levy's writing is sometimes a little too melodramatic for my tastes, but overall it is a wonderful read. I closed the book having learned something about Mr. Newman and how to be a positive role model for others. ... Read more

Product Description
This book answers many of history's dilemmas. It fills many of the gaps in most people's knowledge of Jewish history. Church and synagogue groups alike have often asked the same questions: Was there an Ark of the Covenant? Where did it go? Was there only one Jewish Kingdom based in Israel or were there others too? Where exactly did each of the Lost Ten Tribes settle after 721 B.C.E., when the Northern Kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians? What was the history of these tribes and where are they today? It presents much of Jewish history outside of the land of Davidic Israel. This book discusses all of the major ancient Jewish Kingdoms.Part One presents the nearly one dozen Jewish kingdoms that define the Jewish contribution to civilization from earliest times to the present. Part Two discusses the fate of the Ten Tribes which had settled in the land of Israel around 1550 B.C.E. until the Northern Kingdom of Israel ceased to exist around 721 B.C.E. ... Read more

Product Description
"The ghost of six-year-old Alison Marie Hardy has wandered the property of southern New Mexico’s wealthiest pecan farming family for decades, but it is her frequent appearances in the spooky tree tunnel near the village of Pequeno that have made the residents fearful of driving on Highway 28 at night.

Little Allison has but one mission—to summon the help of terrified bystanders to help her find her father. When she steps in front of Big Joe Silva’s pickup truck on a skinny stretch of highway in the dark of night, she sets into motion a chain of events that soon reveals a town’s long-held secrets and raises questions as to why the only two people old enough to know the truth about Alison are remaining silent. But Alison refuses to give up as she continues to tease horrified observers and torment the pecan farming family.

The reconciliation of Alison’s soul depends on the truth that she and her supporters so desperately seek—the same truth that others are so anxious to keep hidden. But before her spirit can be freed and the people of Pequeno can sleep peacefully, Alison must confront the man who betrayed her seventy years earlier."

Product Description

Owning and managing forest lands is an inherently legal endeavor. From forest acquisition to deeds and boundaries, from timber sales to bequests, few things can be done without confronting laws, rules, regulations, and traditions that define acceptable and unacceptable practices. For most owners, managing forests is a learn-as-you-go proposition, and too often a crash course in law follows a disagreement.

Legal Aspects of Owning and Managing Woodlands is both an accessibleoverview of the privileges, rights, and obligations that accompany forestownership, and a guidebook to help active forest managers use laws totheir advantage and avoid the pitfalls of expensive and exhausting litigation.

Chapters examine all aspects of woodland ownership and management, from generalissues to specific concerns, including:

  • private property and public interest
  • acquiring and owning forest lands
  • surveys and boundaries
  • managing and using forest lands
  • forest management contracts
  • ethics in forestry practice
  • forest taxation
  • planning for woodlands in your estate
  • settling disputes and shopping for a lawyer

The book breaks new ground by examining legal matters in practical, everyday language. It provides clear and concise descriptions of oftenconfusing concepts and difficult subjects, and addresses issues in a competentyet conversational tone. It is not intended to take the place of legaladvice, but it will help forest owners understand an essential body of law, enabling them to ask the right questions of their attorneys, consultingforesters, and all those they encounter in the complex task of owningand managing land. ... Product Description
THE MADNESS OF GEORGE W. BUSH:A REFLECTION OF OUR COLLECTIVE PSYCHOSIS by Paul Levy In this ground-breaking work, Paul Levy explores whether the madness that George W. Bush has fallen into is showing us something particularly important about ourselves. What if Bush's madness is a reflection of our own potential for madness? What if Bush has been collectively dreamed up to play out, in full-bodied form, a pathological role existing deep within the collective unconscious of all humanity? Though this book centers on George Bush, it is ultimately about ourselves. In The Madness of George W. Bush: A Reflection of Our Collective Psychosis, Levy analyzes the current state of our world as if it is a mass shared dream all 6.4 billion of us are collaboratively dreaming up into materialization. Drawing heavily on the insights of the great doctor of the soul, C. G. Jung, Levy identifies the root process being dreamed up on the world stage is a collective psychosis he calls "malignant egophrenia." He illumines how this disease of the psyche expresses itself non-locally (not bound by space or time) throughout the underlying unified field that connects us all, propagating itself through the unconscious blind spots of the collective. He points out that if the malignant egophrenia epidemic manifesting in our world continues to go unrecognized, it will result in endless suffering and self-destruction. Levy proposes that this collective madness is simultaneously revealing to us our potential for an evolutionary quantum leap in human consciousness. He concludes that whether we destroy ourselves as a species or wake up depends on enough of us recognizing what the insanity of our current world crisis is revealing to us. The choice, and responsibility, is truly ours. "Paul Levy, in The Madness of George W. Bush, does a brilliant job of deconstructing the invisible spiritual and cultural ways that corruption flows into our souls and our minds -- rooting itself in our ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an interesting perspective on Bush and the shadow self
I found this book to be an insightful look at how George Bush has been demonized and how that's really reflective of a process of how people externalize their own issues and project them on to other people. Levy builds a strong case for how the madness and demonization of Bush is ultimately something we are all responsible for by our choice to treat Bush as a being of such evil and harm and ignorance that we can't see the human person that he is.

If there's one thing I really would have liked to have seen from Levy, it would be more focus on the solution to the madness of Bush. He only writes a few chapters on that solution and ultimately doesn't spend enough time showing how it can be implemented or how to utilize the concepts he speaks of to make active and healthy changes in our lives. He's able to prove his point about how the shadow self can manifest and be projected, but more focus on what to do with that shadow self, how to work with it, etc., would have been really nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Radical new perspective on psychology of humans
Actually, this is not radically new if you have studied Jung. However, within the last 30 years, quantum theory and the proof of a non-local physical universe certainly adds a new twist to Jung's writings.

As stated in the foreward, this is not a Bush-bashing book, it simply uses Bush and his administration to describe the 'shared psychosis' that permeates humankind, more or less it seems since the beginning of time.Mr. Levy's writing will jump right off the page and directly into your soul if you have ever studied quantum physics. For me, the jump from classical to quantum physics was fairly easy 25 years ago. However, until I read 'Madness' I had never applied the concept of non-local forces to consciousness itself, or as it were collective consicousness.

This book is well written, and is very understandable regardless of the reader's background. It is essentially a collection of articles, and although there is some repetition throughout chapters, this actually helps enforce some of the key points in regards to collective psychosis. Also, the sections and chapters are well labeled, so that readers can easily choose topics of interest.

I would recommend the book to anyone who has every studied Jung (or who wants to). Also, for any fans of the writings of Ken Wilbur and similar authors seeking to determine the intersection between science and religion, this is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars "IN A DEMOCRACY YOU GET THE KIND OF LEADER YOU DESERVE"
Bush and his administration has been doing precisely what I would expect them to do. This is why I didn't vote for him TWICE. The riddle I have been chewing on for these years is that a bunch of people DID VOTE FOR HIM TWICE!

WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING!!!?

Paul Levy in this book explores this riddle as the collective psychosis that it is. In a country founded on the system "...of, for, and by the people" there are risks. These risks are well worth taking as there has not emerged a better political system. For this brilliant system of democracy to work it DOES require an awareness of the complexities of the individual and collective nature of our fellow citizens. This book beautifully holds a mirror up to the collective soul of America and in essence says, "We have met the disease, and it is us".

The first step to curing a disease is to know the disease. This book provides the microscope to view the germ and possibly the needed vaccine.

My only regret is with the COVER the publisher chose to give this book. The sophistication and intelligence of this book deserves better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Frightening Truth
There are many reasons for Americans to be in denial about the truth of this day. It is so ugly, so extensive, that witnessing it will lead an individual through a dark channel of hopelessness. But ignoring the truth is choosing a path of slavery. There are a lot of brave truth-seekers out there, using this resource to connect with each other, and to new-comers brave enough to ask tough questions. Please visit [...]to see a deeper spiritual perspective of this man, this day, and this spiritual battle raging around us. If you want to contact me, do so through [...] ... Read more

Product Description
Few scholars have provided as much insight into the struggle of leaders, ideas, and policies as Paul W. Schroeder. Constantly challenging conventional views, and drawing upon a masterly command of the sources and literature, Schroeder provides new answers to old questions about international history and politics since the age of Napoleon. Were European international relations really driven by balance of power politics, or has that traditional view blinded us to an underlying normative consensus on the "rules of the game" that frequently contributed to cooperation among the leading states in the system? Are alliances primarily a means of the aggregation of power against stronger states, or do states often use alliances as instruments of influence or control over their allies? Was World War I contingent upon a confluence of independent processes that intersected in 1914, or was it the product of more deeply-rooted and interconnected structural forces that pushed inevitably toward war? What is the role of moral judgment in historical investigation? Raising new questions and offering provocative new interpretations, Schroeder encourages historians and political scientists alike to reconsider their long-standing beliefs about the evolution and dynamics of modern diplomacy.

Product Description
The team that operated the Nut Island sewage treatment plant in Quincy, Massachusetts, was every manager's dream. Members of the group performed difficult, dangerous work without complaint. They needed little supervision. They improvised their way around operational difficulties and budgetary constraints. They were dedicated to the organization's mission. But their hard work led to catastrophic failure. How could such a good team go so wrong? In this article, the author tells the story of the Nut Island plant and identifies a common, yet destructive organizational dynamic that can strike any business. The Nut Island effect begins with a deeply committed team that is isolated from a company's mainstream activities. Pitted against this team is its senior management. Preoccupied with high-visibility problems, management assigns the team a vital but behind-the-scenes task. When trouble strikes and management is unresponsive, team members feel betrayed and develop an us-against-the-world mentality. They stay out of management's line of sight, hiding problems. Management, disinclined in the first place to focus on the team's work, is easily misled by team members' skillful disguising of its performance deficiencies. The resulting stalemate typically can be broken only by an external event. The Nut Island story serves as a warning to managers who concentrate their efforts on their organization's most visible shortcomings: sometimes the most debilitating problems are the ones we can't see. ... Product Description
Rivtow was just a three-boat log-towing operation when Lucille Johnstone came aboard as an unskilled girl Friday in the late 1940s. By the 1980s, Rivtow had taken over its biggest rival to become one of the giants of the marine transportation industry with connections worldwide, and Lucille was the driving force behind its success. As the company grew she worked her way from receptionist to secretary to dispatcher to administrator to CEO and finally, to president. A remarkable feat for a woman in those times, and made even more remarkable in that her unlikely success took place in the male-dominated world of towboating.

Lucille Johnstone was as legendary for her kindness and social conscience as she was for her clever negotiating and creative deal making. Because of her selflessness, she unfortunately did not think it necessary to secure her position in the corporation she helped to build, ending up on the outside looking in after a generational shift of ownership. Putting that behind her, Lucille went on with life, this time as a driving force behind Expo 86, the new Vancouver International Airport and St. John Ambulance, among a number of other businesses and charities. Lucille's many recognitions include an honorary doctorate from UBC as a Woman of Distinction, and being named to both the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada. ... Read more

Product Description
Focusing on the European telecommunications sector, which holds a vital strategic position in an economy that relies on information-processing activities, this book highlights the largely untapped skills and potential contribution women employees can make to total quality programmes. It explains how the principle of equality-driven total quality can be extended to encompass the full diversity of a workforce, and how the principles involved can be applied to other industrial sectors. This textbook makes the link between total quality management success and equality. A commonality is demonstrated between the goals of equal opportunities and TQM through the development of equality-driven involvement. Equality objectives are likely to be more effectively implemented if synchronized with overall organizational strategic objectives. Conversely, organizations adopting TQM need to place a greater emphasis on issues of involvement, which recognize the diversity of the workforce. Without integrating the philosophies of equality and total quality, it is difficult to generate consistent levels of involvement throughout the workforce.Such involvement is fundamental to the people-driven aspect of a successful TQM programme. The focus on the "involvement gap" heralds a new approach and way forward for industrialists and academics to bridge company TQM and equal opportunity programmes with workforce reality. In a recent survey of British manufacturers, TQM techniques were shown to be used by over 90 per cent of the respondents. Yet, few companies adopting TQM are achieving their desired goals. Lack of employeee involvement, a prerequisite of successful TQM, has been highlighted as a potential reason for this shortfall. This book explains the direct link between equality and quality in the context of employee involvement and commercial objectives. Swasti Mitter is the author of "Employment Implications of New Technologies for Women". ... Read more
