Beautiful but...
A beautiful book..Wonderful to be able to peep into their private rooms and see how the wealthy reside. I prefer Pierre Berge's taste, his is less sombre. The one shown on the front cover is divine.
However I wished there were more photos of the external part of these beautiful houses and photos of the parties and celebrations when the houses were lived in.
(It was interesting to spot some flea market stuff mixed with the silver and antiques! and
phones in every room )
Unfortunately, with so much art and beauty it overwhelms and smothers rather than uplifts.I felt jaded and sad before the end of the book.

Yves St. Laurant opulent world
Yves St. Laurant not only designed some of the most magnificent clothing in the world, but what an opulent life he and Pierre shared. The photography showcasing the magnificent collections of these two is superb. They truly had quite an eye for many treasures in the world.

Very Beautiful Book
A selection of decors, mainly by Jacques Grange, that illustrate the sophistication of the houses shared by Yves St. Laurent and Pierre Berge. This is about as "high end" decor as you can get. However, several of the places are quite simple yet brilliantly furnished with a kind of taste rarely seen elsewhere. In a some of the homes or apartments simple objects and rare treasures are mixed together, but in an unpretentious manner. In others, extreme opulence is the key. However the workmanship of everything is the best that can be had anywhere. This is what places look like when money is no object.

Given the material that is covered by "The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge," a reader might have expected this book to be one of the most fascinating interior design volumes issued in decades, and in this regard it does not disappoint.Indeed, the richly-layered environments and richly-enjoyed lifestyles crafted by the late designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge compel one to delve into the book over and over again.

"The Private World" is divided into eight chapters.The first is a 12-page analytical essay on the philosophy that guided Saint Laurent's and Berge's residential designs, while the remaining seven are each devoted singly to three homes in Paris, a work studio in Paris, a seaside house in France, and two homes in North Africa. These seven establishments are generously dealt with by photographs that cover exterior and interior spaces, full-room sweeps and focused close-ups of individual objects. Some of the seven locations and specific rooms have appeared previously in design magazines and other books.Still, the sum of the images offered here is stunning in revealing the care and resources that Saint Laurent and Berge devoted to collecting, decorating, and simply creating extraordinary backdrops for their lives and dreams.Overall then, it is fair to say that the book is an ode to the wondrous extremes to which a cultivated French taste for antiquities, modern art, and even adapted stage settings can go.

What limited text is offered in this otherwise ambitious book sets the scene for understanding what inspired Saint Laurent's and Berge's tastes and sensibilities, but one wishes for so much more.This desire for additional material is most strongly felt in looking at the individual residences, especially the villa at the seaside resort of Deauville.Here, for example, I longed for a great deal more information regarding the influence of Marcel Proust on the main house and Leon Bakst on the dacha.(That material is better handled, in fact, in the two chapters that Christiane de Nicolay-Mazery devotes to the Deauville property in her "French Interiors: The Art of Elegance.")One wishes too that the publishers of "The Private World" had taken the time to eliminate the many typographical, grammatical, and syntactical errors found throughout the book.

It is precisely what it claims to be -
It is a catalog that displayed and sold a collection of great Earthly beauty in its highest form. What a collection these two had! It will never be duplicated, but this book is the only place where these pieces exist together again from this day on.

Own it: you'll not regret it.

Souvenir of the "Auction of the Century"
This is a beautiful production and ideal for anyone interested in the items auctioned who was unable to get - or afford- the set of Christies Catalogs . There are interesting photos of the auction room and wonderful pictures of the original rooms and many of the items. It ends with a complete catalog of the auction in very tiny photos. The main negative about this publication is the small print on metallic gold paper which is extremely difficult to read.

Beautiful book; well worth the price
Wonderful homage to one of haute couture's greatest designers. Well worth the money; my only complaint is that the book is paperback; I would have preferred hardcover as this is a great coffee table book.Beautiful pictures and sketches of some of YSL's famous designs.Love the hot pink cover, too!

A book that, at the time, had something new to offer. However, new books are on the way too.
I agree with Chic Savage's review. The book covering the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983 (by Saint Laurent and Diana Vreeland) is a more comprehensive overview of the most important and influential years of Saint Laurents' work, however most of the garments featured in this book are NOT in the Met book. Obviously, being a recent publication, you get some more recent designs in YSL Style, but you also get some older designs rarely seen in any of the published YSL books out there. I have not seen the 'Images of Design' book yet, but the Met book and YSL Style complement each other and, when combined, offer good but still not complete visual coverage of the designer's career. So, afterall, I am still glad I own this and the met book.

New books are on the way, so check them out first and flip through them in your local bookstore or library when they become available , if you can, before purchasing on Amazon, perhaps they'll have complete coverage of YSL's career.


Another great book to own is a paperback published in 1987 by the Art gallery of New South Wales (Australia) in conjunction with a travelling YSL exhibiton. This book features many RUNWAY photos paired with small pictures of the original sketches of the designs. Search for Australian sellers on [...] or other sites for the best prices as, understandably, there are many copies about in Australia , so the price is more reasonable than in than the rest of the world.

If you can get hold of a copy of the HARDCOVER edition of the Met book then do so, instead of settling with the softcover which has a less attractive cover, however the content is exactly the same.

Insult to a great designer
If he were not dead I would not have purchased the book.Poorly pagenated, cheap paper and poor printing.

Went to see the display at the musuem at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.Yves Saint Laurent: Style Then purchased the book.It was a good addition to the sight seeing and gives us great pleasure to review what we had seen.

As an introduction and overview, wonderful!
Given the recent death of M. Yves Saint Laurent, one can only hope that this is but the first of many volumes to come devoted to this extraordinary talent. As an introduction to his Haute Couture and Rive Gauche collections this paperback volume is surprisingly jam-packed with good images and copies of his drawings.

For further reading and contemplation of M. Saint Laurent's work, I suggest the following titles, if you can find them. The first, is the exhibition catalogue published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in conjunction with their 1983-84 exhibition. "Yves Saint Laurent", 1983, ASIN: B00188CAQU.

The second, is a beautiful volume entitled "Yves Saint Laurent: Images of Design 1958-1988", 1988, ASIN: B000ON4GCQ

For an insight into M. Saint Laurent's life and the process of Haute Couture, I recommend the marvelous DVD entitled "Yves Saint Laurent - His Life and Times/5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris", released in 2007 and available, as of this writing, here at AMAZON. ... Read more
