Excerpt: Morocco -Barbary Lion, often considered the national emblem of MoroccoThe full Arabic name al-Mamlaka al-Maribiyya ( ) translates to "The Western Kingdom". Al-Marib (meaning "The West") is commonly used. For historical references, medieval Arab historians and geographers used to refer to Morocco as Al-Maghrib al Aqá ("The Farthest West"), disambiguating it from neighboring historical regions called al-Maghrib al Awsat ("The Middle West", Algeria) and al-Maghrib al Adna ("The Nearest West", Tunisia). The English name "Morocco" originates from Spanish "Marruecos" or the Portuguese "Marrocos", from medieval Latin "Morroch", which referred to the name of the former Almoravid and Almohad capital, Marrakesh. In Persian and Urdu Morocco is simply called "Marrakesh", just like the pre-modern Arabic name. In Turkish, Morocco is called "Fas" which comes from the ancient Idrisid and Marinid capital, Fes. The word "Marrakesh" is derived from the Berber word combination Mur-Akush (-), meaning Land of God. Ruins of Chellah, Rabat The area of present day Morocco has been inhabited since Neolithic times (at least since 8000 BC, as attested by signs of the Capsian culture), a period when the Maghreb was less arid than it is today. In Mesolithic ages the geography of Morocco resembled a savanna more than the present day arid landscape. In the classical period, Morocco was known as Mauretania, although this should not be confused with the modern-day country of Mauritania. Modern DNA analysis (see link) has confirmed that various populations have contributed to the present-day gene pool of Morocco in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19291 ... Read more

Excerpt: Theodore Theodorsen (8 January 1897 - November 1978) was a Norwegian-American theoretical aerodynamicist noted for his work at NACA (the forerunner of NASA) and for his contributions to the study of turbulence. Dr. Theodore Theodorsen was born in Sandefjord, Norway in 1897 to parents Ole Christian Theodorsen, a chief engineer in the Norwegian merchant marine, and his wife Andrea Larsen. He was the oldest of six children. Early on he showed exceptional academic promise. At one point Theodores father had taken examinations for a merchant marine engineer's license. He was the only applicant who correctly answered a particularly difficult question. However to his fathers surprise his then twelve year old son was also able to solve the problem. At age sixteen, after finishing compulsory schooling, Theodorsen attended gymnasium (equivalent in the USA to senior high school-junior college) in the nearby town of Larvik. If certain grade levels were attained one would gain a scholarship to university. Norway was then far ahead of most nations in the liberalization of education. Theodorsen's grades were so outstanding that he was admitted to the leading engineering university in Norway, the Norwegian Institute of Technology in Trondheim. In those days there were no dormitories; students rented rooms in private homes. Many of the professors in those days were German or English, therefore a student at the university had to be familiar with all three lan...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13348295 ... Read more

Read more
