Product Description

The twenty-seven commencement addresses by twenty-five distinguished college and university presidents brought together here provide an extraordinary sampling of the social history of our time and an inspiring expression of faith in the future.

Perhaps in no other period have we experienced as violent a “tidal wave of swift-moving and bewildering events,” as one of the commencement speakers whose utterances are included in this interesting collection puts it, as we have during the period covered by this report—from the student riots at Berkeley in 1964 to the economic recession of the mid-1970s.

Hence the thoughts and expressions of our intellectual leaders take on new significance. First, as Francis H. Horn, the editor of the volume, points out, their addresses comprise an important sampling of social history of the time, and are well worth studying. This unique book is the first of its kind.

Second, the speakers are men and women who in most cases have spent their entire adult lives working in colleges and universities. Frequently their most important and formal statements were made on their own or on other campuses, and have not been preserved until now. Only three of the addresses included here have been published previously.

Third, the traditional exhortation to the graduates to somehow find the wisdom, will, and courage to solve what appear to be almost insolvable problems provides the larger framework for the extraordinary expression of faith on the part of these educational leaders in the ultimate ability of human beings to make a better world in which to live.

Now, when the national morale is at a low ebb, when hopelessness or at least apathy about the future is characteristic of our time, it should prove refreshing, perhaps even inspiring, to read these addresses which do not minimize the nation’s problems or the difficulties of the human condition but which express a cautious optimism about their solution.

Excerpt: Peter Whittle (born 27 February 1927, in Wellington, New Zealand) is a mathematician and statistician, working in the fields of stochastic nets, optimal control, time series analysis, stochastic optimization and stochastic dynamics. From 1967 to 1994, he was the Churchill Professor of Mathematics for Operational Research at the University of Cambridge. Whittle graduated from the University of New Zealand in 1947 with a B.Sc. in mathematics and physics and in 1948 with a M.Sc. in mathematics. He then moved to in 1950 to study for his Ph.D. with Herman Wold (at the University of Uppsala). His thesis, Hypothesis Testing in Time Series, generalized Wold's autoregressive representation theorem for univariate stationary processes to multivariate processes. Whittle's thesis was published in 1951. A synopsis of Whittle's thesis appeared also as an appendix to the second edition of Wold's book on time-series analysis. He remained in Uppsala at the Statistics Institute as a docent. In 1951 Whittle married Käthe Blomquist. In 1953, Whittle returned to New Zealand. In New Zealand, Whittle worked at the Department of Industrial and Sci...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2600214 ... Read more

Excerpt: Sir John Frank Charles Kingman, a mathematician, was born on 28 August 1939 in Beckenham, Kent. He was N. M. Rothschild and Sons Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Director of the Isaac Newton Institute at the University of Cambridge from 2001 until 2006, when he was succeeded by Sir David Wallace. He is famous for developing the mathematics of the coalescent, a theoretical model of inheritance, which is fundamental to modern population genetics. Though his grandfather was a coal miner, his father, who had obtained a Ph.D from Bristol University, held a government scientific post where he married John's mother Maud Elsie Harley who came from a London family. John grew up in London, attending Christ's College school Finchley, eventually being awarded a scholarship to read mathematics at Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1956. On graduating in 1960, he began work on his PhD under the supervision of Peter Whittle, studying queueing theory, Markov chains and regenerative phenomena. A year later, Whittle left Cambridge for the University of Manchester, and, rather than follow him there, Kingman moved instead to Oxford where he resumed his work under David Kendall. After another year, Kendall was appointed to a professorship at Cambridge and so Kingman returned to the University. He returned, however, as a member of the teaching staff (and a Fellow of Pembroke College) and never completed his PhD. He married Valerie Cromwell, with whom he has two children, in 1964. In 1965, he took up the post of Reader at the University of Sussex where she was teaching, and was elected Professor of Mathematics and Statistics the next year...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3201866 ... Product Description
Focusing on the work of Sir John Kingman, one of the world's leading researchers in probability and mathematical genetics, this book touches on the important areas of these subjects in the last 50 years. Leading authorities give a unique insight into a wide range of currently topical problems. Papers in probability concentrate on combinatorial and structural aspects, in particular exchangeability and regeneration. The Kingman coalescent links probability with mathematical genetics and is fundamental to the study of the latter. This has implications across the whole of genomic modeling including the Human Genome Project. Other papers in mathematical population genetics range from statistical aspects including heterogeneous clustering, to the assessment of molecular variability in cancer genomes. Further papers in statistics are concerned with empirical deconvolution, perfect simulation, and wavelets. This book will be warmly received by established experts as well as their students and others interested in the content. ... Read more

The highest point in the area is Mount Wrightson found in the Santa Rita Mountains at 9,453 feet above sea level, surpassing Mount Lemmon by about 300 feet. The English name Tucson derives from the Spanish name of the city, Tucsón , which was borrowed from the O'odham name , meaning "(at the) base of the black ", a reference to an adjacent volcanic mountain. Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Kingman Park is a residential neighborhood in the Northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States. Kingman Park's boundaries are 15th Street NE to the west; C Street SE to the south; Benning Road to the north; and Anacostia Park to the east. The neighborhood is composed primarily of two-story brick rowhouses, most of which were built when the neighborhood was founded in 1928. Kingman Park is named after Brigadier General Dan Christie Kingman, the former head of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (for whom nearby Kingman Island and Kingman Lake are also named). A major boost to development in the area came with the construction of Charles E. Young Elementary School and Hugh M. Browne Junior High School. In May 1930s, the District of Columbia Public Schools decided to construct one junior high, and one senior high, and four elementary schools in the city, including a "platoon school" for black children in northeast D.C. near Benning Road. ...
