4-0 out of 5 stars British radio comedy from the 70's that is an acquired taste
OK since I am the first reviewer here I'll give you a super quick rundown of what is going on m'kay? You get John Cleese, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie, Jo Kendall and David Hatch doing a comedy radio show. They got together for a number of years to do this and each show was ½ an hour long - like the Goon show that propelled Spile Milligan and co to comedy fame. There were a number of vinyl release tie ins for this series and a couple of books. The best place to find them via Amazon would probably be to look at the UK Amazon site since being a British radio show and given the product would have come out under the auspices of the BBC that is probably where most of the 2nd hand copies of this stuff is lying around.

Essentially those familiar with The Goodies probably have the best grounding in what to expect. It's that sort of somewhat juvenile and often very silly innuendo and bad groan inducing puns and with all three of the comedy duo who made up The Goodies in the cast and doing the bulk of the writing that can hardly come as a surprise. There are a few co-writes with the others but, well, not much seems to have come from them. In the tradition of the Goon show and other radio comedy of the time there is usually a central platform for the show to hinge on which is (vaguely) developed during the course of proceedings and unlike Monty Python, where the creators didn't feel the need to provide a coherent ending to virtually anything unless the fancy took them, here the show does try to bring things to a conclusion.

There were at least four of these cassette collections issued by the BBC in the 90's. Each has two cassettes with one show per side. Only this volume one seems available on either US or UK Amazon. And a quick cruise through both sites shows that there aren't many proper CD's out there either though five volumes are available as MP3 Download. And quite cheap too.

For fans of The Goodies or those with a hankering for the sort of twee radio comedy the BBC produced in the 70's. ... Read more

Excerpt: Simon Nicholas Grayson (born 16 December 1969) is a retired English footballer and current manager of Leeds United. Throughout his playing career he primarily operated on the right side of defence, but he was also utilised in midfield. Born in Ripon, North Yorkshire, he is the brother of former cricketer Paul Grayson and his nickname is Larry, after his namesake Larry Grayson. He started playing football for Bedale FC. Grayson began his career at Leeds United in June 1988 as both a defender and a midfielder. However, he did not manage to make the big breakthrough at Leeds, playing just twice in four years. He signed for Leicester City in March 1992 and went on to make 229 appearances in five years. During his time at Filbert Street the team won the League Cup in 1997 and was voted the club's player of the season in the same year. Grayson moved to Aston Villa in 1997 and made another 49 FA Premier League appearances at Villa Park, scoring two goals, both of which came in Villa's 1997/98 FA Cup campaign against Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion. He then signed for Blackburn Rovers in July 1999, where he made 34 appearances in his first season. He lost his place in the team the following season and spent most of the next two years on loan, with spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Stockport County, Notts County (where he scored once against Reading) and Bradford City. Grayson signed for Blackpool on a free transfer...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3165954 ... Read more

Cox (February 21, 1860 February 3, 1936) was an American lawyer and judge who became the 55th justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, serving from 1911 to 1917. Elected as a Democrat in the Fall of 1910, he was Chief Justice by the end of his six-year term. The "Marshall Constitution" case and the "Technical Institute" case were among the important decisions made by the court during his tenure. As a judge in the Indiana Supreme Court and in lower courts, he never had a decision reversed. Cox began studying law in 1877 while a law clerk for judge William E. Niblack, 27th justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. Cox came from a family of lawyers and judges, as brothers Jabez T. Cox and Millard F. Cox also practiced law and spent time as judges in Indiana. In private practice, Cox gained national attention assisting the prosecutor in the 1925 trial of D. C. Stephenson for the death of Madge Oberholtzer. In addition to private practice and his tenure on the Indiana Supreme Court, Cox's legal career also included librarian of the Indiana State Law Library, Marion County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, and city judge of Indianapolis. Cox's ancestors came to America when the land was still a British colony, and family members fought against the British in the American Revolutionary War. This particular branch of the Cox family was originally Quaker, and operated a mill on the Deep River in North Carolina, near the area that eventually became the city of Greensboro. A distaste for slavery eventually caused many Quakers to move north. Members of the Cox family moved to Ohio and Tennessee. Cox's father, Aaron Cox, wa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25660631 ... Product Description
Letters between a renowned evangelical minister (R.T. Kendall) and a senior Jewish Rabbi (David Rosen) form a bridge of understanding between two men and two faiths.

This groundbreaking book reproduces a candid exchange of letters between two prolific and acclaimed theologians as each seeks to vigorously defend his own beliefs while he is challenged by the claims of the other. Though issues and beliefs separate the two theological camps, the heartfelt correspondence between Kendall, the former minister of Westminster Chapel in London, and Rosen, the former chief rabbi of Ireland, show that deep friendships can be made and strong alliances formed between Jews and Christians. Readers will see their own questions about the differences between Christianity and Judaism reflected in this discussion. Whether on one side or none, they will come away with life-changing inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dialogue
R.T. Kendall and Rabbi David Rosen debate the differences between Christianity and Judaism in The Christian and The Pharisee. The debate takes place in the form of letters written between the two. They discuss questions each has about the other's faith, and what the major differences are.

The thing that was most striking about this book was the candid and open responses of Kendall and Rosen. They pull no punches, freely discussing what they believe and what they feel is wrong in their respective religions. But they do so respectfully and graciously, never offending. It is the kind of discourse that all people should be capable of, but rarely are.

Kendall and Rosen cover controversial topics. Was Jesus the Messiah? Will the Jews be saved if they do not believe in Jesus? Is there more than one path to God? Both authors state their case plainly and eloquently. Rosen gives great information on what Orthodox Jews believe, and a history on how their tradition has evolved. This is a great read for anyone who wants to learn the differences and similarities between Christianity and Judaism.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book that Is Much Too Short!
Do you ever wonder how Jewish leaders interpret the Old Testament passages that seem to so explicitly point to Jesus Christ? Do you ever wonder what a Jewish rabbi thinks about the messianic Jews that are growing in number? Do you ever wonder what a genuine, respectful dialogue between a Jewish rabbi and a Christian minister would look like?

The Christian and the Pharisee contains a series of letters between Dr. R.T. Kendall and Rabbi David Rosen. Both men are well-known and well-respected in their respective religious circles. The Christian and the Pharisee compiles their correspondence and features their discussion and debate regarding the pertinent issues that divide Jews from Christians. The friendship of these two men is evident in the books, even as the differences are sometimes starkly contrasted.

R.T. Kendall does not attempt to hide his desire to see Rosen evangelized and converted. His letters are overtly evangelistic, even as he respects Rosen and his faith. Rosen, on the other hand, does not consider his Judaism to be exclusive, and therefore, he affirms that Kendall may indeed be saved, even as he strongly disagrees with his Christian faith.

Just when The Christian and the Pharisee begins to delve into significant issues of Scriptural interpretation, the book comes to an end. I am not sure why these two men ended their correspondence so soon. Another set of 10 letters or so would surely not have exhausted this discussion. Perhaps a sequel will be in the works? Let's hope so. The Christian and the Pharisee is a good read with significant insight into the differences between these two religions.

3-0 out of 5 stars debate between a pastor and a rabbi
Though this book came highly reccomended to me, it was not the kind of book that I enjoy.I found the ping pong effect between the pastor and the rabbi upsetting. I see the rabbi as winning. Those who enjoy debate or argument would perhaps enjoy this book.

I don't view Christianity as just another religion, therefore it is not open to debate, it is settled.

5-0 out of 5 stars great read for people from all religious faiths
This book is a compilation of letters between two religious scholars. It is very interesting, thought provoking, and amazing that two such different people with diametrically opposed religious views can demonstrate such love and respect for each other. It is a testimony tobelievers of both religious traditions, and a thoughtful challenge to non-believers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, albeit limited
Both Rabbi Rosen and Dr. Kendall write well, and for that readers should be grateful. This book, a series of letters sent back and forth between these two men to discuss their particular faiths, demonstrates the value of this ancient form, a thing one fears may disappear in a world where two line emails count as proper correspondence. The origination of this work, Kendall's shock that Rosen considers himself a Pharisee, a thing to Kendall's worldview no one would embrace, provides a preview of both the works strengths and shortcomings.

As becomes rapidly clear, Rosen has a far deeper understanding of Christianity than Kendall often shockingly superficial knowledge of Judaism.Given which religion originated in which, one cannot help but be surprised by this balance of study. Moreover, as a result of this historic relationship, much of the work descends into Kendall's attacks on Judaism, even as Rosen steps very gingerly around challenging Christian truth claims. As a Rabbi who devotes himself to religious dialogue, this self imposed limit is understandable, if a bit disappointing. Thus Rosen does not question the apparent contradictions of the Gospel (Jesus' death on one day in the synoptics and another in John, the apparently irreconcilable birth stories of Matthew and Luke, the deep textual corruption and redaction as documented by Prof. B. Ehrman in his excellent "Misquoting Jesus, such as the "thee who are without sin" episode being absent from the Christian scripture for most of its first millenia, etc) even as Kendall continues to espouse a philosophy of essential Christian triumphalism.

Despite these shortcomings, this work provides some interesting food for thought. Those disappointed by the "niceness" of this debate should consider searching out the "Disputations of Nahmanides" a still classic medieval debate between that Rabbi and a Christian scholar regarding Christian interpretations of the Hebrew Bible, a debate which earned Rabbi Nahmanidies exile from his native Spain.

Rosen's politeness does the reader no service, nor does Kendall's ignorance of such basic tenants of Judaism such as that faiths lack of belief in original sin.Readers will surely find some material here worthy of consideration, but will likely also at times come away disappointed.

Armstrong (February 18, 1969 ) is an American podiatric surgeon and researcher most widely known for his work in amputation prevention, the diabetic foot , and wound healing. He and his frequent collaborators, Lawrence A. Lavery and Andrew J.M. Boulton, have together produced many key works in the taxonomy, classification and treatment of the diabetic foot. He is Professor of Surgery director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the University of Arizona and has produced more than 280 peer reviewed manuscripts and dozens of book chapters. Biography Early years Armstrong was raised with his younger brother, Darrin B. Armstrong, a schoolteacher, in Santa Maria, California . His father, Leo N. Armstrong, was a noted podiatrist in California and figures large in many of Armstrong s anecdotes, lectures, and writings. As a child, he traveled worldwide with his family and a core group of physicians, mostly podiatrists. This influenced his later career as an ambassador for diabetic foot care and podiatry. After attending the Dunn School in Los Olivos, California, Armstrong attended Occidental College in Los Angeles and later the California College of Podiatric Medicine, where he graduated with honors. It was during his college years that he met his wife, Tania C. Armstrong, on a trip to Egypt . It is in honor of this that their first child Alexandria A. Armstrong, later received her name. Armstrong performed his residency at the Kern Hospital for Special Surgery in Detroit, where much of his interest in the diabetic foot emerged. Additionally, it was where he became aware of the works of two influential clin... ... Read more
