Definition of Logic.Logic may be most briefly defined as the Science of Reasoning. It is more commonly defined, however, us the Science of the Laws of Thought, and some logicians think it desirable to specify still more accurately that it is the Science of the Formal, or of the Necessary Laws of Thought. Before these definitions can be of any real use to us we must come to a clear understanding as to the meaning of the expressions; and it will probably appear that there is no great difference between them.The name of logic is derived from the common Greek word Aoyof, which usually means word, or the sign and outward manifestation of any inward thought. But the same word was also used to denote the inward thought or reasoning of which words are the expression, and it is thus, probably, that later Greek writers on reasoning, were led to call their science Ikiotjjfiti hoyixrj, or logical science ; also -e%vri Aoy(/c, or logical art. The adjective Aoyi/o;, being used alone, soon came to be the name of the science, just aa Mathematic, Rhetoric, and other names ending in " ic" were originally adjectives, but have been converted into substantives.chapter{Section 42. This collection of Jevons' papers falls naturally into two groups. There are papers developing Jevons' positive conception of logic as a purely abstract, formal discipline; and there is a group of papers from the "Contemporary Review", written in criticism of Mill, in which Jevons reveals himself as one of the intellectual ancestors of the computer revolution. Logic, Jevons insists, involves only the form of thought and not the content; it is a matter of mechanical rules capable, in principle, of being followed by a machine. The second group, published under the general heading "J.S. Mill's Philosophy Tested", consists of articles on geometrical reasoning, resemblance, experimental methods and utilitarianism. According to Jevons, Mill's mind was "essentially illogical" and his famous "Logic" is a mere jumble of logic, epistemology, and psychology, utterly lacking in the rigour and formal elegance that characterize pure logic.
