2-0 out of 5 stars Want to know about George Jeffreys?
If you want to know about the life of George Jeffreys, do not buy this book. Instead of being called "George Jeffreys: A Ministry of the Miraculous," it should have been called "Elim: A Ministry of theMiraculous," because instead of telling anything about Mr. Jeffreys, all it does is recount the first 14 years or so of the Elim PentecostalChurch in the UK.

The book is not a biography. Rather it is a historybook regarding the Elim Church: it's founding in Belfast, Ireland, and it'ssubsequent growth and move to Wales and England.

I'd say that the onlyredeeming quality of this book are the eyewitness and personal testimoniesof salvation and healing, and newspaper accounts of various crusades.

Ifyou want to read a good history book about early Pentecostalism in the UK,then purchase this book. If you'd like to read a biography about GeorgeJeffreys, you'll have to find another book...then please tell me about it,because I'd also like to read it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mainly For Jones Collectors
Jeff Jones is one of my favorite fantasy artists.I especially love his impressionistic oil paintings shown on the cover of this Sketchbook. However, all of the art inside the covers is rather sketchy pen and ink work interesting mainly to collectors of Jones. The real plus of this one is the long interview (2000) with George Pratt , a 20-year friend.A much better buy, in my opinion, is THE ART OF JEFFREY JONES, as it contains more of his better works. ... Product Description

This book is the first to focus a bright light on the life and early career of George S. Schuyler, one of the most important intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance. A popular journalist in black America, Schuyler wielded a sharp, double-edged wit to attack the foibles of both blacks and whites throughout the 1920s. Jeffrey B. Ferguson presents a new understanding of Schuyler as public intellectual while also offering insights into the relations between race and satire during a formative period of African-American cultural history.

Ferguson discusses Schuyler’s controversial career and reputation and examines the paradoxical ideas at the center of his message. The author also addresses Schuyler’s drift toward the political right in his later years and how this has affected his legacy.

“Frames are mental structures that shape the way we see the world. . . . When you hear a word, its frame is activated in your brain. . . . In politics our frames shape our social policies. . . . Because language activates frames, new language is required for new frames.”—George Lakoff

For decades, the powerful communications machine of the conservative movement has controlled our national political discourse. One of the biggest obstacles to progressive victory has been seeing what American political speech looks like when it is not “framed” by the Republican noise machine.

Framing the Debate: Famous Presidential Speeches and How Progressives Can Use Them to Change the Conversation (and Win Elections) is about unleashing the power of communication in contemporary progressive politics. The book presents fifteen key speeches by American presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George Bush—in order to define the big ideas and images—the “frames”—that each speech evokes to show how those framing techniques can be applied to today’s political debate in order promote a progressive perspective.

An essential book in today’s political climate, Framing the Debate will be instrumental in helping to reshape progressive political language and rhetoric.

An expert on speeches and messaging, Jeffrey Feldman is the editor in chief of the influential political blog Frameshop (www.frameshopisopen.com). He also has a weekly segment on The Thom Hartmann Show on Air America, and travels the country offering seminars on language and progressive politics.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit wonky, a bit okay, preferred him on C-Span
Feldman can be vitroilic and say dumb things when he is not breaking his arm patting himself (and fellow "progressives'") on the back, but his book has a point and it makes it well. The point is that how you say something is as important, perhaps more, as what you say.Take the issue, change the focus, keep it on your turf, make your the issue work for you.For anyone interested in politics and in speaking pursuasively in groups, it's a fair exercise. But just fair. When Mr. Feldman applies it he can be very effective like when, on C-Span, he turned the discussion on the war on "what should be the constraints on the powers of the executive?"I thought it well played and articulated. Then he can get silly like in his written defense of the Move-On "Betray-Us" ad (it's a conspiracy, see, the conservatives just want you to believe that applying the word "betrayal" to a general implies treason because normal, fair-minded, people can't/won't make such a link on their own). But, those are asides. The book makes good points. Most people are less interested in HOW to make a point and more interested in what the point itself is.Me, I like the mechanics so I score it three stars but I think the audience will be limitted to wonky types.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contrived and not worth the time
This book is a bit contrived, quite formulaic, and in the end neither useful or particularly interesting.I thought the premise was quite interesting, and the cited speeches were for the most part stirring. However, the subsequent analysis was contrived, with a strong feeling of trying to force history to conform to modern values. The recommendations weren't really apt or useful.

I'm a big fan of George Lakoff, and found his first book (Don't Think Of An Elephant!/ How Democrats And Progressives Can Win: Know Your Values And Frame The Debate: The Essential Guide For Progressives) intriguing, and his most recent book (Thinking Points: Communicating Our American Values and Vision) both empowering and useful. For someone who hasn't read Lakoff, this book may be interesting and useful, but I'd suggest your time would be better spent with Lakoff instead -- in particular, the most recent one is great reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Communicating Progressive Principles
Progressives have been less effective than consevatives in communicating political ideas.Progressives have focused on dryly presenting policies and programs without laying out the underlying values or principles with which voters could more readily identify.Feldman's book helps to remedy this shortcoming among progressives.

Feldman analyzes how 15 presidents have used frames in major speeches to convey big ideas. In so doing, he advises progressive politicians, activists and ordinary citizens how to use framing to persuasively communicate progressive principles. This book should be welcomed byprogressives and all those interested in effective, genuine political communication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart book, changes how you see things
Every once in a while, I find a book that changes how I see things completely--and this is one of those books. If you've ever watched a TV newscast or listened to a radio broadcast or read a newspaper--this book will suddenly open your eyes. By walking us through some amazingly cool speeches by U.S. Presidents, Feldman turns every reader into what he calls a "framer" of ideas--ordinary people who "drive the debate" by engaging what they hear and then speaking back.Easy to understand and easy to put to use.Everyone should read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective on a bit of history
This is a must have book.Jeffery Feldman offers new and creative insight into famous speeches of our country's Presidents.Even more than fascinating to read, it opens your eyes to what you hear on the TV and read in papers.Politics and Issues in general are looked at in a new way after reading just part of this book.Democrats and Republicans alike gain new insight into our Presidents. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Trends in the Know-how of stress-related disorders.
This book is part of a series of personality-guided psychotherapy manuals having an editor such as Theodore Millon. Millon has received the 2003 Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution to Applied Research from the American Psychological Association. This information may appear tangential. However, those who are familiar with the extensive and prolific research of Millon are aware that much of the intelligentsia produced in the domain of Personality Disorders has been most enlightening, and often therapeutically helpful, although some clinicians may disagree with his viewpoints, conceptualizations, and treatment procedures.

The book's authors have cogently and proactively adopted Millon's personality-guided approach, and have treated us with a sublime work on stress-related conditions and disorders, PTSD, and interactions between stress and traumas. This is a very hot topic since APA has recently published new guidelines on the best treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder. There are people and patients who have a very pessimistic view of the nowadays' world, which they describe as unsafe, and dangerous.History teaches us that it has always been like this, and often times (unfortunately) even worse. As clinicians we cannot do much to change the events. However, what we can do is to help our patients to better deal with them. In light of the above, this book is an excellent tool because it offers a broad view of the topic, starting with an accurate conceptualization and ending with a choice of treatment plans and actions.

The book is very well-written, very informative, and sometimes fascinating because of its broad views, and the links to Hellenic and Hellenistic classical, philosophic, and epic accounts.
The senior author, Dr. George Everly, Jr. is a leading expert in stress-related disorders. His wealth of research is astonishing. Thus, as critic as you might be, you will have a hard time trying to find something which is not covered in this work at the time of publication (2002). In fact, the theoretical overview is so broad and tantalizing that you will be surprised how much there is we still didn't know.

I did learn much from this book in the past. It is my wish that other clinicians (and non) will profit from it as well.

Product Description

Presidential candidates’ names such as Lewis Cass, Samuel Tilden, Alton Parker and James Cox may not be familiar to many, but what about Barry Goldwater and George McGovern? This book is about Senators Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) and George McGovern (D-SD), men who gave their leadership to both the conservative cause and liberal cause during an era of turmoil and strife. It’s about two men who lost the most coveted position in the world of politics in landslide proportions, but were determined not to be a footnote in the annals of presidential history. In addition, it’s about redemption for people on the right and left of the political spectrum who can be proud of two politicians that, in the simplest terms, demonstrated that defeat can be both decent and honorable.

Product Description

Available in print for the first time, this day-by-day diary of George H. W. Bush's life in China opens a fascinating window into one of the most formative periods of his career. As head of the United States Liaison Office in Beijing from 1974 to 1975, Bush witnessed high-level policy deliberations and daily social interactions between the two Cold War superpowers. The China Diary of George H. W. Bush offers an intimate look at this fundamental period of international history, marks a monumental contribution to our understanding of U.S.-China relations, and sheds light on the ideals of a global president in the making.

In compelling words, Bush reveals a thoughtful and pragmatic realism that would guide him for decades to come. He considers the crisis of Vietnam, the difficulties of détente, and tensions in the Middle East, while lamenting the global decline in American power. He formulates views on the importance of international alliances and personal diplomacy, as he struggles to form meaningful relationships with China's top leaders. With a critical eye for detail, he depicts key political figures, including Gerald Ford, Donald Rumsfeld, Deng Xiaoping, and the ever-difficult Henry Kissinger. Throughout, Bush offers impressions of China and its people, describing his explorations of Beijing by bicycle, and his experiences with Chinese food, language lessons, and Ping-Pong.

Complete with a preface by George H. W. Bush, and an introduction and essay by Jeffrey Engel that place Bush's China experience in the broad context of his public career, The China Diary of George H. W. Bush offers an unmediated perspective on American diplomatic history, and explores a crucial period's impact on a future commander in chief.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lost Treasure
What a pleasant surprise to find this book.I have had an interest in black conservatives ever since discovering Thomas Sowell, who was an intellectual life preserver while I was drowning in the muck of political correctness in higher education.I discovered that George Schuyler was a pre-eminent black conservative and journalist of the early to mid-20th Century and wondered why I had not seen his name more frequently.I read his novel Black No More and was fortunate to find his out of print autobiography Black and Conservative at a used bookstore in Columbus.I thought then that someone should put together a collection of his essays and was pleased to find out that this was subsequently done.

This collection spans all of Schuyler's career and shows him at various stages of his intellectual and ideological journey.Although ending up on the right side of the political spectrum, Schuyler took a circuitous route to get there. The essays in this collection highlight Schuyler's sharp wit and rhetorical flair whether arguing from the left, right or somewhere else of his own making.

Schuyler's most well known and controversial essays are included. These include his attack against the concept of a specifically Black-American art style, his argument against the civil rights acts of the 1960s as interfering with the natural positive progress of race relations, his intense criticisms of Malcolm X and, perhaps most infamously, his equally intense criticisms of Martin Luther King, Jr.

As ignorance of history is the foundation for ignorance of the modern day, there is much to gain from reading Schuyler to place the present into proper context. For instance, it is simply ridiculous to hear Malcolm X being lauded as a "civil rights leader."In fact, Malcolm X was openly hostile towards civil rights and considered true civil rights' leaders to be sellouts.Although he later changed his tune, it was only after his period of influence was largely over, after he had left the Nation of Islam and after he changed his name from Malcolm X to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.Schuyler does a good job of reminding us that perhaps Malcolm X does not deserve the good will, let alone the warm fuzzies, with which many would remember him.

Schuyler also does a good job of demonstrating that pre-1960s America was not a land of relentless racial hostility and that, while certainly a long way from utopia, much progress was being made towards the ideals of equality without the need for governmental interference.Even with respect to MLK Jr., while Schuyler may not have given King his proper due, Schuyler does make legitimate points regarding King's association with communists and reminds us that many times King's presence at protests had the deleterious effect of promoting rather than deterring violence.

My five star rating, however, should not be taken as a wholesale acceptance of Schuyler's positions. His conservatism often took a rather kooky turn and led him down some extreme paths. When William F. Buckley started to clean up conservatism to make it a more mainstream movement, numerous ideologues became marginalized and it appears Schuyler was in this group.Rather, my high rating is a tribute to Schuyler's independent thinking as well as his ability and courage to express controversial and unpopular ideas in a very articulate manner.

My rating also should not be extended to the editor of this volume.Jeffrey B. Leak's introduction does make some good points, such as suggesting that Schuyler's hard ideology and in-your-face manner might have actually slowed the development of black conservatism by making things more difficult for moderate black conservatives. Also, Leak makes an exceptionally good point that Schuyler's upper New York upbringing may have caused him to underestimate the anger and frustration of Southern blacks.

But for every hit Leak makes, there is a miss.Leak speculates that Schuyler repressed a period of incarceration for being AWOL from the military.Yet I think it is clear that Schuyler never mentioned this incarceration because, unlike the civil rights' protesters with whom he later disagreed, he considered incarceration to be a badge of shame. There was nothing repressed about it.

Perhaps most laughable is a comparison Leak makes between Schuyler and modern black author Shelby Steele. In a footnote regarding this comparison, Leak questions criticisms of affirmative action by stating that we never hear upper class whites bemoan their inherited wealth. What is this dude smoking? One only needs to step a single foot on a modern college campus to encounter white liberals suffering massive palpitations over exactly the financial class into which they were born.In fact, such white liberals argue that their own white guilt applies not only to themselves but also to me, even when they know my economic upbringing was worlds away from their own. This alone makes me seriously question Leak's analyses of other issues.(Though, on a note of fairness, Leak's position is somewhat true in that white liberals never seem willing to give up their own jobs to "promote diversity" but are more than happy to advocate that I should lose my job instead, usually done with a tone dripping with patronization.Apparently upper class white liberals feel so bad about their privileged positions that they are willing to discriminate against working class whites to assuage their emotional pain and thereafter point to the racial characteristics of the parties involved to justify their actions to themselves.)Finally, as a strictly academic matter, it is hard to take an editor seriously when one checks his footnotes only to discover that one of them, footnote 47, is simply missing.

Of course, no one is going to read this book for the editing. One will read it for the writing of George Schuyler.Agree with him or not, Schuyler will make a person think. It is a shame, and a statement of our times, that his name is not much better known. ... Read more

The world's smallest and most widely reproduced work of art, the postage stamp was an official vehicle for extraordinary visual work for more than 100 years before twentieth-century artists and activists began to appropriate the format as a potential venue for their own unsanctioned expressions. From the stamp experiments of Fluxus mail artists like Robert Watts to fantasy stamps issued by fictional countries, this humble canvas has been home to all manner of free expression. The Book of Stamps is at once an homage to and continuation of this tradition. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductary Book
This is a good book to learn the basic and fundamental concepts behind Object-Oriented System Analysis

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful, but could be better
This is quite informative text on OOSAD. I did not read it from cover to cover, but as much as I have, it seemed dry at times, and I think it should employ more diagrams and more colors ;)
The only three colors you can find in this text are black, white, and blue. That's it. If you're a visual person (like me), you would want some colorful diagrams and screen shots - sort of like used in System analysis and design by Shelly, Cashman, and Rosenblattt.

Good things about this book (if you're a student) are for example:
-it uses bold font to designate key terms. It is possible to find books out there which use italics, and it is hard to find key terms if you need them.
-it lists key terms and page numbers at the end of each chapter. I happened to use "New Perspective" series some time ago (for Excel 07 and Access 07), and they don't have page numbers where to find key terms. That's can be a hassle.
-it explains UML diagrams used in OO quite well (to my limited understanding).

4-0 out of 5 stars Critical Incident Stress Management: A New Era and Standard of Care in Crisis Intervention
The author's use of this book has set the new standard for crisis care and disaster preparedness. The principles and tools contained inside Critical Incident Stress Management are global and innovative. The only drawback is the author's use of diagnositic terminology that demands that the reader have at least a rudimentary mental health background.Inspite of this, I highly recommend this book to crisis workers and other helping professionals. This is an excellent choice for textbook material in the classroom. ... Product Description

Whereas other studies have focused on George Wallace’s career as a national figure, Stand Up for Alabama provides a detailed, comprehensive, and analytical study of Wallace’s political life that emphasizes his activities and their impact within the state of Alabama. Jeff Frederick answers two fundamental questions: What was George Wallace’s impact on the state of Alabama? Why did Alabamians continue to embrace him over a twenty-five year period? Using a variety of sources to document the state’s performance in areas including mental health, education, conservation, prisons, and industrial development, Frederick answers question number one. He cites comparisons between Alabama and both peer states in the South and national averages. Wallace’s policies improved the state, but only in relation to Alabama’s past, not in relation to peer states in the region or national averages. As a result, energy was expended but little progress was made.

To answer the second question, Frederick uses the words of Alabamians themselves through oral history, correspondence, letters to the editor, and other sources. Alabamians, white and eventually black, supported Wallace because race was but one of his appeals. Stand Up for Alabama shows that Wallace connected to Alabamians at a gut level, reminding them of their history and memory, championing their causes on the stump, and soothing their concerns about their place in the region and the nation.

Jeff Frederick examines the development of policy during the Wallace administrations and documents relationships with his constituents in ways that go beyond racial politics. He also analyzes the connections between Wallace’s career and Alabamians’ understanding of their history, sense of morality, and class system. “Stand up for Alabama” was the governor’s campaign slogan.

4-0 out of 5 stars George Wallace & Alabama's State Government
George Wallace dominated Alabama politics for a quarter century. Consider the six elections Alabama held for Governor between 1962 and 1982. Voters elected Wallace four times and elected his wife once (when he was ineligible to run for re-election).

Wallace has been the subject of many books (such as Dan Carter's The Politics of Rage and Stephen Leshar's George Wallace: American Populist). But previous books focus on Wallace's impact on national politics. In Stand Up for Alabama, Jeff Frederick examines Wallace's impact on Alabama.

Stand Up for Alabama is a success. Frederick portrays Wallace as a governor who spent his time campaigning instead of trying to run Alabama. The book shines when Frederick explains how Wallace and Alabama's legislature interacted; the relationship was contentious and the relative power of each side shifted as voters' opinions of Wallace shifted.

The book has a few drawbacks. Conservative readers won't like Frederick's steady criticism of Wallace's opposition to tax increases. At times, the narrative bogs down when it cites reams of statistics comparing Alabama's government programs to those of neighboring states.

At 400 pages, Stand Up for Alabama requires a commitment from its readers. But politics junkies with an interest in state government and civil rights will want to read Stand Up for Alabama.

Product Description
Sessions examines the work of five young designers from the South California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) who are having an impact on architectural practice and discourse. In each of the projects featured here, it is evident that software and hardware are only the beginning of the design process, and that architectural practice is, perhaps, moving on to another level of exploration. Designers George Yu, Marcelo Spina, Marta Malé-Alemany, Benjamin H. Bratton, and Hernan Diaz-Alonso engage in a series of discussions with Jeff Kipnis. These discussions, or "sessions," reveal strengths and inadequacies in the works, and place emphasis on the ideas with which the designers are struggling, rather than focusing on their finished designs. Joe Day contributes an essay which situates the various practices within the current discourse of architecture. ... Read more
