5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic from the 1800 in Scotlan
This book is well worth the reading for children of all ages; especially age 10 years and up.However, children in our day are likely too immature to appreciate or even understand the language or situation these children faced. It is well written and if parents were to pre-read each story then help the child to read these stories it would be a fine. The art work is lovely. The hard bound edition is grand and worth every penny. These stories simply do not ever go out of style. Our kids read this book in their teens. We read each chapter together as a family and still talk of those lovely evenings now part of our family history. There are several separate stories in this book so it makes for several nice adventures each completed in a few days at the most.

George McDonald was a contemporary of Mark Twain but lived in Scotland. They actually were acquainted and while they wrote to children quite often the stories are suitable for any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian without being preachy while lovely stories :)
Someone should make a movie of the main story here because it would be a classic! Simple enough for the very young child but with heart enough for the older reader who has a heart to feel with. I like to read it to myself if I can't find a child to read it to every Christmas. ... Read more

Product Description

This book is the first to focus a bright light on the life and early career of George S. Schuyler, one of the most important intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance. A popular journalist in black America, Schuyler wielded a sharp, double-edged wit to attack the foibles of both blacks and whites throughout the 1920s. Jeffrey B. Ferguson presents a new understanding of Schuyler as public intellectual while also offering insights into the relations between race and satire during a formative period of African-American cultural history.

Ferguson discusses Schuyler’s controversial career and reputation and examines the paradoxical ideas at the center of his message. The author also addresses Schuyler’s drift toward the political right in his later years and how this has affected his legacy.

Product Description
For his humanistic religious verse, his poignant and deeply personal antislavery poems, and, above all, his lifelong enthusiasm for liberty, nature, and the art of poetry, George Moses Horton merits a place of distinction among nineteenth-century African American poets. Enslaved from birth until the close of the Civil War, the self-taught Horton was the first American slave to protest his bondage in published verse and the first black man to publish a book in the South. As a man and as a poet, his achievements were extraordinary.

In this volume, Joan Sherman collects sixty-two of Horton's poems. Her comprehensive introduction—combining biography, history, cultural commentary, and critical insight—presents a compelling and detailed picture of this remarkable man's life and art.

George Moses Horton (ca. 1797-1883) was born in Northampton County, North Carolina. A slave for sixty-eight years, Horton spent much of his life on a farm near Chapel Hill, and in time he fostered a deep connection with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The author of three books of poetry, Horton was inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in May of 1996. ... Read more

Product Description

A collection of Jackson's letters from prison, Soledad Brother is an outspoken condemnation of the racism of white America and a powerful appraisal of the prison system that failed to break his spirit but eventually took his life. Jackson's letters make palpable the intense feelings of anger and rebellion that filled black men in America's prisons in the 1960s. But even removed from the social and political firestorms of the 1960s, Jackson's story still resonates for its portrait of a man taking a stand even while locked down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Truthseekers
"Soledad Brother" is a powerful testament to the struggle of George Jackson to bring truth and find justice in a totally un-just system. The letters of George Jackson put you in that cruel jail cell right next to him. His words and his totally uncompromising spirit will stir your soul with emotions. From pain and anger, to sorrow, but he will also make you laugh ultimately though, he willeducate you. Because George Jackson is a teacher...a most compelling teacher. He teaches with love but he mixes it with a strong dose of rebuke; particularly against those who have the nature of a quisling.

He rips apart the falsehoods that create conflicts of Race and class. Then he relates the purposes for such divisions. He gives graphic insights concerning the "Civil Rights" struggles that marked the tumultuous, game changing, decade of the Sixties. Apparently, his warningswere not heeded and his letters could have been written today.

"Soledad Brother" is a must read not just for Black people, but for all people who are lovers of truth, justice and freedom!

Out of a large order this item arrived almost a week before the rest of the order. Good condition. Great price would definitely order from here again.

5-0 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever
In light of the fact that today, in 2009, the prison population in the U.S. is at an all-time high, with more people incarcerated in our jails and prisons than inthe entire rest of the world combined, with one percent of the entire adult population incarcerated and thirteen percent of all black males between the ages of 18 and 29, with over twenty-four hundred persons sentenced as juveniles in the U.S. to life without parole (Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch estimate that there are no more than 18-24 in the entire rest of the WORLD), this heartbreaking look at the reality of prison life is more relevant than ever. This book provides an incredibly eloquent window into the complete failure of the criminal justice system in the United States, and the dehumanizing and criminalizing effect of prison itself on both prisoners and guards. It is also a literary masterpiece that stands beside prison classics like Dostoyevsky's House of the Dead or Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.George Jackson created a portrait of prison so damning and true that it can lead to only one conclusion: prisons must be abolished and a new system for the rehabilitation of criminals must be created, or America will become just "one big prison yard," to quote Bob Dylan from his song "George Jackson."

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
This book allowed the reader a rare peek into the thoughts, opinions and emotions of a boy becoming a man in prison. The rage, the hormones, the injustice and the recklessness of the system and his childhood activities. His experience was valid while his words were eloquently laced with black liberation propoganda. The book is a bit mysterious in that there are letters to "A friend," and a person referred to simply as "Z."I have read about George Jackson in accounts others have written about him and they paint him as a giant political figure, ironicaly in the same unrealistic way the prison industry did. This book reveals Mr. Jackson as a young man who struggled with the concepts of who he was, where he came from, how he got there and how he could revolutionize the thoughts of others as an example for change through his letters and his actions. This piece was an important reading.Hard to accept while easy to believe - insightful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Errors in Text and Online Test
I am very disappointed in this book.I bought it to review for an EMT refresher class, and found a few errors in the text, and with diagram identification.Compounding these errors, is that several of the answers from the comprehensive online review test ([...]) are incorrect -- making the book and the tests virtually worthless as a review tool. Not what I would expect from a large publisher like McGraw-Hill.

5-0 out of 5 stars McGraw-Hill EMT-Basic Review
The book was in exellent condition and I received it in a timely manner even though I was deployed. It is a good review book, not good if you are looking to start EMT-B training.I am starting EMT-B training and this book will help me get a good foundation but it is not what the course is taught off of.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for EMTs, not for students
First, I bought this book simply to review the EMT materials. I've been an EMT-Basic for several years now and I just wanted a review all in one place. For that, this book is great. Also, this book seems to cover the material better (with an exception, see below) and in more depth than the other study guides. I chose this one from a stack I looked through while having lunch one day. Plus, there's a free test online. Haven't tried it yet, but I will when I'm finished.

For a basic study guide, this is really good. Really good, that is, if you already know the material. Quality control is a pretty big problem with this book - some of the diagrams are mislabeled or even the wrong diagram. The problems mostly seem to be with the diagrams, I'm guessing they didn't get the same amount of QC as the rest of the book.

If you're looking for a review and already know the material then the errors just draw attention to themselves. It's sad, though, because this book is very well organized and laid out.

On the other hand, If you are an EMT Basic student, move past this guide or wait until a next edition. It is just confusing when the text refers to a BVM and the picture is of a pocket mask, and similar issues.

2-0 out of 5 stars Test answers frequently wrong
I have never written a review before but some of the answers in the book are so blatantly wrong it prompted me to want to prevent anyone else from buying this review book. Its like they never took the sample questions themselves and checked the answers.

While there is a great mini review of important points for each section of EMT the all too frequent incorrect answers makes you doubt the validity of the entire book.

Even the online exam they offer is frequently incorrect! Very very poor form from McGraw Hill. Especially for paying that much money ... Read more

Product Description
There are many text books about engineering design and some include project evaluation techniques. There are text books on accounting methods and yet others on business management. This book does not aim to replace these specialized texts but brings together the elements of these subjects that young engineers working in industry – particularly the construction industry and its customers – need to understand.

Most engineers learn about money the hard way: by experience in the workplace. The authors having done this themselves recognized the gap in engineers’ education and set out to bridge it. This book is based on a 1996 course George Solt pioneered for final-year engineering undergraduates. The book is written in an approachable style and gives young engineers as well as mature engineers an insight into the way engineering businesses run, the importance of capital and the problems of cash flow.

Product Description
Sir George Francis Hill (1867-1948) was perhaps best known as a numismatist, although his scholarly interests and accomplishments included a range of time periods and subjects. A classicist by training, Hill built his career at the British Museum's department of coins and medals. In his forty-three years there he produced volumes on coins of antiquity; Greek history and art; coins, heraldry, and iconography of medieval and Renaissance Italy; and treasure troves. In 1931 Hill became the Museum's director and principal librarian, the first archaeologist to hold this post. His four-volume History of Cyprus (1940-1952) ranged from Cyprus' earliest years to the twentieth century, and became the standard text on the subject. It is a valuable resource for scholars of the country, of antiquity and of the Mediterranean world. Volume 1 describes the land of Cyprus before unravelling its history from the Stone Age to the Crusades. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Textbook as Theft, $tudents as Dollar $igns
The McGraw-Hill MCAT guide is a piecemeal collection of formulae and problems garnered from the company's various textbooks. From the broad, shoddy organization of the book, to the frequent typos, the McGraw-Hill MCAT book succeeds only in its true mission: to squeeze money out of students while keeping production costs as low as possible.

Most importantly, much of the information presented in the typical textbook is extraneous for the MCAT. It is imperative that MCAT guides at least minimally recognize the patterns and format of the MCAT. Only in the first ten or so pages (on basic Newtonian physics) do the authors acknowledge the material that will or will not be on the MCAT. In other sections, they go into excruciating detail, providing tables and formulae that I can only surmise I shouldn't memorize because they are far too complex.

The book presents almost no analysis or recognition of the types of problems that will be on the MCAT. In fact, most of the problems presented in the text are irrelevant. MCAT questions are disparate from most questions we would run into in college textbooks; calculators are not permitted in the MCAT, so any problem requiring more than a very simple mathematical operation will never be on the it.

On the other hand, certain aspects of those tables and the authors' meandering theoretical explanations are important. It is vital that future authors delineate precisely what should and should not be studied for the MCAT. If not, the authors are simply wasting students' time. We all know the singular reason why we buy these books: to study for the MCAT. What is relevant should be implicit in the content of the book.

The "review" materials they provide are not suitable for MCAT prep; they simply copy and paste the main points from the text, presumably in order to fill up more pages so the guide can exceed 1,000 pages, like their competitors' books. Except for some of the biology sections, almost no pictures are provided. The two practice tests provided in the accompanying CD have the exact same errors: typos, ambiguities, problems not suited to the MCAT. The practice tests do not even provide you with an actual MCAT grade (e.g., 30/45); they grade you based on percentages (e.g., 70% of questions correct) and do not even provide a timer (your time will not expire at 60 or 70 minutes, the length of the different MCAT sections).

It is shameful, but unsurprising, that McGraw Hill, which owns the Standard and Poor's rating agencies complicit in driving millions of people into poverty during the latest economic crisis, would also prey on pre-medical students with an ersatz review guide.

Use your time and money on another book. Do not buy Examkrackers: their glowing Amazon reviews are clearly formulated by company employees. Similarly, I would take the previous, glowing 4-star review here with a grain of salt.

I have read the newest Princeton Review MCAT book Cracking the MCAT, 2010-2011 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation), which came out in April 2010, and it admirably fixes almost all of the problems I addressed above, although there are about a dozen minor typos I have found so far (e.g., discreet v. discrete, "the reactants iaZn [sic] the following reaction").

I have not read any Kaplan books but have heard positive reviews about them.

[...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Great diagrams thanks to publishing company
I am using this book in conjunction with the official MCAT topics list to fill out a study outline. The great part about this book is that it has excellent figures- MUCH better than the doodles given in Kaplan, Examkrackers, etc. This is because McGraw Hill uses images from its biology books that are very nicely done. I would highly recommend this book for its diagrams and low cost as a SUPPLEMENT to your MCAT preparation. ... Read more
