Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Zoroaster (also known as Zarthusthra and Zarthost) (Avestan: Zaraθuštra) (Persian: زرتشت) was an ancient Iranian prophet and philosopher, and the founder of the Zoroastrian religion. It is generally thought that he lived about the 10th or 11th century BCE, though some scholars believe that he lived sometime between 1750 and 1500 BC or between 1400 and 1200 BC. The traditional Parsi people of Pakistan and India place the Prophet as older than 6000 BC. The hymns attributed to him-the Gathas-are at the liturgical core of Zoroastrianism. His name in his native Avestan was Zarathustra (Zaraθuštra). The Western-English names "Zoroaster" and "Zoroastrian" (ie. Mazdayasna) derive from a later (5th-century BCE) Greek translation of Zōroástrēs., as attested in the Lydiaka of Xanthus (frag. 32) and in Pseudo-Plato's Alcibiades Maior (122a1). The Greek Zōroástrēs appears to be based in 1) a phonetic transliteration or semantic substitution of the Avestan zarat- to the Greek zōrós, the latter meaning "undiluted," and 2) from an association of ástra "stars" in place of the Avestan "-uštra," the Avestan word being widely accepted to mean or relate to "light" (see below). This form appears subsequently in the Latin Zoroastres and, in later Greek orthographies, as Zōroástris. In Avestan, Zaraθuštra is generally accepted to derive from an Old Iranian *zarat-uštra-. While the first half of the name "zarat-" is strongly referenced to mean "golden," (cf. meanings) from the old Eastern-Iranian (and Modern Persian) zar- -ز...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (born c. 80-70 BC, died after c. 15 BC) was a Roman writer, architect and engineer (possibly praefectus fabrum during military service or praefect architectus armamentarius of the apparitor status group), active in the 1st century BC. By his own description Vitruvius served as a Ballista (artilleryman), the third class of arms in the military offices. He likely served as chief of the ballista (senior officer of artillery) in charge of doctores ballistarum (artillery experts) and libratores who actually operated the machines. He has been called the world's first known engineer. A 1684 depiction of Vitruvius (right) presenting De Architectura to Augustus Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci, an illustration of the human body inscribed in the circle and the square derived from a passage about geometry and human proportions in Vitruvius's writingsLittle is known about Vitruvius' life. His first name Marcus and his cognomen Pollio are uncertain. Cetius Faventinus speaks of "Vitruvius Polio aliique auctores" in his epitome; it is possible that the cognomen derives from this mention by Cetius, meaning Vitruvius, Polio, and others. Most inferences about his life are extracted from his only surviving work De Architectura, though he appears to be known to Pliny the Elder through his description of constructing mosaics in Naturalis Historia, he is not actually named. Frontinus, however, refers to "Vitruvius the architect" in his late 1st century work On Aqueducts (1.25) Likely born a free Roman citizen, by his own account Vitruvius served the Roman army under Julius Caesar with the otherwise unknown Marcus Aurelius, Publius Minidius, and Gnaeus Cornelius. These names vary depending on the edition of De architectura. Publius Minidius is also written as Publius Numidicus and Publius Numidius, speculated to be the same Publius Numisius inscribed on the Theatre of Heraclea. As an ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Hero (or Heron) of Alexandria(c. 10?70 AD). was an ancient Greek mathematician who was a resident of a Roman province (Ptolemaic Egypt); he was also an engineer who was active in his native city of Alexandria. He is considered the greatest experimenter of antiquity and his work is representative of the Hellenistic scientific tradition. Hero published a well recognized description of a steam-powered device called an aeolipile (hence sometimes called a "Hero engine"). Among his most famous inventions was a windwheel, constituting one of the earliest instances of wind harnessing. He is said to have been a follower of the Atomists. Some of his ideas were derived from the works of Ctesibius. Much of Hero's original writings and designs have been lost, having been burned by anti-pagan Christians sometime in the late 4th to 5th century?whether intentionally or unintentionally, as many of the writings from the Library of Alexandria were housed in pagan temples later burned by Christian leaders such as Pope Theophilus of Alexandria. Fortunately, some of his works were preserved in Arab manuscripts. ... Read more
