Product Description
This work is a translation into English of the Third Edition of the classic German language work Mengenlehre by Felix Hausdorff published in 1937. From the Preface (1937): ``The present book has as its purpose an exposition of the most important theorems of the theory of sets, along with complete proofs, so that the reader should not find it necessary to go outside this book for supplementary details while, on the other hand, the book should enable him to undertake a more detailed study of the voluminous literature on the subject. The book does not presuppose any mathematical knowledge beyond the differential and integral calculus, but it does require a certain maturity in abstract reasoning; qualified college seniors and first year graduate students should have no difficulty in making the material their own ... The mathematician will ... find in this book some things that will be new to him, at least as regards formal presentation and, in particular, as regards the strengthening of theorems, the simplification of proofs, and the removal of unnecessary hypotheses.'' ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classical Book
The classics are must read books. They are short cuts in developing your skills. The only drawback is sometimes its notation. If you want to have a strong background Set Theory by Hausdorff is mandatory. The book is very direct in its approach which requires some attention. Some of its topics are still advanced and no matter what is your field, they may give you some insights in your own expertise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal set theory-topology text
This book (never translated into English) is of great historical significance. It is still worthy of study. Hausdorff was a leader in the second wave of set theory (post Cantor) and a founder of point-settopology. In his hands set theory became a tool for the workingmathematician. This book still has the power to stir the mathematicalheart. Even a jaded modern reader can learn much from it. There are manywonderful mathematical "set pieces"---a personal favorite is thecontinued fraction expansion of a pair of countable ordinals. The writingis concise, but not without touches of Hausdorff's literary polish. ... Read more

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Alan Mathison Turing, OBE, FRS (pronounced ; 23 June 1912 7 June 1954), was an English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist. He was influential in the development of computer science and providing a formalisation of the concept of the algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, playing a significant role in the creation of the modern computer. During the Second World War, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre. For a time he was head of Hut 8, the section responsible for German naval cryptanalysis. He devised a number of techniques for breaking German ciphers, including the method of the bombe, an electromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine. After the war he worked at the National Physical Laboratory, where he created one of the first designs for a stored-program computer, the ACE. Towards the end of his life Turing became interested in chemistry. He wrote a paper on the chemical basis of morphogenesis, and he predicted oscillating chemical reactions such as the BelousovZhabotinsky reaction, which were first observed in the 1960s. Turing's homosexuality resulted in a criminal prosecution in 1952homosexual acts were illegal in the United Kingdom at that timeand he accepted treatment with female hormones, chemical castration, as an alternative to prison. He died in 1954, several weeks before his 42nd birthday, from an apparently self-administered cyanide...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1208 ... Read more

Excerpt: Marek Hasko (14 January 1934 in Warsaw 14 June 1969 in Wiesbaden, Germany) a writer and a famous figure of Polish post-war literature. Haskos biography is highly mythologized, and many of the legends about his life he spread himself. Marek was born in Warsaw, as the only son of Maciej Hasko and Maria ucja, née Rosiak . At first he was living with his parents in Zotokos, later they moved to Warsaw. In Haskos family children were baptised relatively late, hence the writer-to-be was baptized on 26 December 1935 in the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Warsaw . It is said that during the baptism ceremony when asked if he renounces the evil spirits Marek answered no. Later these words were reported as the evidence of Mareks strong character. Hasko was three years old when his parents divorced in 1937. Maciej remarried a year later. He died on 13 September 1939, when his only son was five. The war left its stamp on Mareks psyche, later he wrote "it is obvious to me that I am a product of war times, starvation and terror; it is the reason for the intellectual poverty of my short stories. Simply, I can not think up a story which does not end in death, catastrophe, suicide or imprisonment. Some people accuse me of pretending to be a strong man. They are wrong." With the outbreak of World War II, Haskos mother was working in the management secretariat of the City Power Station in Warsaw. During the occupation she was fired and ran a food stall till the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising. In consequence, the financial situation of the family worsened. At this time Marek started his education; however, all documents providing i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2000243 ... Read more

Product Description
