Editorial Review Product Description The old House of Representatives chamber had been vacated in favor of thenewly-designed and constructed House Chamber and there had been several proposals for theuse of the old chamber. It had been used as a portrait gallery, but the portraits were visually lostamong the marble columns of the room. Senator Morrill suggested that statues be donated byeach state to commemorate not more than two citizens of illustrious renown. At the time, therewere few states in the Union and it was probably supposed that the Hall could accommodate allof them, with room to spare. As the number of states in the Union grew, however, it became apparent that thenumber of statues which could be accommodated in "Statuary Hall" (the room) would have tobe limited. In 1933, the situation became intolerable. Statues were stacked three deep in someplaces and it was not possible to properly view the various figures. Congress then directed theArchitect of the Capitol to make suitable arrangements to disburse the statues in other areas ofthe Capitol building. As the reader can imagine, this was not an easy process since it wasdecided that the 65 statues then in "Statuary Hall" would be reduced to 38. Today, the "National Statuary Hall" collection consists of 95 statues by 61 differentsculptors in 10 different areas of the U.S. Capitol building. The list below shows their locationsand the order in which this guidebook is laid out. See the building map on the back cover of thisbook. The subjects of the statues range from the legendary (George Washington) to the trulyobscure (John Burke). Even with the lesser-known figures, however, they were of sufficientstature in their own state to be the subject of state legislative resolutions or bills denominatingthem as representatives of the state, followed by a funding campaign at either state expense orpublic subscription. The purpose of this book is to provide biographical information for these 95honorees and to provide a map and guide for a walking tour so that you can see your state'sstatues or all 95 or any combination. An index by state is provided and an index by honoree are found on the inside backcover pages. Customer Reviews (2)
An invaluable addition to your visit to the Capitol "National Statuary Hall: Guidebook for a WalkingTour" is both thoroughly researched and easy to use. Both the contentand the layout of the book excellent in every regard. In the terms oflayout, the design of the Capitol itself presents an author withdifficulty. The arrangement of works of art can often be confusing. However in this guidebook, the collection is presented in a logical fashion- which lends itself easily to a `walking tour'.Each statue has adetailed description and biographical sketch of the individual, which helpsa visitor understand the importance of the individuals represented in thecollection. I would highly recommend this book to anyone planning a visitto the Capitol, or to anyone simply interested in the `slice' of Americanhistory represented by the 96 statues found in the Statuary Hall Collectionof the Capitol.
A "MUST HAVE" book for any visit to the U.S. Capitol ! |

Editorial Review Product Description A culmination of the authors’ years of extensive research on this topic, Relational Data Clustering: Models, Algorithms, and Applications addresses the fundamentals and applications of relational data clustering. It describes theoretic models and algorithms and, through examples, shows how to apply these models and algorithms to solve real-world problems. After defining the field, the book introduces different types of model formulations for relational data clustering, presents various algorithms for the corresponding models, and demonstrates applications of the models and algorithms through extensive experimental results. The authors cover six topics of relational data clustering: This book focuses on both practical algorithm derivation and theoretical framework construction for relational data clustering. It provides a complete, self-contained introduction to advances in the field. |
