5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
This book is very well written and has a lot examples and problems.Very useful

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of 3rd Edition
I've owned the 3rd Edition of this book for about a week now. Therefore, it is difficult for me to give a truly complete review, but I have at least skimmed through the various chapters. This book looks amazing, even for someone with little to no training in MATLAB (like myself). It starts with the basics and quickly moves into the more advanced material without going into unnecessary details about computer programming. It explains how to use the tools you need and gets to the point quick.

I am a graduate student in mechanical engineering and I am very disappointed that a numerical analysis course that utilizes this book was not offered during my undergraduate years.I think it should be mandatory that every senior undergraduate mechanical engineering student fully understand how to utilize MATLAB for solving engineering problems...something that I lacked upon graduating, so now I'm making up for it on my own time with this superb book.

Bottom Line: This book makes the perfect companion for any engineering student interested in learning to solve real-world problems with MATLAB (a commonly used program in the real-world).

Thanks to the many authors of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality
I already had a few years of experience with Matlab before purchasing this book, but I still found it to be very useful. It goes through the usual introductory concepts, but then dedicates a significant portion of the book to science and engineering related discussion, which may be useful to those new to Matlab and interested in its field-specific applications.Retuning to the usual introductory concepts, after years of exerience, I found most of it to be "old news", but there were still some elementary functions that I was unaware of and coding techniques that together allow me to write shorter, more time-efficient, and more readable (to outsiders) code.Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This is one of the best books out there.I not only used it in my vibrations class back as an undergraduate (and I had vibrations with Magrab too!), I have continued to find new ways to use it in the work world today.Dr. Magrab and the others have written a very useful book that definitely relates engineering to this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars hit the bullseye
This one is really for engineers, it goes over the basics first, subsequently it goes into more details. It has handy examples of mechanics, dynamics...etc.if you are a mechanical or an electrical engineer, and you are a matlab user, this book would mean a lot to you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The TRUTH about therapy
Finally, the cat is out of the bag! Therapists listen up. Some of the best therapists in our business are telling us what we need to hear. And we better listen if we plan to be relevant to our clients and of value to our profession. The Truth of therapy is revealed in this wonderfully wellwritten book. The rules have changed indeed.

In the ancient days oftherapist-dominated therapy it was assumed that somehow we would descendlike golden eagles and eaglettes upon the unknowing psychotherapeutic preyalso known as patients and/or clients. It was assumed that based on ourclinical wisdom we would be able to direct and provide the kinds ofinterventions and/or techniques that would make a curative difference. Allthis without narry a need to truly include those to whom we are entrustedto provide hope, freedom, and maybe some healing and cure along the way.Add to this mix the push of managed behavoiral care and endearment of briefis better approaches to psychotherapy all in the name of the almightydollar, and we may have lost our way on the yellow brick road and havedescended into Alice's bottomless pit in search of the white rabbit and noteven know it! Sound a bit much? Step back, and ask yourself, as atherapist--"when was the last time you used "common factors"to determine your treatment plans? when was the last time you asked yourpatient and/or client for "their" direction on the interventionsand/or techniques used to attain the psychotherapeutic holy grail?" Ifthese questions seem alien to your gestalt then be assured that there ishelp out of this mess. There really is a better wasy to do what we do. Ithas always been there, but we have meely walked passed it, ever in searchof yet another method.

The truth is that our patients/client'/sinterpretation of what is going on in our therapy, the therapeuticalliance, transfeerence and all that good stuff- still matters. And when wefocus on "common factors" we will indeed have more effectiveinterventions in our therapy."Changing the Rules" presents botha develpmental and empiracal focus, which is most comforting. The texttakes us on a very practical and needed journey starting with the initialinterview with our patient/client, then on to the design and delivery ofthe various therapeutic interventions that can positively impact the go andflow of what our patient/client wants- which may or may not be what wewant. This is not a therapeutic cookbook with all kinds of cutesiereceipes for success. It is a realistic, hardscrabble analyis of what wemay have been in denial of for too many years. The lights are back on. Weare indebted to the authors for taking the time to do the legwork, theresearch to once again remind us all of the power and potential of the workwe are all blessed to be in. Finally, what sets this book apart form othersis the special sections on gender bias and ethics- so important to be awareof and modify -if these are "blind spots" in our practice.Iwould higly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in psychotherapy. There are lessons for the new and seasoned therapists. In future additionsof this work, I would like to see more material on ethnicity and age astherapeutic factors between and among therapist and patient and/or client. This is a book you will read and re-read many times. It will not gather duston a therapeutic shelf. Well written and well worth the read. Ira S. Katz,PhD- Clinical Psychologist-Soledad, California ... Read more

Product Description
Edward Said's oft cited claim that Orientalists past and present have spun imaginary geographies where they sought ground truth, has launched a plethora of studies of fictive geographies. Representations often reveal more about the culture of the writer than that of the people and places written about. Yet the study of imaginary geographies has raised many questions about Western writers' abilities to provide representations of foreign places.

Writes of Passage explores the interplay between a system of "othering" which travelers bring to a place, and the "real" geographical difference they discover upon arrival. Exposing the tensions between the imaginary and real, the contributors focus primarily upon travelers from the 18th and 19th Centuries to pin down the imaginary within the context of imperial power. With essays covering the regions of Africa, South Asia, and Europe, this book presents a unique historical exploration of issues of place, space and landscapeand contemporary studies on travel writing and migration.Writes of Passage represents a valuable addition to the burgeoning literature on travel writing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Imaginative Passages
Writes of Passage is a wide-ranging collection of scholarly essays, which while very theoretically informed and quite current, still manages to bevery accessible. Anyone interested in the intensely interesting study oftravel narratives and what they tell us about cultural assumptions willfind essays of interest. Although Michael Brown's article on Neil Miller'sGay travel seemed a bit overwhelmed by the theory, this was the exception. The others balanced theory and historical background very nicely. DerekGregory's "Scripting Egypt" was worth the price of the bookalone. Laurie McMillin's "Enlightenment Travels" made some lovelyconnections between the British search for personal enlightenment in Tibetand Romanticism's interest in mountains, bring in interesting connectionswith Kipling's Kim. If you are working in the study of travel narratives, check this collection out--the introduction gives one of the best overviewsof scholarly issues in travel writing I have seen. ... Read more
