4-0 out of 5 stars A rather mellow view of the Cape Countryside
"In the Land of Afternoon" is Lawrence Green's rather mellow view of the rich Cape Countryside with all its wisdom and humour, strong tradition and strange legends.Reading the book, you can almost taste the country cooking and the perfume of the veld. It's a good collection of anecdotes as well as social and economic history. There's also a good collection of illustrations - photos and drawings. The coloured frontpiece was specially painted by Dorelle for "In the Land of Afternoon". There's also drawings by Dorelle along with some old photos are from the Arthur Elliot Collection in the Cape Archives.

Lawrence George Green was an English South African travel writer, who wrote prolificly on the Southern African region. Green was from all accounts a charming man and he was certainly a prolific writer. With his death in 1972 and the collapse of the publishing house almost all his books were issued by, Howard Timmins, shortly before this, the book went out of print and has remained so since. Sadly, by limiting his writings to popular non-fiction, Green is seldom mentioned in either local or international references as an African writer of note. However, amongst cognoscenti of travelogues and cultural history and collectors of Africana, he remains highly regarded and is sometimes cited as belonging to a select group of English travel writers of the 20th century such as Eric Newby and Wilfred Thesiger, though he cannot be considered a writer in the heroic travel idiom, While he travelled widely in Europe and Africa, he had a predilection to travelling in style and declined any rough travel where he could so.

His writing is typical of the mid 20th century colonial and post-colonial era non-fiction writing of Southern Africa, along with others of note such as F.C. Metrowich, T.V. Bulpin and Eric Rosenthal. Conservative and Eurocentric in style, it nevertheless encompasses all the cultural diversity of the sub-continent, often alluding to changes in the social and political milieu but rarely judgemental in regard to any of the socio-political issues under debate at the time. Unlike many of his contemporaries of South African literature, Green stays well away from any political commentary or critique.

Green still ranks as one of the most prolific writers to come out of Africa. Sales of all his published books amount to more than 750,000 copies. In all, he produced 34 books, with six of his bestselling books subsequently reproduced and published under different titles in the UK and at least three translated into a foreign language. He published on average a book a year between 1933 and 1972, other than the WW2 years where his service with the Royal and South African Air Forces in North Africa impacted his free time.

On a personal note, I bought my copy of this book in South Africa back in the mid-1990's along with a fairly large collection of his other books. All of them are beautifully written, a good entertaining read and you pick up some weird and wonderful bits of arcane history and information that you won't find anywhere else. They ARE kindof folksy in a South African kind of way, they're certainly not PC but they ARE a good record of the early South Africa of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Not to everyone's taste, but I like 'em. ... Read more

Product Description
Cadwalader, a Marine captain severely wounded in Viet Nam, recuperates but is unable to return to combat. Strongly influenced by his experience in the Marines, he recruits a small band of unlikely “teachers,” well-educated social drop-outs, and launches an experiment in the rehabilitation of hard-core juvenile delinquents. The site he selects is Penikese, a remote island off the Massachusetts coast. Once a leper colony, Penikese is slowly transformed by the students and staff into a school community. The Outward-Bound atmosphere the author and his staff create on the primitive island involves construction, boat-building, farming, and nature study. If the wood isn’t chopped, there’s no heat; if the vegetables aren’t harvested, there’s no food. Cadwalader and his cohorts treat the kids consistently, and try to hold them accountable for their actions. Buffeted on all sides—by the weather, the violent unpredictability of the kids, jittery surrounding communities, and a rudderless criminal justice system—the author undergoes some painful changes as he confronts the stark irrationality and rock-hard recalcitrance of his juvenile criminal charges, some of whom he takes into his own home. The admonition of an old Marine sergeant comes back to haunt him: “That son-of-a-bitch was born bad, and ain’t you or anyone else gonna change him.” But Cadwalader and his colleagues persist, and despite setbacks, the school survives. The dialogue is raw and gritty. The narrative moves from the hilarious to the somber and back again as the author chronicles the lives of the boys who come to Penikese. Castaways is a true story, a tale of idealism tempered but not surrendered—an intensely human portrait. ... Read more

Product Description

"Shackelford captures Jefferson's intellectual vitality, his cultured interests, and the esteem in which he was held by so many who came into contact with him... [His] splendid account of Jefferson abroad captures what he was truly about." --Times Literary Supplement

"An intimate and richly detailed description of Jefferson's encounters with European culture... Shackelford's contribution to the study of Jefferson's intellect is as attractive as it is substantive in contributing to our understanding of Jefferson's intellect and the forces that shaped it." -- Georgia Historical Quarterly

"This is a beautiful book: graceful in prose and rich in illustrations." --Journal of American History

During his time as minister to the court of Louis XVI, from 1784 to 1789, Thomas Jefferson became not only a friend of France but also the champion of European culture in the United States. Because the man who was to become America's third president learned so much from his five years abroad -- about the fine arts of architecture and painting and about the practical arts of agriculture, bureaucracy, and commerce -- his stay in Europe remains one of the most important of any American before or since. Illustrated with more than sixty images of the actual places the future president visited and described -- including both contemporary works and new photographs --Jefferson's Travels in Europe is the first book to describe and explore the significance of Jefferson's European journey, detailing the sights he visited, the people he met, and the events he attended. Based on extensive research into Jefferson's account books and correspondence, as well as the experiences of other travelers of the day, George Green Shackelford connects Jefferson's journeys in France, England, Italy, the Netherlands, and the German Rhineland to his intellectual and aesthetic development.

"Immaculately researched, thoughtful, and persuasive... A valuable, handsomely produced book." --Journal of the Early Republic

"An engaging account of important cultural landmarks in late eighteenth-century Europe and... a useful contribution to the literature on Thomas Jefferson, providing an insight into the private man and his wide circle of friends in Europe. It reminds us again of the vitality and comprehensiveness of Jefferson's interests." --Journal of Southern History

"A meticulously researched and presented work that increases our knowledge of this period of Jefferson's life." --William and Mary Quarterly

[original long copy]"While Americans generally still consider Thomas Jefferson to be a veritable Apostle of Americanism, it was his foreign residence and travels that made him America's most sophisticated national leader. To understand how Thomas Jefferson completed his metamorphosis from a talented provincial, it is necessary to reconstitute what he saw on his European journeys, to describe where he lived in Europe, and to speak of how his European friends influenced him."--George Green Shackelford, inThomas Jefferson's Travels in Europe.

During his time as minister to the court of Louis XVI, from 1784 to 1789, Thomas Jefferson became not only a friend of France but also the champion of European culture in the United States. Because the man who was to become America's third president learned so much from his five years abroad--about the fine arts of architecture and painting and about the practical arts of agriculture, bureaucracy, and commerce--his stay in Europe remains one of the most important of any American before or since. In the first book to describe and explore the significance of Jefferson's European journey, George Green Shackelford offers the reader an intimate and richly detailed account of what Jefferson saw and how he saw it. In the process, he assesses the influence on Jefferson of such figures as the architect Charles Louis Clérisseau and the artist Maria Cosway.

Illustrated with more than sixty images of the actual places Jefferson visited and described--including both contemporary works and new photographs-- Jefferson's Travels in Europe shows how Jefferson's journeys in France, England, Italy, the Netherlands, and the German Rhineland shaped his intellectual and aesthetic development. Coaxing meaning out of Jefferson's account books and correspondence, and the parallel experiences of other travelers of the day, Shackelford has created a unique document, one that bears "a general resemblance to the book that Thomas Jefferson never wrote, his Notes on Europe."
