Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Gerard of Cremona ( c. 1114–1187), was a Lombard translator of Arabic scientific works found in the abandoned Arab libraries of Toledo, Spain. He was one of a small group of scholars who invigorated medieval Europe in the twelfth century by transmitting Greek and Arab traditions in astronomy, medicine and other sciences, in the form of translations into Latin, which made them available to every literate person in the West. One of his most famous translations is of Ptolemy's Almagest from Arabic texts found in Toledo. Gerard has been mistakenly credited as the translator of Avicenna's Canon of Medicine. ... Read more

Excerpt:Alexios Branas or Alexius Branas (Greek : , died 1187) was a Byzantine nobleman and military leader of the late 12th century. Alexios Branas was doubly linked to the imperial Komnenos family. He was the son of Michael Branas and of Maria Komnene, who was the great-niece of Alexios I Komnenos . He himself married Anna Vatatzaina, the niece of Manuel I Komnenos , and her sister, Theodora, was Manuel's lover. Branas was one of relatively few generals who never rebelled against Andronikos I Komnenos , who rewarded his loyalty by raising him to the exalted rank of protosebastos . Branas led several successful campaigns on his behalf, against the forces of Béla III of Hungary in 1183, against a rebellion led by Andronikos, Isaac and Alexios Angelos in 1184, and against the Norman invaders of Thessalonica under William II of Sicily in 1185. In 1187, shortly after the accession of Isaac II Angelos, Branas was sent to counter the Vlach-Bulgarian Rebellion . This time he did rebel, but was defeated by Conrad of Montferrat , the emperor's brother-in-law, who commanded the centre of the imperial forces in the battle. Branas wounded Conrad, who nevertheless unhorsed him, his lance striking the cheekpiece of his helmet. Branas was then beheaded by Conrad's supporting footsoldiers. The head was taken to the imperial palace, where it was treated like a football, and was then sent to Branas's wife Anna, who (according to the historian Niketa... ... Read more

Excerpt: Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi (15 May 1567 (baptized) 29 November 1643) was an Italian composer, gambist, and singer. Monteverdi's work, often regarded as revolutionary, marked the transition from the Renaissance style of music to that of the Baroque period. He developed two individual styles of composition: the new basso continuo technique of the Baroque and the heritage of Renaissance polyphony. Enjoying fame in his lifetime, he wrote one of the earliest operas, L'Orfeo, which is still regularly performed. Claudio Monteverdi, circa 1597, by an anonymous artist, (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). Excerpt: Ponce de Minerva (1114/5 - 27 July 1175) was a nobleman, courtier, governor, and general serving, at the same and different times, the kingdoms of León and Castile. Originally from Occitania, he came as a young man to León (1127), where he was raised probably in close connexion to the royal family. His public career, first as a courtier and knight in the military retinue of Alfonso VII of León and Castile, began in 1140. By later historians he was implicated in the strife between Alfonso's successors, Sancho III of Castile and Ferdinand II of León, but he was generally loyal to the latter, although from 1168 to 1173 he was in voluntary exile serving Alfonso VIII of Castile. Ponce had a long and distinguished military career. He participated in at least twelve campaigns, more than half of them campaigns of Reconquista fought against the Moors, but also campaigns against Navarre (1140), Portugal (1141), and Castile (1162 and 1163), as well as one famous campaign against some Castilian rebels, in which he was captured.
