Excerpt: Ruth Benedict (born Ruth Fulton, June 5, 1887September 17, 1948) was an American anthropologist and folklorist. She was born in New York City, and attended Vassar College, graduating in 1909. She entered graduate studies at Columbia University in 1919, studying under Franz Boas, receiving her PhD and joining the faculty in 1923. Margaret Mead, with whom she may have shared a romantic relationship, and Marvin Opler were among her students and colleagues. Franz Boas, her teacher and mentor, has been called the father of American anthropology and his teachings and point of view are clearly evident in Benedict's work. From the supplier: Eugenics, the concept of improving humans by selective breeding, was first used by the biologist Francis Galton in 1883, and William Morris would incorporate that concept into his book, 'News from Nowhere, or an Epoch of Rest: Being some Chapters from a Utopian Romance.' Utopias tend to combine mental satisfactions with physical beauty, and Morris's Nowhere reflected his concern for collecting data on places with attractive people.

Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Francis Galton," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Francis Galton in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Francis Galton when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Francis Galton, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt:The 2006 European cold wave was an unusual cold wave which resulted in abnormal winter conditions over much of Europe. This marked a period of unusual weather over much of Europe where southern Europe saw cold and snow while places in northern Norway saw abnormally mild conditions. The phenomenon started on January 20 in Russia with temperatures below -40°C and extended to Central Europe. Parts of Poland , Slovakia , and Austria saw temperatures drop below -30°C. The cold had resulted in the deaths of up to 50 people in Russia and a significant death toll in both in most of Eastern Europe including Moldova and Romania. A final death toll may be in the region of around 200 deaths in Europe. The abnormal conditions gradually abated towards the end of the month. Temperatures recorded during the cold snap Near freezing temperatures were also noted in the Balearic Islands , Western North Africa , and in extreme southern Spain. Snow in southern Europe The anticyclone responsible for the cold temperatures in Central Europe brought snow to much of southern Europe. Algiers saw their first snow in over forty years and the snow had brought about icy and slippery conditions on the roads catching many off guard. Much of Greece also saw snow and Athens had a significant fall of snow and the snow had cut off more remote outlying areas and the island of Limnos also saw measurable snow. The Balearic Islands saw snow and freezing temperatures which resulted in closure of the airport on Majorca . On January 29th, snow fell in Lisbon for the first t... ... Read more

Excerpt: Sir Francis Galton FRS (16 February 1822 17 January 1911), cousin of Sir Douglas Galton, half-cousin of Charles Darwin, was an English Victorian polymath, anthropologist, eugenicist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist, proto-geneticist, psychometrician, and statistician. He was knighted in 1909. Galton had a prolific intellect, and produced over 340 papers and books throughout his lifetime. He also created the statistical concept of correlation and widely promoted regression toward the mean. He was the first to apply statistical methods to the study of human differences and inheritance of intelligence, and introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys for collecting data on human communities, which he needed for genealogical and biographical works and for his anthropometric studies. He was a pioneer in eugenics, coining the very term itself and the phrase "nature versus nurture." His book, Hereditary Genius (1869), was the first social scientific attempt to study genius and greatness. As an investigator of the human mind, he founded psychometrics (the science of measuring mental faculties) and differential psychology. He devised a method for classifying fingerprints that proved useful in forensic science. As the initiator of scientific meteorology, he devised the first weather map, proposed a theory of anticyclones, and was the first to establish a complete record of short-term climatic phenomena on a European scale. He also invented the Galton Whistle for testing differential hearing ability. He was born at "The Larches", a large house in Sparkbrook, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, built on the site ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=49072 ... Read more

Product Description
1907. Galton, an explorer and anthropologist, is known for his pioneering studies of human intelligence. Influenced by the work of his cousin Charles Darwin, he coined the term eugenics (from the Greek eugenes or wellborn) and devoted the latter part of life to applying Darwinian science to develop theories about heredity and good or noble birth. This book combines his various memoirs into a single volume the object of which he explains in the Introduction: My general object has been to take note of the varied hereditary faculties of different men, and of the great differences in different families and races, to learn how far history may have shown the practicability of supplanting inefficient human stock by better strains, and to consider whether it might not be our duty to do so by such efforts as may be reasonable, thus exerting ourselves to further the ends of evolution more rapidly and with less distress than if events were left to their own course. ...
