Product Description

Product Description
This richly illustrated book, published to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, reveals the appearances of main and 'second lead' characters in this drama, retraces the dense correspondence between friends and enemies, the debate in clergymen and scholars' circles, the gestation of fundamental works in the story of scientific and philosophical thought, the sorrows of Galileo, "divine man" condemned to pay with humiliation and solitude for the privilege of forever changing the ways of Knowledge and Man's concept of himself and the Universe. In this book, enthralling like a novel, but accurate like a treatise, Sergio Pagano tells us the true story of Galileo's drama, from the glory and acknowledgements for his inventions and discoveries, through early charges of heresy and the prohibition, by Cardinal Bellarmino, to assert and propagate Copernicus' theories, onto the trial, the abjuration and the death of Galileo, after years of confinement and dejection, to ascend thereafter into the Olympus of Science's Heroes and have his greatness finally acknowledged. ... Product Description
From dust jacket notes: "In every age there are courageous people who break with tradition to explore new ideas and challenge accepted truths. Galileo Galilei was just such a man - a genius - and the first to turn the telescope to the skies to map the heavens. In doing so, he offered objective evidence that the earth was not the fixed center of the universe but that it and all the other planets revolved around the sun....In his amazing new book, Peter Sis employs the artist's lens to give us an extraordinary view of the life of Galileo Galilei. Sis tells his story in language as simple as a fairy tale, in pictures as rich and tightly woven as a tapestry, an in Galileo's own words, written more than 350 years ago and still resonant with truth." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem!
World Geography, World History, Science... and some creative fictional characters as well! All in a beautiful information Picture Book.

The story of the legendary Leaning Tower of Pizza experiment by Galileo is brought to life here around the story of a boy, Massimo, who was very clever, and dropped his father's lunch from a bridge everyday in calculating motions... until a passer-by professor named Galileo witnesses it and rethinks the whole Aristotelian notion on the subject!

The pictures are colorful, warm and very pleasant, and some of the angles are taken from delightful perspectives!

A gem. A very nice way to introduce children to Galileo and to some concepts of Physics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Really Can Be Fun!
Young Massimo drops a loaf of bread and a wheel of cheese to his uncle as he passes below the town bridge. One day a man asks him how he gets them both to land in the boat at the exact same time.Massimo isn't sure, just that it happens. He learns that the man's name is Galileo, and Galileo wonders how Aristotle could be wrong, thus setting the scene for a budding relationship between a teacher and a budding pupil.

This is a fictionalized version of Galileo proving Aristotle wrong, but the note at the back of the book tells how it was rumored that "Galileo dropped weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa" (32).The note at the back of the book tells you what year the story is set in, the age of Galileo in the book and other information on his experiments. One of the best parts is the tiny print at the very bottom of the last page: "A note about education in the 1500s: For a bright farm boy to go to school was possible, but very unusual.Only the wealthy (and only boys) typically went to the university" (32).

For teachers, this could be a great introduction to a science unit on speed, gravity, distance, time or even the man himself!

Notes on the Cover:
It's a nice cover with Galileo and Massimo looking out over the side of the bridge.Of course, it could be the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but it's the wrong color. The point is that the bridge is an important feature of the story, but you don't know that's where they're standing unless you read the book.Minus points for that part!

Product Description
This is the acclaimed translation by Stillman Drake of "Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Concerning Two New Sciences Pertaining to Mechanics and Local Motions." It is the work written by Galileo in the last years of his life, while under house arrest by the Inquisition for suspected heresy. The two new sciences that comprise the subject of the book are the science of motion on earth and the study of the strength of materials. In presenting his findings, Galileo formulates a methodology for rigorous experimental study of natural phenomena that is the foundation for modern experimental science.

History of Free Fall, by Stillman Drake

Appended to Drake's translation and commentaries and bound in with them in the same volume is his monograph History of Free Fall: Aristotle to Galileo on the history of the discovery of the law of falling bodies, from its formulation by Aristotle to its clear statement by Galileo. Drake's painstaking research includes a close examination of Galileo's working papers which record his famous experiments with inclined planes and carefully controlled parabolic projectile paths. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The authoritative edition Galileo's masterpiece
Very briefly: this book is the authoritative English translation of Galileo's masterpiece, after a long history of notoriously poor and incomplete translations. Some people have apparently had problems with the binding. I have had no such problems. My copy is well-worn from study, and the pages are still securely in the binding.

Galileo's Two New Sciences (originally: Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche, intorno a due nuove scienze) was first published in Italian in 1638. However, the publication was rushed at the end -- Galileo had gone blind, and would die a few years later in 1642. So many pieces that Galileo intended for publication, and which he dictated to his students at the end, didn't make it into print. Most English translations have been based on a (1914) edition which was missing these pieces.

Fortunately, the translation that Drake has produced in this book is based on a complete edition of Galileo's original Italian work, put together by Antonio Favaro (Le Opere di Galileo Galilei, 1898, Edizione Nazionale, Florence). The page-numbers of the Italian edition are included in this edition by Drake, for easy cross-referencing to Galileo's original language. Many of Galileo's manuscript notes have also been included as footnotes.

In addition, Drake has revised many of the faulty English translations here. As a historian and philosopher of science, Drake has shown in many places that these faulty translations have at times led to incorrect and incoherent interpretations of Galileo's work. These mistakes have been corrected in the present edition.

All in all, this book is a great purchase. First, it's a masterpiece, and a must-read for all philosophers and scientists. Second, it's the most authoritative English translation, designed for both students and scholars. It's hard not to thoroughly enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Galileo's Two New Sciences
The book arrived in a very good condition and in a very short time, just as it was supposed to; so I can only say that everything went fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Caution- The Binding is Terrible on This Book
The "Two New Sciences" are required study at Thomas Aquinas College in California. I and a number of students have this paperback edition. The pages come loose and just keep coming loose as you study the propositions.Even being very careful with the book, the pages still keep coming out.I have heard a number of other people complain of this same problem.

Pretty much everyone here knows that the paperback edition falls apart and they only buy it since it is cheaper than the hardback.I have no idea how the pages hold up on the hardback edition, but I hear that it is better than with the paperback. So unless you intend to put it in a display case and read it from there, I urge you to skip the paperback version and get the hardback or get another publishing entirely (if such exists) until Wall & Emerson gets their act together and republishes this book, fixing the problem.I rate two stars only because of the greatness of the text itself, subtracting three for the horrible binding. ... Product Description

The historical and social implications of the telescope and that instrument’s modern-day significance are brought into startling focus in this fascinating account. When Galileo looked to the sky with his perspicillum, or spyglass, roughly 400 years ago, he could not have fathomed the amount of change his astonishing findings—a seemingly flat moon magically transformed into a dynamic, crater-filled orb and a large, black sky suddenly held millions of galaxies—would have on civilizations. Reflecting on how Galileo’s world compares with contemporary society, this insightful analysis deftly moves from the cutting-edge technology available in 17th-century Europe to the unbelievable phenomena discovered during the last 50 years, documenting important astronomical advances and the effects they have had over the years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful to read
On the 400th anniversary of the telescope, the authors weave a history of Galileo and his revolutionary tool with up-to-date science of the cosmos. The blend makes for a fascinating read.Just enought technical to put you in awe, but sensible enough that all - science types and art types - will thoroughly enjoy the acquisition of heavenly knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tying together history and modern science
There have been a great many books about Galileo in recent years, starting with Dava Sobel's Galileo's Daughter. What makes this book different is that it ties Galileo's earliest discoveries to what modern science knows about the Universe today. Co-authors Stephen Maran and Lawrence Marschall are well equipped to tell this story, with Maran having spent 35 year with NASA and Marschall having taught astronomy, physics, and science writing for many years as well.

The book is organized around a series of topics dealing with the instruments and the objects of astronomy. Chapter one gives us a brief summary of Galileo's life, and the age in which he lived. Chapter two deals with telescope, and succeeding chapters start with Earth's Moon, and from there, take us to the Sun, the planets, and beyond. Each chapter tells two stories: First, what was known about the topic in the ages of Galileo, and what Galileo added to that knowledge, and second, what science has discovered since then. This narrative style does an excellent job of illustrating Galileo's place in the historical narrative of astronomy, and helps the reader to better understand how pivotal Galileo's role was in explaining the Universe around us.

If this book has one fault, it's the lack of illustrations. It's very difficult to explain how a telescope works, or the arrangement of the planets, with text alone- particularly for the reader unfamiliar with astronomy. I think this book would be greatly improved with the addition of simple line drawings and star charts, and I would encourage the publishers to consider doing this in future editions. ... Read more

Product Description
Widely recognized as a classic account of the circumstances, issues, and consequences of Galileo's tragic confrontation with the theologians, Galileo, Science and the Church is now available in a sewn, clothbound edition for the first time in more than thirty years.Langford's book is cited in much of the Galileo literature of the past three decades, and it has been in print continuously since 1971 in paperback. It is used in courses at numerous colleges and universities. The present text is the third edition, updated and expanded with a survey of the most important advances in recent Galileo studies. In it, Langford assesses the validity of his own account while making the modifications dictated by recent scholarship. Once again, the author makes clear that this timeless drama has much to teach us about the enduring conflict between authority and the freedom of thought and expression. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The popular story vs the actual
Langford is even-handed and doesn't withhold criticism of academia and the Catholic Church for its handling of Galileo and his books.

What I was taught by public school and the popular press:
The Catholic Church persecuted Galileo because he asserted the Earth revolved around the Sun, and was threatened with torture and death.Copernicus delayed publishing his theory for fear of persecution from the Church, finally publishing it on his deathbed in 1543.

What Langford convincingly shows from research into primary documents:
The Catholic Church was more receptive to the heliocentric theory than the universities.Pope Clement requested a hearing of Copernicus' theory in the Vatican gardens, and was "quite favorably impressed" with the theory.Copernicus was afraid of persecution from his peers, the universities, not the Catholic Church. His fears were well founded, as Galileo discovered years later.Galileo received the full weight of academic condemnation and ridicule for daring to buck the Ptolemic status quo. When professors realized peer pressure wouldn't silence Galileo, they turned to the Church for help.Fortunately, a good portion of the Church was behind Galileo. The head of one Jesuit college wrote to Galileo to say that his astronomers and mathematicians had confirmed his theory, but wanted more proof.Galileo's efforts were further encouraged by Pope Urban. His first trial resulted in being admonished not to teach it as fact, but was welcome to teach it as theory.Unfortunately, by the time of his second trial in 1633, he had managed to alienate his support, partly by insisting his theory be taught as fact. One of his proofs was tides--he believed they were cause by the Earth sloshing the oceans. He also insisted on circular orbits, and refused to consider Kepler's calculations on elliptical orbits, which would have corrected errors he and others found in his model. He was tried a second time for teaching the theory as fact, not for teaching the theory. He was never tortured or shown a dungeon. His house arrest consisted of a five-room apartment with a servant at his disposal, and was free to roam Rome while awaiting trial. After the trial, he was released.True he was threatened with imprisonment, but at his age, Langford asserts, both he and the court officials knew it would not be carried out; the sentence would have been mitigated.

No, this does not excuse the Catholics Church's behavior, but this history should considered with both sides of the argument.

In short, Galileo and Copernicus were treated by the academia in much the same way they treat new ideas today. For an explanation of why the geo-centric theory isn't Biblical in principle or origin, read Sampson'sSix Modern Myths.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short Review
I really enjoyed reading this book. This book is mainly about Galileo's theory of universe and the trial of Galileo which was caused by his conflict with the Catholic Church. This book also talks about Galileo's life briefly. I learned about theories that influenced Galileo's ideas and his opinion toward Copernicus's theory which stated that the all of the planets, including the earth, revolved around the sun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, insightful read
This is a brief, well balanced account of the conflict between Galileo and the Church. It opens with an insightful look at the world view and astronomy of the late 1500's, including a detailed look at the role of Scripture in these views. This is followed with a thorough description of Galileo's life and how his conflict with the church unfolded. The final chapter is a fascinating overview of the relationships between faith, science and philosophy since Galileo's time. It's not overly difficult reading, though it deals with science, theology and philosophy. The book is a fair account, looking at the strengths and weaknesses of Galileo and some Church officials in how they approached the issues. It also critiques some long held cultural assumptions about the causes, events and meaning of this case (ex: Galileo was never tortured; some lower Church officials who disliked Galileo gave the Pope misleading reports, etc).Definitely worth reading!! ...
