Product Description
The Legacy of Freudenthal pays homage to Freudenthal andhis work on mathematics, its history and education. Almost all authorswere his scholars or co-workers. They testify to what they learnedfrom him. Freudenthal himself contributes posthumously. His didacticalphenomenology of the concept of force is both provocative andrevealing in its originality, compared with what is usually found inphysics instruction.
Freudenthal is portrayed as a universal human being by Josette Adda.He made considerable contributions to mathematics itself, e.g. onhomotopy theory and Lie groups in geometry. The exposition ofFreudenthal's mathematical life and work is on Van Est's account. HenkBos discusses his historical work. The essay review of the 8th editionof Hilbert'sGrundlagen der Geometrie serves as a vehicle ofthought. The main part of the book, however, concerns Freudenthal'swork on mathematics education. Christine Keitel reviews his final bookRevisiting Mathematics Education (1991). Fred Goffree describesFreudenthal's `Working on Mathematics Education' both from anhistorical as well as a theoretical perspective. Adrian Treffersanalyses Freudenthal's influence on the development of realisticmathematics education at primary level in the Netherlands, especiallyhis influence on the Wiskobas-project of the former IOWO. Freudenthalonce predicted the disappearance of mathematics as an individualsubject in education sometime around the year 2000, because it wouldby then have merged with integrated thematic contexts. Jan de Langeanticipates this future development and shows that Freudenthal'sprediction will not come true after all. Reflective interludes unveilhow he might have influenced those developments.
Freudenthal contributed a wealth of ideas and conceptual tools to thedevelopment of mathematics education -- on contexts, didacticalphenomenology, guided reinvention, mathematisation, the constitutionof mental objects, the development of reflective thinking, levels inlearning processes, the development of a mathematical attitude and soon -- but he did not design very much concrete material. LeenStreefland deals with the question of design from a theoretical pointof view, while applying Freudenthal's ideas on changing perspectiveand shifting.
For teachers, researchers, mathematics educators, mathematicians, educationalists, psychologists and policy makers.

If you had some knowledge about Freudenthal's work, you know that the words 'math-observed' has special meanting to him.But this book is not about that.It does NOT about what and how to observe 'math-in-the-making'.Just a little math-tales w/ history of math stuff.I am really wondering why he wrote this book. ... When New math of SMSG swept all western country, Holland is the only one which saved itself frome all the attack and the defensive coordinator was H. Freudenthal.

He tells the math-in-the making from ready-made math and explains all the educational problem of math by the property of math. This is really gem. When all american mathematician and math-educator are indulging in 'how to let students do something' and grading the papers, this giants reavels the ignorance and hypocricy of math education nowadays and shows the future direction. Here are some quotation :

"Mathematicians who design mathematical programmes for schools they do not know and who never dreamt of anything else to be taught at schools than mathematics are of course just as narrow-minded as the computing fanatics"

"A teaching success with an isolated subject may be claimed but it is a cheap success, because any isolated matter can be taught successfully if it is done forcefully, in particular if the subject matter is neither unusually extensive nor profound."

"Besides the future mathematician a great many others must learn mathematics.A mathematician should never forget that mathematics is too important to frame its instruction to suit more or less the needs of future mathematicians."

"The greatest virtue of mathematics is its flexibility.A mathematics tailored to some applications is beside the mark, it fossilizes. While I do not urge that the pupil learns applied mathematics, I do wish that he learns how to apply mathematics. Therefore instead of applied mathematics, I would prefer to speak of 'multi-related' mathematics."

ps. Freudental wrote in Dutch first and translated in English himself. That's why this book is not easy to read in English users. But if you are using English as second language (like me), that cannot be a problem but the 1st chanpter is little bit harder than the rest. You would find yourself more comfortable in 4 or 5 chapters later.I agree this volume is too expensive.Actually, I bought the used one.Fredenthal book is not common in american site. You'd better search UK or other European sites to get one. ... Read more

Product Description
Hans Freudenthal (1905-1990) was a Dutch mathematician, born in Luckenwalde, Germany. His scientific activities were of a rich variety. Enrolling at the University of Berlin as a student in the 1920s, he followed in the footsteps of his teachers and became a topologist, but with a lively interest in group theory. After a long journey through the realm of mathematics, working on almost all subjects that drew his interest, he turned toward the practical and methodological issues of the didactics of mathematics. The present Selecta are devoted to Freudenthal's mathematical oeuvre. They contain a selection of his major contributions, including his fundamental contributions to topology such as the foundation of the theory of ends (in the thesis of 1931) as well as the introduction (in 1937) of the suspension and its use in stability results for homotopy groups of spheres. In group theory there is work on topological groups (of the 1930s) and on various aspects of the theory of Lie groups, such as a paper on automorphisms of 1941. From the later work of the 1950s and 1960s, papers on geometric aspects of Lie theory (geometries associated to exceptional groups, space problems) have been included. Freudenthal's versatility is further demonstrated by selections from his foundational and historical work: papers on intuitionistic logic and topology, a paper on axiomatic geometry reappraising Hilbert's Grundlagen, and a paper summarizing his development of Lincos, a universal (""cosmic"") language. ...
