Product Description
At the beginning of the twentieth century, college algebra was taught differently than it is nowadays. There are many topics that are now part of calculus or analysis classes. Other topics are covered only in abstract form in a modern algebra class on field theory. Fine's College Algebra offers the reader a chance to learn the origins of a variety of topics taught in today's curriculum, while also learning valuable techniques that, in some cases, are almost forgotten. In the early 1900s, methods were often emphasized, rather than abstract principles. In this book, Fine includes detailed discussions of techniques of solving quadratic and cubic equations, as well as some discussion of fourth-order equations. There are also detailed treatments of partial fractions, the method of undetermined coefficients, and synthetic division. The book is ostensibly an algebra book; however, it covers many topics that are found throughout today's curriculum:calculus and analysis: infinite series, partial fractions, undetermined coefficients, properties of continuous functions, number theory: continued fractions, probability: basic results in probability. Though the book is structured as a textbook, modern mathematicians will find it a delight to dip into. There are many gems that have been overlooked by today's emphasis on abstraction and generality. By revisiting familiar topics, such as continued fractions or solutions of polynomial equations, modern readers will enrich their knowledge of fundamental areas of mathematics, while gaining concrete methods for working with their modern incarnations. The book is suitable for undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers interested in algebra. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars William Henry Is A Fine Name...Fantastic Read!!!
This is a brilliant coming of age story which follows thirteen-year-old Robert as he grows up in the pre-Civil War era of the Southern United States.Robert is such an innocent boy who loves his mother, father and his best friend William Henry.Robert's mother Caroline, views slavery as normal and Robert takes this same view as his best friend, William Henry, is a free slave, so Robert's compassion for the slaves is palpable. When he witnesses the atrocity of a slave having his foot axed off, Robert can barely stand-by and watch these things happen and not do anything to help.

His father, Charles, disappears at night and Robert has no idea why or where he is going until he learns that William Henry understands very well what these late night jaunts are all about. But other people consider William Henry a nothing because he is a free black.Robert couldn't figure out "...why a man who worked from dawn till dark as hard as Pa did would want to go traipsing off in the middle of the night. He never took a lantern off the hook..."

As Robert matures and continues to witness the terrible violence the slaves must endure, he realizes he himself must decide how he truly feels about slavery and whether he wants to go against the grain of most of his family members on this issue.

Once Robert learns his father is involved with the Underground Railroad and his mother's opposition to slavery, he realizes that he himself must decide to take a firm stand one way or another and he very soon is presented with the opportunity to find out. But Robert is conflicted between family loyalty and doing what he believes is right.

Cathy's writing ability is nothing short of genius! It is so descriptive that I felt like I was morphed into the pages of the book and was a silent and invisible member of the family watching and listening to what was going on.This is one of the best books I've read in a long while and would highly recommend this to everyone.I am about to begin the second book:"I Have Seen Him In The Watchfires", which continues Robert's story and I'm anticipating it's going to be as good as the first!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of a Christy Award
This is probably the best juvenile Christian fiction I have read from the current generation. The Christy Award for inspirational fiction that it won in the juvenile and young adult category is well deserved. It is a powerful story of a boy torn between his abolitionist father's activities in the Underground Railroad, his Southern Belle mother, and his free colored best friend, William Henry. Robert must reach his own conclusions about the morality of slavery and if and when it is right to break the law. His thinking and spiritual commitment are aided by visiting preacher, Andrew Goforth. Mr. Goforth's dialogue is more 'preachy' than the story as a whole, but not inappropriate to a nineteenth century preacher. Lots of dramatic tension. Slave owners are portrayed as real people, some evil, but some sincere, even as they are mired in their warped worldview. Along with Robert we have to weigh the pros and cons and expose the false reasoning of slave owners. There are scenes of violence and horror appropriate to the subject matter. I wasn't sure I found the motivation for the trip north completely believable on Robert's part, but it was effective in showing the working on the Underground Railroad.

5-0 out of 5 stars William Henry is a Fine Name book review

Set in Maryland prior to the Civil War, this coming of age tale of thirteen-year-old Robert Glover is packed with action, adventure, laughter, and tears. We join Robert and his family at their home in Elkton, Maryland, where his father, Charles, works as overseer on a Quaker farm. Mr. Heath, Charles' employer, freed his slaves, and now pays them to work the land alongside Charles and Robert. Robert's mother Caroline hails from a prominent slave holding family in North Carolina, and loyalties are challenged when The Underground Railroad is nearly discovered in Robert's area.

Many secrets are revealed the summer Robert turns thirteen, including the fact that Mr. Heath and Robert's father work with The Underground Railroad. William Henry, son of freed slaves that work for Mr. Heath, is Robert's best friend. Robert and William Henry grew up together, but until that summer, William Henry has a better idea than Robert of why skin color matters.

Robert also meets his North Carolina relatives that year, which further clarifies his growing convictions concerning slavery. Will Robert step up and fill the shoes his Grandfather wants him to fill as sole heir of the North Carolina family plantation? Or will Robert join his father in the Underground Railroad?

Cathy Gohlke paints an inspiring and realistic portrait of life just prior to the Civil War. Robert's story serves to richly illuminate the past while entertaining the reader. The book's informative and entertaining value will appeal to ages 12-100. It would also be a wonderful teaching tool for those studying American history. This book is a marvelous testimony to the genre of historical fiction. In my opinion, this book is a winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Historical Fiction

Set in pre-Civil War America, this novel weaves the story of a 13-year old boy who enjoyed an innocent life until he became caught in the turmoil of evils he never knew existed. Exposed to the horrors of slavery, Robert Clover must now decide what course of action he is to take. His family is divided on the matter and he wages a battle within himself. And then he makes his choice.
Although this book started out slow, once it got going, I didn't want to put it down! Filled with unexpected twists, quality character development, and a story that will tug on your heart, this isn't a novel to miss.
I will only raise a warning and say this is not a children's story, even if it does revolve around a thirteen-year old.Committed to being historically accurate, it describes some of the atrocities that were caused by slavery.Characters speak of female slaves being violated by their white masters, a married woman flirts with a man other than her husband, and some violent content is scattered throughout the pages. While all these things are handled tactfully and are ultimately exposed as evil, parents still may want to wait for their kids to be a little older before giving them this book.
All that said, this was an entertaining, educational, and moving story. It was personally challenging, heart-wrenching, and caused me to really think.I hope it does the same for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A touching and facinating story.
Cathy Gohlke won the Christy award in 2007 for her first novel, William Henry is a Fine Name. I can't imagine a more deserving story.

Thirteen-year-old Robert Glover loves fishing and skunking and skinny-dipping with his best friend William Henry in Elkton, Maryland, 1859. Life is just as good as it can be, except for the howling dogs that wake him at night, his parents' muffled arguments, and his father's middle-of-the-night disappearances. Robert discovers his father is involved in helping slaves flee the south, and his mother--having grown up on a tobacco plantation in North Carolina--views slavery as a natural part of life.

Robert's mother receives word her father is dying, and she and Robert travel to North Carolina. Robert has never met his grandfather, but once the man is healthy, Robert cannot help but dislike him. He sees cruelty he never imagined on Grandfather's tobacco plantation. Back home, slaves are free, but in North Carolina, they are property. Robert must choose between his parents' differing beliefs, and his grandfather's new affection. He searches to know what is right and what, if anything, he can do about it.

I found this book touching and fascinating. I felt as if I was experiencing the Underground Railroad myself. Robert's character is so real and his journey and growth so powerful, he becomes a friend. I want to read more about his life and the wonderful way he lives it and am thrilled there is a sequel, I Have Seen Him in the Watchfires. I highly recommended this novel.

Product Description
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Byzantine art of the later fifth and the sixth centuries AU. is its fondness for imagery drawn from natural history. Wherever the visitor looks in churches of this period, whether it be to the floors, the walls, the furnishing, or the ceilings and the vaults, there may be representations of birds, beasts, sea creatures, and plants. These motifs from nature raise complex questions of meaning and significance, but often the works of art do not in themselves provide clear answers to these questions, so that the modern viewer is unsure how to interpret them. The aim of this book is to draw on the great wealth of Early Christian literature on natural history incorporated into sermons and commentaries, and to show the connections between this exegetical literature and presentations of nature in art. By studying the parallels between art and literature it is possible to reveal the common patterns of thinking that may have inspired both artists (or their patrons) and writers. Most of the works of art discussed in this book are floor mosaics, but also considered are portrayals of life of the earth and the ocean displayed on walls, vaults, and ceilings. The first of seven chapters contains an introductory discussion of the language of symbolism in early Byzantine art, especially with respect to portrayals of themes from nature. Each of the six subsequent chapters is devoted to a different interpretation of terrestrial nature, as seenboth in art and in literature. The second chapter is concerned with those writers and artists who interpreted the world created by God in an absolutely literal sense, reading no kind of symbolism or allegory into it, and the third chapter with those who interpreted most of Creation literally, but allegorized certain parts of it, so that they saw only some elements of natural history as Christian symbols. The next two chapters treat those who were willing to allegorize the world extensively, imposing elaborate superstructures of symbolic meaning onto the whole scheme of Creation. The sixth chapter is concerned with mosaics and commentaries which gave a moralistic purpose to their views of the earth, by portraying humanity's role in nature. Finally, the seventh chapter shows how portrayals of Earth and Ocean could also have had an imperial significance in early Byzantine art, in the decoration of churches as well as of palaces. ... Product Description
Henry Moore: Ideas for Sculpture sheds new light on the work of Henry Moore (1898-1986), recording the much-admired contemporary architect Zaha Hadid's design of a display environment for the exhibition of Moore's sculptures and drawings. Hadid and Moore share a proclivity for fluid organic form, and for this project Hadid created curvaceous white linen walls and a giant horseshoe-shaped plinth. This volume collects the documentation of this adventurous installation, presenting reproductions of sculptures and sketches by Moore alongside Mary Moore's detailed account of their conception. It also includes an essay on the exhibition by writer and television presenter Matthew Collings, and a text by art historian Ann Wagner about Moore's works on paper, many of which were exhibited here for the first time. Ideas for Sculpture provides fresh perspective on the oeuvre of the late master, whose creative vision and presence in public life were key to the reception of modernity in England. ... Read more

Product Description
Henry James (1843-1916) was an important commentator on the cultural life of 19th century Boston, Paris and London. This collection of fifty six of his critical essays and reviews includes critiques of exhibitions and collections of the works of such artists as Rousseau, Delacroix, Turner and Sargent. The essays, some of which have never produced or have been unavailable for some time, are arranged chronologically. They chart the development of James's own aesthetic attitudes but, more significantly, reveal much about the evaluative criteria that formed the basis for 19th century criticism in general. As a result they form a body of work for art historians concerned with this period's appraisal of its own artistic trends and those of previous generations. ... Read more

Product Description
The Fine Rolls were the earliest rolls kept by the English royal chancery. Recording offers of money to the king for all manner of concessions and favours, they are central to the study of political, governmental, legal, social and economic history. The reign of Henry III (1216-1272) is a particularly rich period for surviving documents; there are some 56 rolls preserved in the National Archives, one for each regnal year. However, despite the light they shed on politics, government, and society, they have never previously been properly edited or published, and these fully-indexed volumes - covering the period up to 1248 - will therefore be widely welcomed. The Latin rolls are presented in English translation, with all identifiable place-names modernised, although the original forms are preserved; and each volume includes full person, place and subject indexes. This volume covers in some detail the first phase of Henry's personal rule, which began in 1234. The rolls provide key evidence both for the great reform of the realm following Henry's marriage to Eleanor of Provence in 1236 and for the concessions by which Henry encouraged participation in his Poitevin campaign of 1242. In two years when fine rolls are missing the volume prints originalia rolls (copies of the fine rolls sent to the Exchequer) in their place, thus enabling detailed examination of the processes by which the king raised his revenue. ... Product Description
The Huntington in San Marino, California, is one of the world's foremost collections of books, art and flora. Set in park-like grounds and a Beaux-Arts mansion built in the early 1900s, the Huntington boasts some of the rarest and most valuable artifacts on Earth from the Gutenberg Bible on vellum, the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, Shakespeare's folios and more than a million other rare books, to great works of art including Gainsborough's "Blue Boy," Lawrence's "Pinkie," Mary Cassatt's "Breakfast in Bed" and John Singer Sargent's "Portrait of Pauline-Astor." Rolling lawns, color-splashed gardens abound; one might regard the Huntington as the closest place on Earth to Eden. Perhaps this is a manifestation of Henry Edward Huntington and his wife Arabella's love and interest in books and art; they were inveterate collectors who devoted much of their life and wealth to amassing these incomparable collections. Henry Huntington's story also encompasses the evolution of Los Angeles into a megapolis. His Pacific Electric Railway had 900 red and yellow trolley cars crisscrossing Southern California on more than 1,100 miles of track. He owned other street railway systems, railroads, vast swaths of real estate and sat on the boards of many of Los Angeles' and San Francisco's largest concerns. Award-winning author Daniel Alef's biographical profile of Henry E. Huntington is the story of a man who achieved great success, retained his moral compass and left a wonderful legacy, one he was determined to share with the public.
