5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Motivation & Inspiration: John Maclean Is The Real Deal
this book is the amazing story of a man who refused to give up.
An accident that would send most into a deep depression turned him into the person he is today. How many other people can say that they have completed the Hawaiian Ironman, swam the English Channel, kayaked around the Hawaiian islands, Competed at the Sydney Olympic Games and that is just to name 4. Oh yeah - he did all this from a wheelchair.

Amazing man. A must read. ... Read more

Written by two leading workers in the field, this brief but elegant book presents in full detail the simplest proof of the "main conjecture" for cyclotomic fields. Its motivation stems not only from the inherent beauty of the subject, but also from the wider arithmetic interest of these questions.

Product Description
"I awakened early on Friday morning, November 22, 1963.The day was gray and somber.Rain was falling...I asked John if I could ride with him to Dallas, and his reply was 'certainly.'We got in the jump seats right behind the driver and secret service man in the front.I was on the driver's side.Mrs. Kennedy was behind me.The President sat directly behind John.We were a happy foursome.I had my yellow roses; Jackie had red ones.I turned to the President as the formation of cars turned onto Elm Street and said, ' Mr. President, you certainly cannot say that Dallas does not love you.'"

Nellie Connally, wife of the late governor of Texas John Connally, shares her personal diary of the JFK assassination. While a seminal document in our nation's history-the original document is to be archived at the University of Texas-From Love Field is, at heart, one woman's account of a personal tragedy.Written for her children and grandchildren forty years ago in November 1963, the diary details what it took as a wife, mother, and friend to cope with an unimaginable personal and public ordeal.

With the twenty-six-page original document expertly reproduced in its entirely and an additional narrative detailing the days before and after the fatal shots, From Love Field also includes many major newsbreaking revelations that further delineate Mrs. Connally's longstanding dispute of the Warren Commission's findings.

Along with Mickey Herskowitz, a longtime family friend and coauthor of John Connally's autobiography In History's Shadow, Nellie Connally has, at last, broken her silence and given the country a personal point of view of the most controversial and disturbing chapter in its history.

5-0 out of 5 stars "An Amazing Piece of History"
There have been a plethora of books written on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, but none are as good or informative as Nellie Connally's "From Love Field: Our Final Hours With John F. Kennedy". What the reader gets is a book actually written by someone who was in the motorcade with the President and his wife on that fateful day in Dallas on Novemeber 22, 1963. Nellie heard and saw the events that led up to the President's death and its aftermath. Nellie wrote down on paper what happened just days after the assassination so she and her future relatives could get an account on one of the most horrific days in American history. She recounts the shots she heard, what she had said to John Kennedy just moments before he was killed, how she covered her husband with her own body when he (John Connolly-the Governor of Texas) was shot himself, and her image of the blood that was shattered over the red and yellow roses in that motorcade and how that image will stay with her for life.

Nellie Connally has written an exceptional book on one of the most tragic days that befell the United States. Not just for historians, the book is for the average, every day person who would like to know what happened on that cool November day. I am sure going back was both an emotional and physical roller-coaster ride for Mrs. Connally, so she should be applauded for her effort and her work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling insight into that horrible day
I find this book wonderfully written by Mrs Connolly and a never before seen insight into what happened that day. As the (then) only surviving member of that car, it was something that is much appreciated to hear what her opinion was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meeting the gracious and beautiful Nellie Connally
My husband and I had the opportunity yesterday to get our copy of "From Love Field" signed by Mrs. Nellie Connally. What a treat! She is so elegant and eloquent, and gracious to all of her fans. She spoke personably with every single person in line and made everyone feel like they were of interest to her.I started reading her book as soon as I got in the car, and read straight through til I finished it.It is a wonderful book, exactly what you would expect from someone who lived through that horrible day.I got exactly what I expected to get from reading it, and even more.I especially appreciated the speeches that President Kennedy wasn't able to give being reproduced in the book. This is a book I will always cherish, along with meeting this great Texan, Mrs. Nellie Connally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Honest
Of the many volumes on the subject, I find this book to be the best.Told with charm and grace, Nellie Connally relates the events of November 22, 1963 as only an occupant of that ill-fated Presidential Lincoln could.Devoid of conjecture or theories, we are simply presented with the facts. The Connally's viewpoint from the jumpseats is sobering. Pivotal moments, from Mrs. Connally's last words to President Kennedy to Governor Connally' near fatal wounds to Oswald's emergency room visit after the Jack Ruby shooting are covered in a comfortable format; making one feel that Mrs. Connally is relating the events to you personally.Thank-You, Mrs. Connally.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Mrs. Connally
The former First Lady of Texas takes an infamous blot on our history, an event that quite literally changed the world for generations to come, and put it in completely human terms. This is what happened to her and her family. This is how she remembers it. What's more, it's how she experienced it -- from both the front seat of the Lincoln Continental and the corridors of Parkland Hospital. This makes it an invaluable historical record, and a moving account written by a woman who had been fired upon in an open car and held her bleeding husband in her arms. Perhaps it is "slight." I would not have wanted her to embellish or alter her memories of those tragic days just to accommodate readers who measure a book's worth by the number of pages. I did not consider the photographs, the reproduction of her notes nor President Kennedy's undelivered speeches "filler." They lent texture and veracity to her story. And I do not see how anyone can say there is nothing "new" here. She is the only one of those three surviving passengers who discussed what happened at this length with the public. That in and of itself is "new." I appreciate this lady's gallantry and her generosity in contributing her family's history to our country's history. And I was also moved by her son John's recollections of the funeral. It was poignant to read a man nearing 60 recalling the awe, pagentry and pain he experienced while still a teen. ... Read more

Product Description
Although he has largely receded from the public consciousness, John Mitchell Jr., the editor and publisher of the Richmond Planet, was well known to many black, and not a few white, Americans in his day. A contemporary of Booker T. Washington, Mitchell contrasted sharply with Washington in temperament. In his career as an editor, politician, and businessman, Mitchell followed the trajectory of optimism, bitter disappointment, and retrenchment that characterized African American life in the Reconstruction and Jim Crow South.

Best known for his crusade against lynching in the 1880s, Mitchell was also involved in a number of civil rights crusades that seem more contemporary to the 1950s and 1960s than the turn of that century. He led a boycott against segregated streetcars in 1904 and fought residential segregation in Richmond in 1911. His political career included eight years on the Richmond city council, which ended with disenfranchisement in 1896.

As Jim Crow strengthened its hold on the South, Mitchell, like many African American leaders, turned to creating strong financial institutions within the black community. He became a bank president and urged Planet readers to comport themselves as gentlemen, but a year after he ran for governor in 1921, Mitchell's fortunes suffered a drastic reversal. His bank failed, and he was convicted of fraud and sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary. The conviction was overturned on technicalities, but the so-called reforms that allowed state regulation of black businesses had done their worst, and Mitchell died in poverty and some disgrace.

Basing her portrait on thorough primary research conducted over several decades, Ann Field Alexander brings Mitchell to life in all his complexity and contradiction, a combative, resilient figure of protest and accommodation who epitomizes the African American experience in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good career advice
This book answered a lot of my questions and even some that I didn't even know I had. It helped me make some important decisions concerning my future. I'd suggest it to anyone looking for a career in this field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative...
I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into law enforcement careers that I might be interested in.It did have some information that was good, although the book does have a decidedly "Federal" spin; more than half the book is dedicated to Federal agencies, but this is to be expected since Mr. Douglas is a former FBI agent. The book does contain very general information, although I was hoping for more tips and advice that a person could use in order to pursue a law enforcement career, other than wavetop overviews of several different agencies, most of which a reader could gain through visiting the websites for those agencies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Find out the same information online for free
This book is very general in nature. Most of the book is fluffed up with detailed descriptions and history of city departments that you will never apply too. As far as his more extensive knowledge on federal agencies like the ATF, DEA, FBI, CIA, this book's information is dated in salary scale and half of the requirements listed to obtain the position. He fluffs up the book even more by using the first chapter to scare away those people that should not become officers. All and all, I learned a little bit from this book, but if I took a brief few minutes online, I could have easily found more in depth information for free, without the dated material, from a man the has RECENTLY been a law enforcement officer.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth the money
Although much of the information in this book is available on the internet, you can't find it unless you know what your looking for. This book covers a very broad range of federal, State and local law enforcement organizations, from the well known to obscure. Each having a small 2-10 page section on the agencies history, positions and duties, and requirements for employment. Some examples of organizations covered are the FBI, DEA, ATF, Bostan PD, and also smaller ones like Department of State Security, ICE, and Park Rangers. Yes they have special agents too. Of course if you know which agencies interest you then definitly find a more specialized book. But if your like me and want a more general preview then this is a well spent 15$.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Money!
This book includes some of the best information on choosing a career in law enforcement that I've ever seen. John Douglas knows what he is talking about and has done a great deal of research to supplement his vast knowledge of law enforcement. It's easy for anyone to understand and is a quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering a career in law enforcement and is just not sure which angle they want to start their career from. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We Need More Northern Whitetail Books
As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it.So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice For Any Deer Hunter
It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it.When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.

Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Ozoga Whitetail Intrigue
I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements.Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read. ... Read more

Product Description
This is an introduction to the basic tools of mathematicsneeded to understand the relation between knot theory and quantumgravity. The book begins with a rapid course on manifolds anddifferential forms, emphasizing how these provide a proper languagefor formulating Maxwell's equations on arbitrary spacetimes. Theauthors then introduce vector bundles, connections and curvature inorder to generalize Maxwell theory to the Yang-Mills equations. Therelation of gauge theory to the newly discovered knot invariants suchas the Jones polynomial is sketched. Riemannian geometry is thenintroduced in order to describe Einstein's equations of generalrelativity and show how an attempt to quantize gravity leads tointeresting applications of knot theory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite text of all time (so far)
This book should be at the top of anyone's reading list who is planning to get into serious mathematical physics. It deals with a good deal of complex material, but the presentation is easy to follow, and shouldn't be beyond most advanced undergraduates. There are a lot of good exercises which fill in most of the gaps. (If you want a book heavy on detail, this book may not be for you.If you want a book that gives you all the tools you're going to need to get start understanding quantum gravity and other areas in a short time, get this book immediately!)It's a shame the paperback edition doesn't seem to be available anymore; it's half the price, and checking with the publisher reveals that the paperback edition is still in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book !
Covers many topics in Mathematical Physics with great clarity. Highly recommended for those who are interested in a modern approach to Mathematical Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect

Compact enough to bring with you anywhere. The only thing it fails at isdicing a proper tomato.

Discussion of the precise nature of the Information System discipline has raged for more than twenty years and continues fiercely today. The most interesting aspect of recent debate is not only the sharpness and depth of the arguments, but the diverse conclusions arrived at by participants. Edited by two of the most prominent academics in the field, this book brings together such perspectives along with wider contextual discussion to provide a fertile ground for reflection, learning and further debate. ... Product Description

Despite being the most capable cavalry leader of his generation, Sir John French has always aroused controversy. Posterity has judged him an unfeeling butcher, responsible for more deaths in the first two hours of the battle of Loos than all the casualties on both sides in the 1944 D-Day landings. But French has another side, revealed in his private papers—a side filled with affairs and personal torment. An esteemed Professor of Military and Security Studies tells French’s compelling, dramatic story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor FM French!!
I thought the author did a very good job on a very forgotten man. FM French is a classic example of the Wrong Man at the wrong place , wrong time and with the wrong job. In my humble opinion he was born about 50 years too late. If he had died at the end of the Boer War. Then I think that History would of been more kind to him. But none the less, I can say that could of anyone else of done a better job than he at the start of WWI? He could have lost the entire BEF at Mons or on the Retreat from Mons. And yes he was very cautious at the Marne but he had the only real British Army in the world under his command. But could of any one else realistically done better? Especially against one of the best trained and led Armies of the World? I think that Haig would have done a lost worst & Allenby was too junior and inexperienced in Modern War at the time. Later on he (Allenby) would literally kick the Ottoman Empire to death. I would also argue the same for the Battle of Loos and his handling of Ireland.
As to his failings of keeping it in his pockets. In those days "Rank hath its priviledges" had real meaning for his class. Today it would probadly lead to a cashiering of his commission. So I shall refrain from judging with 21 Century standards a basically Edwardian Officer.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Colorful Life of a Forgotten General
Richard Holmes' well-written and often fascinating biography, "The Little Field Marshal", is the life of Sir John French, once one of Britain's foremost soldiers but now largely forgotten.French had the misfortune to be the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force in the difficult opening year of the First World War, a role that Holmes makes clear he was poorly suited for.

French entered the British Army in 1852.His service in uniform would span the half century that marked the apogee of the British Empire and the beginning of its decline, and Holmes's biography is to some degree a portrait of the times as well as of his subject.French was a hardworking young officer who earned a battlefield reputation as a courageous and dashing cavalry commander in Sudan and South Africa. The honors he earned in the Boer War, and the favor of various patrons, would propell French to the very top of the British military establishment. He would be the obvious first choice to command Britain's Army on the continent in 1914.

As Holmes makes clear, French, a superb leader of men and a loyal officer of the crown, was poorly suited to the challenges of high command. He never mastered staff work, was often politically naive, undisciplined in his personal life, and too emotional for his own good.He made many friends and many enemies, and adapted indifferently to the demands of coalition generalship under the stalemated conditions of 1914-1915.Holmes successfully redeems him from the "General Blimp" stereotype of history but reveals him as a good officer of the Empire who outlived his times.

"The Little Field Marshal" provides some fascinating insights into the politics of the British Army in the first years of the 20th Century, and into the handling of the "Irish problem" and the struggle over home rule.

This book is highly recommended to students of the First World War and of the history of the British Army

5-0 out of 5 stars reevaluation of reputation of high British officer
Field Marshall John French got a poor reputation in his own day when British troops he commanded were slaughtered in the first two hours of the World WAr I battle of Loos. His controversial term as Viceroy in Ireland during the time of the "Troubles" there did nothing to improve his reputation. Scandals in his personal life involving a series of mistresses, including the wife of a fellow officer, only further tarnished his name. Holmes does not find any grounds for elevating French's reputation. What he does is add a new dimension to this historical character by relating French's torments over the large number of deaths resulting from his leadership in the First World War along with the general carnage of the War. These concerns that dogged French are found mostly in his private papers, creating discordance between his public image as an unfeeling military leader and his private reflections. Holmes concludes that "in many respects, [French] never transcended the nineteenth century." By temperament, training, class, and expectations of himself and his peers, French was unable to effectively come to grips with either military or political problems of the early 20th century.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair portrayal of a much maligned General
This book is plainly baised toward its subject, Sir John French, and is very much like an official biography. However, it does has its merits in showing that French was not the bloodthirsty, uncaring, blundering stereotype as exemplified by his more infamous contemprorary, Douglas Haig. In the book French was seen to be much depressed by the casaulties of war, and unfairly intrigued against by a whole bunch of unsavoury characters behind his back, like Kitchener, Ian Hamilton,. Haig, Robertson and other assorted incompetents who tried, only too successfully, to blame French for all that was wrong with the BEF.

We are also told of the semi mutiny of the British Army in Ireland as a result of Home Rule, though French's scamdalous private life and his many flirtings outside of marriage are not touched on.

Definitely a much better and balanced biography than the ridiculous one on Haig by John Terraine. ... Read more

Product Description
Timely, authoritative, application-oriented… an in-depth exploration of current and future uses of FPGAs in digital systems The development of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) may well be the most important breakthrough for the microelectronics industry since the invention of the microprocessor. Using FPGAs, a system designer working on a PC can now develop a working prototype in a few hours and change it at will in just a few minutes, rather than waiting weeks or months for a printed-circuit assembly or a custom integrated circuit to be built. This newfound ability to change a system by simply altering its configuration memory is also leading to exciting new forms of computing, such as array applications that exploit parallelism. Now in a book that functions equally well as a working professional reference and a pedagogically consistent computer engineering text, John V. Oldfield and Richard C. Dorf:

  • Provide a detailed overview of FPGAs in digital systems design
  • Explain the underlying principles, strengths, and limitations of most FPGA architectures
  • Supply many real-life case studies, from elementary to advanced applications—including examples of "custom computing machines"
  • Review cutting-edge developments, including new architectures and a new field-programmable interconnect chip
  • Discuss key economic and business aspects of FPGA manufacture and applications and their role in intellectual property protection
  • Demonstrate ways in which FPGAs offer plausible solutions to some of the major computing problems of our day

Product Description
In 1998, on the lookout for adventure and willing to take a risk, John Burnett left the comforts of the mainstream and became a UN relief worker in Somalia. He was completely unprepared for the realities of working in a country without government or law, where the only authority comes from a loaded gun. Held at gunpoint by a child soldier, having to watching a baby die of malaria in his arms, the experience profoundly changed the way he saw the world. ... Read more

Product Description

Oceans 2020 presents a comprehensive assessment of the most important science and societal issues that are likely to arise in marine science and ocean management in the next twenty years. Sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), and the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), the book brings together the world's leading ocean scientists and researchers to analyze the state of marine science and technology, identify key scientific issues for sustainable development, and evaluate the capability of scientists, governments, and private-sector stakeholders to respond to those issues. Topics include:

  • basic ocean sciences
  • pressures on the coastal zone
  • climate change and the ocean
  • fisheries and fishery science in their search for sustainability
  • offshore industries including oil drilling, carbon sequestration, and manganese nodule mining
  • marine information for shipping and defense
Also included are chapters on cross-cutting issues including operational oceanography, ocean instrumentation and technology, developing frameworks for cooperation, and capacity building in developing nations. In addition, the book offers an introductory overview and a "Vision to 2020" that outlines a path to rational ocean governance. In each chapter, contributors give a brief but comprehensive overview of the subject and then consider what has been achieved in recent years, define the problems, outline solutions, and set forth recommendations on the needs for and directions of ocean science in support of sustainable development for the next twenty years.

Oceans 2020 suggests what can be done about major marine environmental issues through the better development and application of marine science and technology, focusing on the issues that are most closely related to human and sustainable development. It will help guide countries in developing their marine science and technology strategies and priorities and is an essential source of information for policymakers, government officials, resource managers, scientists, the media, and all those concerned with the current and future health of the oceans. ...
