A great free puzzle book
If I were a math teacher or had kids, this book would be worth good money despite its age. There's a collection of a few hundred math problems, involving money, time, families and other situations. They're good brain teasers.

The book doesn't have the greatest formatting for the Kindle. There are a few errors and it lacks a table of contents and proper markup, but it still works well. The only "downside" I have is that some of the math puzzles are a bit difficult when older British money was used, when the problem is compounded by the fact that you had to use shillings and pence were used, and you mention that you have a half crown and threepence in order to buy something. It's a little confusing but there's a table of conversions in the beginning.

Some Kindle deficiencies
I have this paper book, but wanted a copy for my Kindle DX. There are a few versions for the Kindle, but I shelled out a few bucks for the one that said it was optimized for larger readers.

Although it reads well, and there are illustrations, the Table of Contents doesn't work. I mean, it is there (you can see it), but it is non-functional. A bit diappointing, since I'll have to tag the locations for the chapters myself.

I think Amazon should have a bullet list when selling electronic books that tell you things like this.

I'll keep the book anyway, but there was no reason that whoever threw this up there didn't take the time to do it right.

I found this book simply sensational, once it has hundreds of interesting puzzles on math and logic. One learns a lot by reading it.

all around good puzzles
This book is primarily a math andnumbers puzzle book.There is a section called "combinatorial and topological problems", which are more visual logic.For the most part the puzzles are of medium difficulty and easily solved with pencil and paper in about 10 minutes.Once you start working your way through the book the solutions come a little easier as Dudeney'smethods start to become familiar.These are satisfying puzzles, I found only a few that felt like a let down.
This is an excellent brain exercise book for kids starting to tackle algebra.

Requires Pencil and Paper
This book of puzzles consists of problems that are mathematical or geometric in nature.A good percentage of the puzzles are clever and ingenius, and there are a lot of puzzles.These tend to be quite a bit harder than puzzles and problems in other books of this type, though, and don't lend themselves to a casual environment.You may have to sit at a desk with pencil and paper to solve most of these.

In spite of the many clever problems, there are also many obnoxious ones, too.In some cases, a problem will be explained with an illustration to demonstrate the idea but the solution will conflict with the diagram.In other cases, the "solution" will involve severe liberties with the puzzle rules.For instance: make six boxes with 12 matches... in the solution, the "sixth box" is the teeny square formed by the butt-ends of four matchsticks when arranged in a plus-shape.

I don't have much time to spend doing puzzles, even though I enjoy solving them.I have a small stack of books like this in the restroom.While some of the puzzles in this book can be solved in your head, most can not.Many puzzles have 10 or more variables, require algebra or calculus, or sketching, or many result in non-integer answers.There's a fair amount of brute-force math.This book has therefore been of limited entertainment to me.

GREAT Fun to read or keep in the bathroom
