Irving was one of Atlantic Canada's foremost entrepreneurs of the 20th century and ranks as one of the world's leading industrialists. Today the Irving group of companies are owned and operated by his three sons, James, Arthur, and Jack, and their respective children. Born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, as a youngster Irving was viewed as a tough kid from a rough sawmill town on the Northumberland Strait. There are many accounts of his rough and tumble attitude in schoolyard fights. He began his entrepreneurial streak early, but this was tempered by the dawn of the First World War. K.C., along with several friends attempted to enlist but his father put an end to it by enrolling him at Acadia University - an association continues b...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=966605 ... Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Nathan Clifford (August 18, 1803 - July 25, 1881) was an American statesman, diplomat and jurist. Clifford was born of old Yankee stock in Rumney, New Hampshire, to farmers, the only son of seven children (His great-great-grandmother, Ann Smith, wife of Israel Clifford, was the accuser of Goody Cole.) He attended the public schools of that town, then the Haverhill Academy in New Hampshire, and finally the New Hampton Literary Institute (now known as the New Hampton School). After teaching school for a time, he studied law in the offices of Josiah Quincy and was admitted to the bar in Maine in 1827, establishing his first practice in Newfield, Maine. He served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1830 to 1834 and served as Speaker of that house the last two years. He was then Maine Attorney General from 1834 until 1838, when he was elected as a Democrat to the 26th and 27th Congresses, serving March 4, 1839 through March 3, 1843, and representing the Second and then the Third District. He was not a candidate for re-election in 1842. In 1846, President James K. Polk appointed him 20th Attorney General of the United States after his predecessor, John Y. Mason, returned to being Naval Secretary. Clifford served in Polk's Cabinet from October 17, 1846, to March 17, 1848. Immediately after completing his service with the Justice Department he became the U.S. Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Mexico, serving from March 18, 1848 to September 6, 1849. It was through Clifford that the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was arranged with Mexico, by which California became a part of the United States. Following his service in the diplomatic corps, Clifford resumed the practice of law in Portland, Maine. Nathan ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Geoffrey William Arnold Dummer, MBE (1945), C.Eng., IEE Premium Award, FIEEE, MIEE, USA Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm (25 February 1909 16 September 2002) was a British electronics author and consultant who is credited as being the first person to conceptualise the integrated circuit, commonly called the microchip, in the late-1940s and early 1950s. Dummer passed the first radar trainers and became a pioneer of reliability engineering at the Telecommunications Research Establishment in Malvern in the 1940s. Born in Hull, Dummer studied electrical engineering at Manchester College of Technology starting in the early 1930s. By the early 1940s he was working at the Telecommunications Research Establishment in Malvern (later to become the Royal Radar Establishment). His work with colleagues at TRE led him to the belief that it would be possible to fabricate multiple circuit elements on and into a substance like silicon. In 1952 he presented his work at a conference in Washington, DC, some six years before Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments was awarded a patent for essentially the same idea. As a result he has been called "The Prophet of the Integrated Circuit" Dummer was admitted to a Nursing home in Malvern in 2000 due to a stroke and died in September 2002, aged 93. G.W.A. Dummer was born in Hull. Yorkshire, England, 25 February 1909, and educated at Sale High School and Manchester College of Technology. His first job was with Mullard Radio Valve Company in 1931 examining defective valves returned by customers to establish the cause of failure, the companys aim being to attribute the cause to rough handling to avoid having t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2106656 ... Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
This collection reveals the history of English common law and Empire law in a vastly changing world of British expansion. Dominating the legal field is the Commentaries of the Law of England by Sir William Blackstone, which first appeared in 1765. Reference works such as almanacs and catalogues continue to educate us by revealing the day-to-day workings of society.

The purport of the letter was quite different from what you supposed it to be.1 In the reign of Charles II., the last Earl of Northumberland died, leaving only one child, a girl, quite an infant, and the title of Northumberland and the name of Percy were both extinct, at least the name would be, as soon as the child married. She was heiress in immediate possession of all his property, consisting of the Duke of Northumberland's property in Northumberland and Middlesex, which I have heard in conversation to be worth £"100,000 a year. She also possessed all my estates in Yorkshire, Cumberland, and Sussex. And it was well known that the King created his son George Earl of Northumberland, for the purpose of procuring his marriage with the immense heiress. And the letter was from the King to her mother, the Dowager Countess of Northumberland to make the proposal, and which I suppose was not accepted, as the marriage did not take place, and the Earl, afterwards Duke of Northumberland, died unmarried. He was younger brother to the Duke of Grafton and Cleveland. Here is a long story for y... ... Read more

LECTURES AND ESSAYS BY THE LATE WILLIAM KINGDON CLIFFORD. CONTENTS: BODY AND MIND ON THE NATURE, OF THINGS IN THEMSELVES ON THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF MORELS RIGHT AND WRONG : THE SCIENTIFIC GROUND OF THEIR DISTINCTION THE ETHICS OF BELIEF THE ETHICS OF RELIGION THE INFLUENCE UPON MORALITY OF A DECLINE IN RELIGIOUS BELIEF COSMIC EMOTION ON THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE8 BODY AND MIND THE subject of this Lecture is one in regard to which a great change has recently taken place in the public mind. Some time ago it was the custom to look with suspicion upon all questions of a metaphysical nature as being questions that could not be discussed with any good result, and which, leading inquirers round and round in the same circle, never came to an end. But quite of late years there Is an indication that a large number of people are waking up to the fact that Science has something to say upon these subjects and the English people have always been very ready to hear what Science can sayunderstanding by Science what we shall now understand by it, that is, organised common sense, When I say Science, I do not mean what some people are pleased to call Philosophy. The word philosopher, which meant originally lover of wisdom, has come in some strange way to mean a man who thinks it his business to explain everything in a certain number of large books.
