Excerpt: At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, Great Britain, an official football tournament was contested for the first time. Eight teams entered (including two from France), although Hungary and Bohemia withdrew before the start. Denmark's Sophus "Krølben" Nielsen set a record by scoring 10 goals in a 17-1 win against France. Great Britain won the gold. Hungary withdrew before the tournament started for financial reasons. Bohemia withdrew before the tournament started after losing their FIFA membership. The French were so shocked by their humiliating 17-1 defeat against Denmark that they declined to play for the bronze medal. After France forfeited, the Netherlands played Sweden for third place. 15 footballers scored over the course of the tournament. Nielsen, with 10 goals in one game and 11 over the full event, set a pair of daunting records. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=714166 ... Read more

Product Description
Motivated by questions about which functions could be represented by Dirichlet series, Harald Bohr founded the theory of almost periodic functions in the 1920s. This beautiful exposition begins with a discussion of periodic functions before addressing the almost periodic case. An appendix discusses almost periodic functions of a complex variable. This is a beautiful exposition of the theory of Almost Periodic Functions written by the creator of that theory; translated by H. Cohn. ... Read more

Excerpt: Thomas Bartholin (Thomas Bartolinus) (20 October 1616 4 December 1680) was a Danish physician, mathematician, and theologian. He is best known for his work in the discovery of the lymphatic system in humans and for his advancements of the theory of refrigeration anesthesia, being the first to describe it scientifically. Thomas Bartholin came from a family that has become famous for its pioneering scientists, twelve of whom became professors at the University of Copenhagen. Three generations of the Bartholin family made significant contributions to anatomical science and medicine in the 17th and 18th centuries: Thomas Bartholin's father, Caspar Bartholin the Elder (1585-1629), his brother Rasmus Bartholin (1625-1698), and his son Caspar Bartholin the Younger (1655 1738). In December 1652, Bartholin published the first full description of the human lymphatic system. Jean Pecquet had previously noted the lymphatic system in animals in 1651, and Pecquet's discovery of the thoracic duct and its entry into the veins made him the first person to describe the correct route of the lymphatic fluid into the blood. Shortly after the publication of Pecquet's and Bartholin's findings, a similar discovery of the human lymphatic system was published by Olof Rudbeck in 1653, al...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=331256 ... Life and career Bohr was born in Copenhagen in 1922, and grew up surrounded by physicists such as Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg , who were working with his father at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (now the Niels Bohr Institute ) at the University of Copenhagen . In 1940, shortly after the German occupation of Denmark, Bohr began his physics degree at the University of Copenhagen. In October 1943, shortly before he was to be arrested by the German police, Niels Bohr escaped to Sweden with his family, later travelling to London and on to work on the Manhattan Project . During this time, Aage Bohr travelled with his father, acting as his assistant and secretary. The Bohrs returned to Denmark in 1945, and Aage returned to University, graduating with a master's degree in 1946, with a thesis concerned with some aspects of atomic stopping problems. Following graduation, he became an associate at the Niels Bohr Institute. Bohr worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in early 1948, and later at Columbia University from January 1949 to August 1950. While in the US, Bohr married Marietta Soffer; the couple had three children, Vilhelm, Tomas and Margrethe. Bohr became a professor at the University of Copenhage... ... Read more

Product Description
From the Preface: ``The purpose of our book is to provide an overall view of all the basic features of almost periodic functions, in the various meanings this term has acquired in modern research as well as the many applications of such functions. This feature of the book should, of course, make it useful to those readers who are interested in the connections that exist between theory (pure!) of almost periodic functions and such areas of application as the theory of ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Several other areas of application are also indicated, together with an abundance of references. The Bibliographical Notes at the end of almost every chapter have been added to in this Second Edition. Completely new is [Chapter II.3], which is devoted to a relatively new class of almost periodic functions: random functions almost periodic in probability. It is certain that these functions will find many applications in the theory of stochastic functional equations.'' ... Read more
