Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Excerpt: Sir Michael Francis Atiyah, OM, FRS, FRSE (born 22 April 1929) is a British mathematician, and one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century. He grew up in Sudan and Egypt, and spent most of his academic life at Oxford, Cambridge, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has been President of the Royal Society (19901995), Master of Trinity College, Cambridge (19901997), Chancellor of the University of Leicester (19952005), and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (20052008). He is currently retired and an honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh. He has had many mathematical collaborations, in particular with Raoul Bott, Friedrich Hirzebruch and Isadore Singer, and his students include Graeme Segal, Nigel Hitchin and Simon Donaldson. With Hirzebruch he founded topological K-theory, a major tool in algebraic topology, that describes the ways in which high dimensional space can be twisted. His best known result is the AtiyahSinger index theorem, proved with Singer in 1963, a fundamental and widely used result which can be used to co...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20698 ... Read more

In the first verse he called them III- brethren ; he suffered what they suffered ; he sympathized ; if they were in danger, he was so too; he and they were one. And what was the danger? It was no trivial, common danger, at a distance threatened by some foreign enemy advancing; the danger was at home, the enemy was lodged within the works, the very sentinel-thought, which was entrusted with orders to discover the approaches of the enemy, that, that was the very enemy. Self, this perfidious self, is the betrayer and confederate even against self. O false heart, as little to be trusted as the winds, or seas; a deep but ever troublesome, a very labyrinth all entrenchedSERM. with mazes, where a worse monster than a Minotaur, m- Perfidiousness sits enthroned. We hoped that thought was given us to spin some thread to lead us hence, but we were mistaken, night confounded our distinguishing faculty. Where is the mind's great 'HyefjioviKov, whose royal prerogatives, flattering Greek philosophy stretched so far as to give it almost arbitrary power ? Since what was reason yesterday is not to-day; certainly, there is some magic, or some juggle in it, and there is something in a man which can, upon occasion, act the part of reason. What can that be ? Fancy, which can paint with fine drapery, but false, and cheat all the passions into entire obedience. For while the mind should chide itself for suffering thoughts to wander, the absence of those thoughts is supplied, we know not how, by changelings which officiously put on the shape and air of thoughts, to make the mind believe that... ... Excerpt: Felsted School -The school became a notable educational centre for Puritan families in the 17th century, numbering a hundred or more pupils, under Martin Holbeach, Headmaster from 16271649, and his successors (see below). John Wallis and Isaac Barrow were educated at Felsted in this period, as were four of Oliver Cromwell's sons. Another era of prosperity set in under the headmastership of William Trivett between 1778 and 1794; but under his successors numbers dwindled. As the result of the discovery by Thomas Surridge (headmaster 18351850), from research among the records, that a larger income was really due to the foundation, a reorganization took place by Act of Parliament, and in 1851,under the headmastership of the Rev. Excerpt: Sir Isaac Newton FRS (4 January 1643 31 March 1727 ) was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian who is considered by many scholars and members of the general public to be one of the most influential people in human history. His 1687 publication of the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (usually called the Principia) is considered to be among the most influential books in the history of science, laying the groundwork for most of classical mechanics. In this work, Newton described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion which dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton showed that the motions of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural laws by demonstrating the consistency between Kepler's laws of planetary motion and his theory of gravitation, thus removing the last doubts about heliocentrism and advancing the scientific revolution. Newton also built the first practical reflecting telescope and developed a theory of colour based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into the many colours that form the visible spectrum. He also formulated an empirical law of cooling and studied the speed of sound. In mathematics, Newton shares the credit with Gottfried Leibniz for the development of the differential and integral calculus. He also demonstrated the...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14627 ...
