Product Description
The Conics of Apollonius (3rd Century BCE) is the culmination of the brilliant geometrical tradition of ancient Greece. With astonishing virtuosity, and with a storyteller's flair for thematic development, Apollonius leads the reader through the mysteries of these intriguing curved lines, treated as objects of pure mathematics. His work in turn provided a basis for the very differently conceived investigations of modern mathematicians and scientists such as Viète, Descartes, Kepler, and Newton. Reading the Conics is an unparalleled adventure into the highest reaches of human intellectual achievement. This is a completely new edition of Taliaferro's translation of the first three books of Apollonius's Conics, with all new diagrams. It is the only English translation of these books other than Heath's out-of-print version which is a modernized retelling rather than a true translation. Conics Books I--III were formerly included in Volume 11 of the Encyclopædia Britannica's Great Books of the Western World, but the work is no longer included in that series and has been out of print. We made many corrections to the old edition's text, translation, and notes. The book features all new diagrams, an index, a bibliography, and an introductory essay by Harvey Flaumenhaft. Design and layout make it easy to read and work with, with diagrams repeated on every spread, adequate space for notes, and high quality paper to prevent show-through. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume takes a look at one of the greatest works of Hellenistic mathematics, Apollonius of Perga's "Conica". It provides an alternative to H.G. Zeuthen's "Die Lehre von den Kegelschnitten im Altertum". The central part of the volume contains a historically sensitive analysis and interpretation of the entire "Conica", both from the standpoint of its individual books and of the text as a whole. Particular attention is given to Books V-VII. Two chapters in the volume concern histioriographic issues connected with the "Conica" in paricular and Greek mathematics in general. ... Read more

Product Description
Reprint of the 1896 edition. Cloth. Oversized Octavo. clxx, 254 p. Very little is known about the life of Apollonius, the last great mathematician of antiquity. He was born at Perga in Pamphylia, southern Asia Minor, during the reign [247-222 b.c.] of Ptolemy Euergetes, King of Egypt. When he was quite young, Apllonius went to study at the school in Alexandria established by Euclid. Apollnius's fame in antiquity was based on his work on conics. His treatise on this subject consisted of eight books, of which seven have survived. Like most of the well-known Greek mathematicians, Apollonius was also a talented astronomer. The Conics was written book by book over a long period of time. The general preface to the work is given n Book 1. The first four books are an elementary introduction. These books are thus an extension of the earlier conics by other mathematicians such as Euclid. Since most of these results were already well known, one might expect Apollonius's presentation to be more concise and to attempt a greater logic and generality. Beginning with Book V, more advanced topics are taken up. Book V is perhaps the best of the latter four. Heath's work is the standard English translation of Apollonius's principal work, and contains modern mathematical notation. ... Read more

Product Description
A companion volume to our edition of Conics Books I-IIIThe Green Lion announces a first English translation of Book IV of Conics, translated and annotated by Michael N. Fried, as a companion volume to our edition of Conics Books I-III. Conics IV deals with the way pairs of conic sections can intersect or touch each other. In his Introduction to the translation, Fried shows that this book has been misappraised by scholars too much inclined to see Apollonius's work merely as a precursor to the analytic geometry of the seventeenth century. He writes, "Playfulness is one of the real delights of Book IV. One can see in this playfulness the artful way Apollonius contends with the main challenge of the book---the problem of how the opposite sections, specifically, meet other sections of a cone and other opposite sections--- how he gives this problem both foundation and context." ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Apollonius of Perga [Pergaeus] (Ancient Greek:)(ca. 262 BC-ca. 190 BC) was a Greek geometer and astronomer noted for his writings on conic sections. His innovative methodology and terminology, especially in the field of conics, influenced many later scholars including Ptolemy, Francesco Maurolico, Isaac Newton, and René Descartes. It was Apollonius who gave the ellipse, the parabola, and the hyperbola the names by which we know them. The hypothesis of eccentric orbits, or equivalently, deferent and epicycles, to explain the apparent motion of the planets and the varying speed of the Moon, are also attributed to him. Apollonius' theorem demonstrates that the two models are equivalent given the right parameters. Ptolemy describes this theorem in the Almagest XII.1. Apollonius also researched the lunar theory, for which he is said to have been called Epsilon . The crater Apollonius on the Moon is named in his honor. ... Read more

Excerpt: Zeno of Citium (Greek: , Znn ho Kities; 334 BC - 262 BC) was a Greek philosopher from Citium (Greek: ), Cyprus. Zeno was the founder of the Stoic school of philosophy, which he taught in Athens from about 300 BC. Based on the moral ideas of the Cynics, Stoicism laid great emphasis on goodness and peace of mind gained from living a life of virtue in accordance with nature. It proved very successful, and flourished as the dominant philosophy from the Hellenistic period through to the Roman era. Zeno was born c. 334 BC, in Citium in Cyprus. Most of the details we know about his life come from the anecdotes preserved by Diogenes Laërtius in his Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers. Zeno was the son of a Phoenician merchant and was a merchant himself, when he came to Athens to learn philosophy, at the age of 22. The story goes that, after a shipwreck, Zeno wandered into a bookshop in Athens and was attracted to some writings about Socrates. He asked the librarian how to find such a man. In response, the librarian pointed to Crates of Thebes, the most famous Cynic living at that time in Greece. Zeno is described as a haggard, tanned person, living a spare, ascetic life. This coincides with the influences of Cynic teaching, and was, at least in part, continued in his Stoic philosophy. In one incident during his tutelage with Crates, he was made to carry a pot of lentil soup around the city. After Zeno began carrying the pot, Crates smashed it with his staff, splattering the lentil soup all over his surprised student. When Zeno began to run off in embarrassment, Crates chided, "Why run away, my little Phoenician? Not...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=37142 ... Read more
