Product Description
Mathematician, philosopher, prolific author, translator and astrologer, Adelard of Bath still found time to tutor the future Henry II, to assist the Exchequer and to compose treatises on subjects ranging from the care of falcons to the uses of the astrolabe. Born in 1080 into a bishop's extended family, Adelard took full advantage of the exceptional opportunities such a background had to offer, studying at Tours and Laon and travelling to Syria and Greece. His translation from the Arabic of Euclid's "Elements", and his introduction into the West of astronomic tables, Hindu-Arabic numerals, and the use of zero, made him a key contributor to the conceptual revolution which initiated iniated modern scientific methods. This general study of Adelard's work discusses his numerous manuscripts and their influence on contemporary thought, as well as presenting information about his life. ... Read more

Product Description
Abu Mabwar (787-886, in Western Europe known as Albumasar)was the best known astrologer of the Middle Ages in both the Islamic world andthe Christian West. His master-work was the Great Introduction toastrology, which was copied into numerous Arabic manuscripts, translated twiceinto Latin, and printed in the Renaissance. However, he himself made anabbreviation of this work, which summarised the astrological information inthe larger work in a convenient way. This abbreviation survives in two Arabicmanuscripts and a Latin translation made by Adelard of Bath in the earlytwelfth century. The Abbreviation of the Introduction to Astrology contains the firstedition of the Abbreviation and the Latin translation, with Englishtranslations of both texts and several indexes. As well as being of interestto cultural historians it should serve as a useful introduction to medievalastrology. ... Read more

Adelard de Bada (Latin : Adelardus Bathensis ) (c. 1080 c. 1152) was a 12th century English scholar. He is known both for his original works and for translating many important Arabic scientific works of astrology , astronomy , philosophy and mathematics into Latin, as well as some ancient Greek texts in Arabic translation, which were then introduced to Western Europe. He studied at Tours , taught for a time at Laon , then travelled to Southern Italy, Syracuse in Sicily , and Antioch in Asia Minor . He had settled in Bath in England by 1122. Excerpt: Ab 'l-Wald Muammad ibn Amad ibn Rushd (Arabic: ), better known just as Ibn Rushd (Arabic: ), and in European literature as Averroes (pronounced ) (1126 December 10, 1198), was an Andalusian Muslim polymath; a master of Islamic philosophy, Islamic theology, Maliki law and jurisprudence, logic, psychology, politics, Arabic music theory, and the sciences of medicine, astronomy, geography, mathematics, physics and celestial mechanics. He was born in Córdoba, Al Andalus, modern-day Spain, and died in Marrakesh, modern-day Morocco. His school of philosophy is known as Averroism. He has been described by some as the founding father of secular thought in Western Europe and "one of the spiritual fathers of Europe," although other scholars oppose such claims. His name is also seen as Averroës, Averroès or Averrhoës, indicating that the "o" and the "e" form separate syllables. Averroes is a Latinate distortion of the actual Arab name Ibn Rushd. According to Ernest Renan, he was also called as Ibin-Ros-din, Filius Rosadis, Ibn-Rusid, Ben-Raxid, Ibn-Ruschod, Den-Resched, Aben-Rassad, Aben-Rois, Aben-Rasd, Aben- Rust, Avenrosdy Avenryz, Adveroys, Benroist, Avenroyth, Averroysta, etc. "Averroès et l'Averroïsme : essai historique" Ibn Rushd came from a family o...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=47836 ... Chapters: Fibonacci, Alcuin, Adelard of Bath, Thomas Bradwardine, Abraham Bar Hiyya, Jordanus de Nemore, Abacus School, Nicole Oresme, Paolo Dagomari Di Prato, Witelo, Oxford Calculators, Hermann of Reichenau, Plato Tiburtinus. Excerpt:Abacus or abaco refers to calculations, especially the subject of direct calculations, using Hindu numerals without the help of the abacus (an instrument for calculating) . Abacus school is a term applied to any Italian school or tutorial after the 13th century, whose commerce-directed curriculum placed special emphasis on mathematics, such as algebra , among other subjects . These schools sprang after the publication of Fibonacci s Book of the Abacus and his introduction of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system . In Fibonacci s viewpoint, this system, originating in India around 400 B.C.E. and later adopted by the Arabs, was simpler and more practical than using the existing Roman numeric tradition. Italian merchants and traders quickly adopted the structure as a means of producing accountants, clerks, and so on, and subsequently abacus schools for students were established . These were done in many ways: communes could appeal to patrons to support the institution and find masters; religious institutions could finance and oversee the curriculum ; independent masters could teach pupils. Unless they were selected for teaching occupations that were salaried, most masters taught students who could pay as this was their main source of income . Significance Abacus schools were significant for a couple of reasons: Firstly, because mathematics was associated with many professions, including trade , there was an increasing need to do away with the old Roman numeral system which produced too many errors . The number of Roman characters a merchant needed to memorize to c... ... Read more

Excerpt: Fernando or Fernán Pérez de Traba (c.1090-c.1155), also Fernão Peres de Trava in Galician-Portuguese, was a nobleman and count of the Kingdom of León who for a time held power over all Galicia. He became the lover of Countess Teresa of Portugal, through whom he attained great influence in that realm, and was de facto ruler of Portugal between 1121 and 1128. The Poema de Almería, a Latin poem celebrating one of Alfonso VII's major victories of the Reconquista, extols Fernán: The valiant (strenuus) Count Fernando Pérez follows this armed troop administering the Galician laws with royal care. His position had been strengthened by his tutoring of the Emperor's son. If one were to see him, one would judge him already a king. He is famed for his royal nobility, and because he bears a count's lineage. Fernán was the second son of Pedro Fróilaz de Traba, founder of the House of Traba, and his first wife, Urraca Fróilaz. His family was the most powerful in Galicia at the time, and he himself held properties in the most important Galician cities: Lugo and Santiago de Compostela. Fernán's first appearance in the surviving documentation dates from September 1107, just after the death of Raymond of Galicia, when his father confirmed a privilege of Alfonso VI for the monastery of Caaveiro, along with his sons. Excerpt: David I or Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim (Modern: Daibhidh I mac Chaluim; 1083 x 1085 - 24 May 1153) was a 12th-century ruler who was Prince of the Cumbrians (1113-1124) and later King of the Scots (1124-1153). The youngest son of Máel Coluim III and Margaret, David spent most of his childhood in Scotland, but was exiled to England temporarily in 1093. Perhaps after 1100, he became a dependent at the court of King Henry I. There he was influenced by the Norman and Anglo-French culture of the court. When David's brother Alexander I of Scotland died in 1124, David chose, with the backing of Henry I, to take the Kingdom of Scotland (Alba) for himself. He was forced to engage in warfare against his rival and nephew, Máel Coluim mac Alaxandair. Subduing the latter seems to have taken David ten years, a struggle that involved the destruction of Óengus, Mormaer of Moray. David's victory allowed expansion of control over more distant regions theoretically part of his Kingdom. After the death of his former patron Henry I, David supported the claims of Henry's daughter and his own niece, the former Empress-consort, Matilda, to the throne of England. In the process, he came ...http://booksllc.net/?id=147976 ... Read more

Excerpt:Pope Innocent III (1160 or 1161 16 July 1216) was Pope from 8 January 1198 until his death. His birth name was Lotario dei Conti di Segni, sometimes anglicised to Lothar of Segni. Lotario de' Conti was born in Gavignano, near Anagni. His father was Count Trasimund of Segni and was a member of a famous house, Conti, which produced nine Popes, including Pope Gregory IX (12271241), Pope Alexander IV (12541261) and Pope Innocent XIII (17211724). Although Lotario is commonly identified as the nephew of Pope Clement III (11871191), that error arises from the similarity between Clement's family name, Scolari, with that of Scotti, the noble Roman family of Lotario's mother, Clarice. Lotario studied in Rome, where he received his early education, Paris, where he studied theology, and Bologna, where he studied jurisprudence. In any case, as Pope, Lotario was to play a major role in the shapi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24455 ... Read more

Excerpt: Omar Khayyám (Persian: ), (born 18 May 1048 AD, Neyshapur, Iran1131 AD, Neyshapur, Iran), was a Persian polymath, mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, physician, and poet. He wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, and music. He became established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. Recognized as the author of the most important treatise on algebra before modern times as reflected in his Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra giving a geometric method for solving cubic equations by intersecting a hyperbola with a circle. He contributed to the calendar reform and may have proposed a heliocentric theory well before Copernicus. His significance as a philosopher and teacher, and his few remaining philosophical works, have not received the same attention as his scientific and poetic writings. Zamakhshari referred to him as the philosopher of the world. Many sources have testified that he taught for decades the philosophy of Ibn Sina in Nishapur where Khayyám lived most of his life, died, and was buried and where his mausoleum remains today a masterpiece of Iranian architecture visited by many people every year. Outside Iran and Persian speaking countries, Khayyám has had impact on literature and societies through translation and works of scholars. The greatest such impact among several others was in English-speaking countries; the English scholar Thomas Hyde (16361703) was the first non-Persian to study him. Excerpt: Omar Khayyám (Persian: ), (born 18 May 1048 AD, Neyshapur, Persia (Iran)1131 AD, Neyshapur, Persia), was a Persian Muslim polymath, mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, physician, and poet. He also wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, and music. He became established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. The greatest such impact among several others was in English-speaking countries; the English scholar Thomas Hyde (16361703) was the first non-Persian to study him. However the most influential of all...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=92550 ... Read more
