    Extractions: Apesar disto, não deixou de estudar matemática por si próprio, lendo "Méchanique céleste" de Laplace e depois o trabalho de Jacobi sobre funções elípticas. No seu sétimo semestre, Weierstrass decidiu tornar-se matemático, no entanto, o seu curso era de finanças públicas e adimnistração. Após a sua decisão, passou mais um semestre na Universidade de Bona, o seu oitavo semestre acabou em 1838, e como não conseguia estudar as disciplinas que lhe eram destinadas, simplesmente deixou a faculdade sem fazer os exames de avaliação, o que deixou seu pai completamente destroçado. O pai de Weierstrass foi persuadido por um amigo da família a deixar o seu filho ir estudar para a Academia Teleológica e Filosófica de Münster, de modo a tornar-se professor do ensino secundário. Não é surpreendente que quando Weierstrass publicou um artigo sobre funções abelianas num prospecto da escola de Braunsberg este tenha passado despercebido pela comunidade de matemáticos. No entanto, em 1854, ele publicou "Zur Theorie der Abelschen Functionen" no Jornal de Crelle, o que foi, certamente, noticiado, impulsionando Weierstrass da obscuridão para a claridade.

    Extractions: Debido á gran mobilidade laboral do seu pai en distintos postos da administración e da industria, Weierstrass trasladouse moitas veces de cidade durante a súa infancia. Xa na súa época como estudiante de Bacharelato destacou en matemáticas, aínda que por expreso desexo do seu pai entra na Universidade de Bonn no ano 1834 para estudiar finanzas. O conflicto persoal que isto creou en Karl Weierstrass (quen sentía a súa vocación polo estudio das matemáticas) provocoulle uns pésimos resultados académicos, abandonando a universidade no ano 1838 e pasando a estudiar na Academia de Münster co obxecto de prepararse para os exames de profesor de ensino secundario. Entre os anos 1841 e 1856 Weierstrass dedícase ó traballo de profesor de ensino medio, utilizando todo o tempo libre para as súas investigacións matemáticas, sen acceso a bibliotecas especializadas, nin intercambio científico ou discusións con outros colegas. Semella que a fatiga provocada por esta situación, así como o conflicto persoal da súa época como universitario o levaron a diversos ataques de vertixe moi agudos. A partir da publicación, no ano 1854, do seu artigo "Zur Theorie der Abelschen Functionen", comezou o recoñecemento internacional dos traballos de Weierstrass. Nese mesmo ano obtivo o Doutoramento Honorario da Universidade de Königsberg e dous anos máis tarde tomou posesión como profesor da Universidade Politécnica de Berlín.
