Extractions: 90 Years of the Reproducing Kernel Property: History Meets Contemporary Research At the beginning of the 20th century two important papers appeared in Mathematics and the reproducing kernel property wa s born in Kraków. Its father was Stanis³aw Zaremba , professor at the Jagiellonian University. Stanis³aw Zaremba (1863-1942) graduated as an engineer in St. Petersburg and went on to study mathematics in Paris, receiving there his Ph.D. His thesis Sur un probleme concernant létat calorifique dun corps homogene indefini offered a solution to a problem posed by the Paris Academy of Sciences. Among Zarembas pupils was Tadeusz Wa¿ewski (1896-1972), Zarembas successor, who created the Kraków School of Dif ferential Equations , as called by specialists in the field. Zarembas education determined his scientific interest: widely understood mathematical analysis (traditionally the strength of Cracovian Mathematics) including the theory of partial differential equations, especially those of mathematical physics as well as distinctive applications, in particular in physics. In this context the 1907 paper, still within the theory of partial differential equations, states for the first time what is nowadays called the reproducing kernel property ; the other paper, the 1909 one, is rather orientated towards numerical applications

Extractions: A team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR = Max-Planck-Institute für Demografische Forschung) reports that people born in the autumn live longer than those born in the spring and are less likely to fall chronically ill when they are older. Using census data for more than one million people in Austria, Denmark and Australia, they found that the month of birth is related to life expectancy over the age of 50. In Austria, adults born in autumn (October-December) lived about seven months longer than those born in spring (April-June), and in Denmark adults with birthdays in autumn outlived those born in spring by about four months. Adults born in the Australian autumn lived about four months longer than those born in the Australian spring. The study focused on people born at the beginning of the 20th century, using death certificates and census data. Although nutrition at all times of the year has improved since then, the seasonal pattern persists. A separate study analyzes the birth weight of about 3000 twins born in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s and found that those born in spring and summer weighed less than those born in autumn.

Extractions: Parliamentary elections in one sector of Indian-occupied Kashmir (Jammu-Kashmir state). Heading the call from moderate independentists for voting abstention and a general strike, and fearful of violence from the extremists, almost no one votes in Srinagar (11% of voters) and the other Moslem-majority areas. The dates of the elections in the other three sectors are 16 September, 01 October, 08 October. Roy Britten Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences a study according to which there is a 5% difference between human and chimpanzee genes, rather than the 1.5% believed until now. Britten based this on a computer program that compared 780'000 of the 3 billion base pairs in the human DNA with those of the chimp. The study does not resolve the question of which species is superior, or even whether such a question is meaningful.
